Naomi Klein on Her New Book "Doppelganger" & How Conspiracy Culture Benefits Ruling Elite

We spend the hour with acclaimed journalist and author Naomi Klein, whose new book Doppelganger out this week explores what she calls "the mirror world," a growing right-wing alternate universe of misinformation and conspiracies that, while identifying real problems, opportunistically exploits them to advance a hateful and divisive agenda. Klein explains her initial motivation for the book was her own alter-ego, the author Naomi Wolf, for whom she has often been mistaken. Both Naomis entered public consciousness in the 1990s with books critiquing corporate influence, but in recent years Wolf has become one of the most prominent vaccine deniers and purveyors of COVID-19 misinformation - making the ongoing confusion about their identities a source of frustration. "It's very destabilizing," says Klein, who still urges people to seriously engage with the dangerous ideas propagated in mirror worlds, rather than simply look away. "It's so hard to look at the reality that we are in right now, with the overlay of endless wars and climate disasters and massive inequality. And so whether we're making up fantastical conspiracy theories or getting lost in our own reflections, it's all about not looking at that reality that is only bearable if we get outside our own heads and collectively organize."

We didn't take the changes far enough. We needed, and still need, a socialist revolution. We needed to be better educated, and better salespeople of such ideas. Of course, we were up against corporate media that encouraged people to close their minds. I think Einstein's "Why Socialism", (8 pgs.) is a good way to cut through the commiephobia. I think too, it would help if the Stalinist groups could admit that things did go wrong in the Soviet Union, overreactions to the crises caused by the 14 capitalist nations' "White Armies" invasion, a history chapter most Americans don't know about. (Not everyone on the left is Stalinist; there are Trotskyists, Anarchists, Social Democrats...)

We are not helpless against the oligarchs. The evidence that privatization fails is mounting. The trouble is that we are weakened by the media environment, and easily distracted from reality by whatever crisis is whipped up for our consumption. We have internalized this mindset to where we catastrophize with even the slightest stimulus. But we can recognize the patterns at work and put a stop to them. Unity in resistance, and a shared focus on goals, are a couple of the things we need to turn it around. People have the power.

For those of us who function as scapegoats in dysfunctional and narcissistic family systems, the experience of being treated as someone other than who you are is an experience we understand deeply. To step out of our assigned family role is to become more ourselves, and yet, within our family structure, doing this is viewed as a betrayal of who we used to be and of the whole family system. Our society has many larger dysfunctional groups that function the same way, with scapegoating to distort and distract from the real issues. I look forward to reading this book. Thank you!

Basically people are getting the story/information confused. People even get this Naomi confused with another Naomi (Wolf) who has gone from a progressive to a far right media figure with a large following and platformed next to Steve Bannon. This extreme right, she is kindly arguing, is partly because of the use of the propaganda techniques used by this far right faction that uses bits of truth from discarded issues of the "left" to point to and champion, which inevitably chases more progressive people over to either far right or other Libertarian variations of that end of the spectrum The other part is that the left has shut down, bullied or plain old canceled right wing personalities and the elitism has also aided in the narrative pushed by the right who is gaining monstrous power in populace. someone let me know if I missed something

The issues we face are complicated and not easily resolved in large part because the incentive structures of our society drive the underlying problems and entrenched systems are often difficult to change. Humans are prone to focusing on the evidence which supports our existing beliefs and ignoring that which challenges our own views, this is something that can be corrected for and addressed but it requires constant vigilance.

Q-Anon is a conspiracy theory. "The government and media may not be telling the truth because they are heavily influenced by corporate money" is not a conspiracy theory, it is a reasonable statement that Naomi Klein's younger self would have agreed with. The fact that some right-wing people are saying it too does not make it wrong. And yet that's the whole argument here: Wolf talks to right-wing people so she must be wrong. Not exactly top-notch critical thinking. Fwiw I used to love both Naomis and have read most of their books. Never had trouble telling them apart. But one Naomi abandoned her values in exchange for career success, and it's not Wolf.

Welcome to modern broadcasting. The idea of 'right of reply' is now regarded as outdated and burdensome. Tbh, it would be a massive pain in the arse to get the Naomi's together and could easily descend into a shouting match (often happens when when two protagonists are put together) resulting in zero discussion about ideas and ends up about egos. This format provides more opportunities for analysis, challenging questions and nuance. Even public broadcasters working under a charter of 'balance' (none claim to be 'unbiased') can argue that having an alternative view from Klein's at a later time or date, is evidence that the broadcaster is presenting balanced opinions in the long run.

As things get progressively more weird and confused from things such as Artificial Intelligence, and more sophisticated forms of lying, we need every source of good old common sense, coupled with as much fact gathering and critical thinking we can get. Most importantly, we also need a willingness to question ourselves, and an ability to somehow transcend our own egotistical 'need' to be right, allow ourselves to make mistakes, and then own up to it, and not let it stop us from 'moving on', and continuing to learn, grow, and become ever more aware of the pit-falls and traps that still await those that foolishly believe they've 'seen it all'. I’m sure if you chose to run you’d have your own list of priorities. Focusing on Kennedy’s uncharacteristic mis speak at that dinner is low hanging fruit. He said there was a theory… he did not say he necessarily believed it… and that comment was taken totally out of context… we didn’t get to hear what came before or what came after and he was not saying the Jews were responsible for the virus… a lot of conflation here. Now as to dopplegangers and mirrors there’s a tricky marketing hook itself. Don’t get caught in your own reflection. Perhaps your doppelgänger will reflect on her doppelgänger then we can really run around in circles, I still prefer to listen to RFK jr who hasn’t yet trashed anyone while on the campaign trail and does speak about issues, from the economy and struggling Americans, to the epidemic of chronic diseases in our children and families to agency capture and the overwhelming power corporations are usurping in our lives and finally to the seemingly never ending cycle of wars our government has engaged in in recent years.

Right, Naomi Klein conveniently didn't reveal what Naomi Wolf has been investigating the past three years and talking about on Steve bannon's show. She brought together hundreds of healthcare workers and scientists to comb through the thousands of pages of Pfizer trial documents, which the public only saw because a court-ordered demanded they be released for peer review. I don't understand why Naomi Klein considers this a fantasy conspiracy in a mirror world. Yes, Naomi Wolf has talked about China somewhat, but her primary work has been around side effects reported in the Pfizer documents. RFKJ has been spreading the word to that none of the increasing number of childhood vaccines have been tested against a placebo, and the newly-added covid vaccine has not gone through long-term trials (since the Pfizer and moderna trials were closed after ten months when the placebo group was given the injection). This is always shocking when people hear this and really get it. Are Amy Goodman and Naomi Klein are "pro-vaxers" meaning they fully support giving pharmaceutical drugs to babies and kids that haven't been tested against placebos, and haven't completed long-term trials???? Reducing the impact of pharmaceutical drugs on the complex biological system of our body to name-calling like anti-vaxxer is immature.

This has been very cathartic for me. Considering that Naomi Wolf was the "go to" women's studies author during my high school and college years, even then I was not convinced that she had a solid philosophy that was necessarily "good" for society. Although I was raised in a very leftist family, I had that "uncanny" feeling that she was using a type of double speak. I think I even took a few hits on my grades back then when I would counter her arguments. Seeing Naomi Klein explain this phenomena was very stabilizing. I prefer to add only verifiable, useful and inclusive data to my own "belief system" and I tend to leave the rhetoric and subjective ideas behind. It's been nearly impossible to do for over a decade for me now. Thank you for giving voice to this weird off putting feeling with such easily comprehended comparisons. Because really, that is the only way to change things and find some kind of good stasis. The atmosphere of society seems to me like a pendulum, and when it is far one way or the other, it's most damaging to the stability of our world. Whenever we are at one side or the other of an extreme sway, I dread the backlash of the opposite direction. Even if the opposite direction is more on the "side" that my own philosophy falls on.

Unfortunately, RFK Jr. doesn't know how to read a scientific journal. That's a problem. Many non-scientists can't.. It's going to be more important for researchers to explain their papers in layman's language. Also, "science" left a vacuum by not being straightforward and "giving all the facts". It left room for rumors and conspiracy (still doing it). It's partially the fault of mainstream news and the public health community for not being completely transparent. RFK Jr. is not talking "the truth" but neither is "the other side" in full. Then it gets down to who's more correct than the other? (FYI, not RFK 😔) -someone in the sciences

Again, I'm not a supporter of RFK Jr, but the way a few words were taken out of context and repeatedly misrepresented, even on DN, is frightening and significant to me. As he explained in several interviews in the days following the release of that short video, he was talking about the need to create international mechanisms to control and limit the development of biological weapons. He cited a reputable peer-reviewed study that showed evidence that the Covid virus seemed to be more dangerous for some ethnic groups than for others. He says he was using that fact as an example that viruses, in theory, could be developed to target specific groups, and therefore, "as President" he would work hard to build international rules to prevent such developments. I've seen him make this point on several videos on KZread. The Democratic Party and the their press continue to ignore the context of his words and repeat the snippet completely out of context. It's a smear that I'm very disappointed to see DN participate in. I guess DN has become just another outlet of the Democratic Party?@@Mock_Turtle_1805

@Arturojazz4 I agree that his remarks at an unofficial setting have been taken a little out of context and used against him. However as a politician he should know this will happen and be more careful when bandying loaded phrases and terms about like "targeted". It's a bit disingenuous to display shock at this. It's all part of the way things go these days. He is a well known anti vaxer and peddler of conspiracy theories. Bill Gates has suffered worse at the hands of conspiracists. It's a shame that both sides stoop to similar tactics but with the psych wars being conducted by the right wing currently and their assault on truth, maybe the good guys need to start getting punches in.

Reactionaries used to be the major Right support! There is a point at which it becomes almost insurmountable to get past our often intellectual differences on the Left and come together in time to really overcome the problem of the Lure of the Lie, which is what I call the conspiracy theory culture (thank you for that perfect name) and the general trends on the Right. As Prof. Chomsky says, if we don't stop capitalism from "doing it's thing", "They're going to kill us all" (referencing the fossil fuel industry and its concomitant use of the right wing agenda). Conspiracy theories are very insidious because they're very good at bringing confused lies into a system that has embers of truth smoldering in them and fanning the flames alight. I loved Disaster Capitalism M Klein, which is the only book of yours I've so far had the opportunity to read. A robust Left. Douse the conspiracy culture.

As a past admirer of Naomi Klein, I was really taken aback by her distortions and omissions of the candidacy of RFK Jr. Her analysis of his views, of his vaccine policies, his goals as he has repeatedly annunciated, and his overall stature is so patently misrepresented, I now have doubts of any future beliefs in what she espouses. In case she has been asleep, there is now evidence that the 'conspiracy' of the mRNA vaccines is true and questionable--. RFK Jr has consistantly stated evidence for his views and has cited documentation for them. Where was Naomi Kleine when Roundup was (and is still) killing us, on a daily basis? Where is Naomi with the corruption of the Democratic Party, the War Machine, the Corruption of BIG BANKING and BIG FOOD!!! These are issues that RFK Jr is resonating with folks that are listening, and his past work as an Environmental Lawyer, gives us some credence that if elected, he would actually do something. In fact, his main strategy, if elected, is to reform the agencies, so they are not captured by Corporations. He is the only candidate that is running on a platform to unite people!! That is why he is getting the support of both parties. Your omissions, distortion and misrepresentations are actually hurting the causes of the Hoi Polloi Naomi!! Is RFK Jr perfect....of course not.....but compare in your minds eye the difference a Kennedy Presidency would have from a Biden or Trump Presidency......and before you do, DO YOUR RESEARCH!! Lastly, I continue to be disappointed by the feeble work of Democracy Now, in their failure, in all their years of programming, to do realistic reporting on the corruption the Democratic Corporate State, as if it were the only egalitarian Party--it is NOT.!!!

Naomi KLEIN makes a very important point. If the "Left" makes it dangerous to exist within its ranks by using bullying and brutal tactics against its own (and for that matter those outside its ranks), then it creates the seeds of its own demise. I am not suggesting that we have to "see the point of view of the Right" or even the point of view of every leftist. I am saying that we have to learn to engage in debate that is actually debate and not bullying and name calling. For instance, calling JK Rowling (with whom I disagree very strongly re/Trans issues) a "Nazi" and suggesting she should be killed or gang raped IS NOT AN ARGUMENT (ie., a series of statements intended to prove a point). It just makes us look like A-holes and drives people to the other side (where BTW, they are likely eventually to run into the same kind of behavior.) Succinctly put, one does not change hearts or minds by starting out calling the other person a moron. Not a basis for further discussion.

I always want to hear both sides of a story before I form an opinion. I find it troubling and sad whether it's "liberals" (such as Democracy Now) or the "conservatives", they both are guilty of only allowing one side of the story to be told on their podcasts, network news shows or in the halls of their universities. Rarely are there any public debates or civil exchanges of divergent ideas anymore. Just one side telling the other side to sit down and shut up while they tell the world "The Real Truth". And those who go along with the "Ruling Class Narrative" are rarely if ever challenged by the mainstream media anymore. Umm I wonder why that is? Alternative voices are rarely allowed to be heard or considered and are unfortunately the reality of our world today. It’s creating a very dangerous cultural and political divide in our country. Where one side is "OK" with dehumanizing and demonizing those who they disagree with. They view them as "The Enemy" and "Dangerous to Democracy" while consider themselves as the "Virtuous Ones" and "Saviors of Our Democracy". The only winners here folks are the modern day Robber Barrons who are financially and politically benefiting from this dangerous divide. They have immense financial resources to back both the Right and the Left. They do this by making large donations through their dubious NGO’s and "philanthropic organizations". Both sides of the political and media spectrum are guilty of taking this money. Both sides are being played off on one another. And instead of uniting and pushing back against the biggest threats to humanity (which are our rapidly declining health, wealth and freedoms), we find ourselves fighting amongst ourselves over mostly our petty differences. If we can’t afford the cost of rent, mortgage, food, gas and other basic essentials all those other lower Maslow’s hierarchy of needs will become meaningless to us. If Democracy Now was truly "The Exception to the Rulers" it would allow its listeners to hear both sides of the critical political and cultural issues of our time. I use to believe it was, but unfortunately it has become just another dividing mouthpiece for the ruling class. Rarely if ever trying to bring us together only dividing and helping to tear this country even further apart. Unfortunately many on both sides the political spectrum are being played by the corporations. I ask Amy Goodman to let Naomi Wolf have her rebuttal and allow her to speak for herself instead of allowing only Naomi Klein to define Naomi Wolf. Below is another post which expresses this also: @bonlevina5621/5 days ago "Truth mixed with fallacy are not exclusive to any one group. In the words of Paul Simon, "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest." Both ends of the political spectrum suffer the sin of assumption. It is a phenomenon. I highly respect Naomi Klein. Shock Doctrine is one of the best books I have read. However, the Left can be as frightening as the Right. During Occupy Wall Street I learned that there are some Christian-haters flying the 'inclusiveness' flag, to be sure! I had the audacity, while enjoying pizza with a group of fellow protestors, to mention, conversationally, that the historical Jesus spoke out for the poor and disenfranchised. It is hard to describe the vitriol that exploded toward me, so I will spare you. I began to back out of my involvement with Occupy. I realized that, in no way, did I want the status quo replaced by a new wave of power-seekers. I can now understand why the politically right fear the far left. I have long understood the opposite. It occurred to me that hate and prejudice is insane no matter under which flag it is flown. I think we need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine. "De-platforming" is another, less scathing, way of saying 'censorship', which is precisely what it is. I love a good argument, which is pretty hard to have when only one point of view allowed to be aired.

Ninety percent of what Naomi Wolf has been talking about the last three years has been the hundreds of healthcare workers and scientists she gathered to comb through the court order release of the thousands of pages of Pfizer trial documents. It's interesting that her primary investigative work the past three years wasn't mentioned by Naomi Klein or Amy Goodman at all. Why not have Naomi Wolf on to report on this, and people can support or refute what she has found and decide for themselves whether she's living in some conspiratorial mirror world?

Nor do I see any evidence in his platform that he has any plans to address the issues he does speak wisely to. And sadly I see plenty that he will work in service to those that created the worst of our problems. Bummer bubble burst. That said, I’m dumbstruck by the sheer volume of misinformation flowing from Naomi’s mouth about him and what he’s said, and with Amy’s in tandem agreement. Verbatim the liberal corporate media narrative that we know beyond a shadow of doubt is false in it’s entirety. Just wow. Incredibly disheartening because the truth is plain for anyone who takes the time to listen. Given that, it’s hard to see how we overcome this.. saturation level propaganda. Hard not to turn away from something so ugly, dystopian and unnerving. And with that, we are truly lost.

I’ve been skeptical - & remain so - of claims that he is anti-vaccination because I have seen an interview on KZread where he explains his views on that and IF he is being truthful in that vid, then he isn’t anti-vax. But I have not closed my mind to the possibility that he is either anti-vax, or that he wants to continue our mad militarism in regard to Israel (or the many other accusations that are being directed toward him.)

There are actual conspiracies and conspiracy hypotheses that are not true because there are other more reasonable explanations. When there are questions about highly suspect events, and sometimes it's a string of highly suspect and related events without satisfying answers, if these events are consequential and lead to a possible conclusion that a threat to a free and civilized society may be near, then dismissing a call for a reasonable explanation by simply calling it a conspiracy theory only helps to support the claim that it is a conspiracy. Since there are plenty of conspiracies that no one questions today because over time, efforts to cover it up are no longer adequate and timely, believing that today no conspiracy theories could be true is not realistic. I think labeling a false conspiracy theory as only the purview of the left or only of the right gives cover to people from one ideology or another that are being deceitful.

I totally agree. I fear tyrants take cover under the term conspiracy theory. Crimes go unpunished because someone somewhere can say what tyrants do is conspiracy theory. People forget that all investigative journalism starts out as a conspiracy theory. The journalist starts with just a small amount of evidence or a hunch, and follows to uncover more and more. Naomi Klein knows about pharma's conspiracy to profiteer off the covid era. She presents this as the reasonable and intelligent type of conspiracy theory. Most of Naomi Wolf's work the past 3 years has been gathering hundreds of healthcare workers and scientists to comb through the court order release of thousands of Pfizer trial documents. Klein didn't mention this, and it's been ninety percent of what Naomi wolf has been talking about the past three years. Naomi Wolf could only spread the word about her work on right-leaning media outlets because no left-leaning outlets, or any media organization receiving pharma money through advertising, would have her on, which means a vast majority of media outlets would not have her on to share the damaging information she reported on. Anyone could support or refute what she found in these Pfizer documents - that would be the fair thing to do. But boiling down all her work into a unreasonable conspiracy theory in some mirror world is dishonest in my view.

It is important to realize that all people have inherent distortions of thought, which act as shortcuts in thinking, called cognitive biases. For example, proportionality bias is the tendency believe that significant events mus have substantial causes, e.g. the assassination of JFK was not just due to the actions of a lone gunman, but arose from a concerted effort of a group of malign actors. Another example is confirmation bias, in which people tend to seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs e.g. “I’m going to research COVID vaccines on my own” where someone finds a study or website that supports whatever preexisting belief they have, when they may not have enough of a scientific background to assess the veracity of that information. The Alex Jones’ and Steve Bannons of the world are well aware of these and many other cognitive biases and leverage them to deceive massive swaths of the population in an effort to manipulate/gaslight them into believing a false narrative that benefits their political party. Education and training in the principles of critical thinking is the only thing that can immunize the population against these malignant influencers and is absolutely necessary in an online world of internet echo chambers, and the “Dark Mirror” world that malign actors are attempting to create.

@@charismahornum-fries691it is, and it's a critical thesis more relevant than ever. Unfortunately, this klugee hook to plunge into realms well beyond her prior greatness and the command she had of the subject matter of No Logo and Shock Doctrine. She's a superficial partisan riding/resting on her (well deserved) laurels as a formerly insightful intellectual. It's a profoundly disappointing and insidious phenomenon. The underlying foundational mindset should be the same critical examination of where authority derives from, and the mental acuity to not play into intellectually arresting concepts like "conspiracy theories" and the tiresome idiocy of linear, binary left right corralling of independent thinking. Cooption is real in every upstart movement, and so is deliberate efforts to undermine legitimate efforts to expand the over on window. So drifters and agent provocateurs both worked to turn the initial tea party ideas into a murky, racist Frankenstein of where it started. Even some of the basic ideas Trump rose to power on, have been de legitimized through this same process. A predetermined bias for the simplistic two sided structure of "discourse" is change suicide, and ensures that in the face of wildly concentrated power structures increasingly acting cohesively to the detriment of "the masses". Her pining for a romantic resurgence of a relevant "leftist" groundswell ignores the shifting and obvious urgency and relevance of the need to curtail state power. Even if one maintains the belief that the state is the best vehicle for addressing the decimating of the Middle class and the rights of individuals, not recognizing that a more nuanced perspective that recognizes the immense monopolistic power of interconnected state and corporate actors is on terrifying display as it explores the limits (if any) of how far this ruling force can go in playing its hand. In short, she's a superficial lightweight way out of her depth here reflexively groping for reestablishing relevance of a political paradigm that no longer reflects anything close to reality. Do upstart voices get some things wrong? Of course. But even using the terms "conspiracy culture" and conspiracy "theories" is ignorant, damaging and makes her a useful idiot to the murky forces that gave birth to the concept in the 60s to divert intelligent dilettantes away from some of the most critical open questions of the last 100 years. It's sad and frustrating that she is choosing this route to attempt to regain relevance. To the extent it works, she has become part of the problem and will placate her followers and reinforce their derangements and blind spots. "It gets very confusing" is certainly true, and this offering will exacerbate that. If it doesn't work, she will deservedly slide further towards irrelevance. I wish it weren't so, as she was once a powerful force for greater understanding of the big picture. But it is so. She is ironically the embodiment of the distractions she laments through her unwillingness to change her thinking and risk her comfortable niche. Oh well.
