"The Last Honest Man": James Risen on How Former Senator Frank Church Exposed CIA, FBI & NSA

Veteran national security reporter James Risen joins us for an in-depth look at his new book, The Last Honest Man, about the work of Senator Frank Church to rein in the FBI, CIA and other agencies after the Vietnam War, Watergate and other fiascos had shaken the public's trust in the U.S. government. Church, a Democrat, chaired a Senate committee that in 1975 began investigating the intelligence community and uncovered numerous abuses, including assassination plots and widespread domestic surveillance. Risen's book also includes new details about Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg's previously unknown role in the work of the committee. "The Church Committee, I think, is probably the most important congressional investigation in modern American history," says Risen, who says it marked a "before and after" in U.S. national security policy and helped to limit abuses by the government in the decades that followed.

While all of this may seem shocking, I was a student protester during the Vietnam War. My boyfriend at the time(1968) was pulled from the lottery and forced to participate in the war. He was deeply opposed to the war, and we parted company as he fled to Canada. For several years afterwards, I kept receiving official letters from the CIA demanding I reveal my friends whereabouts. I had no clue where he was nor would I have disclosed that information if I did. I knew I was being watched, even though I was insignificant.

Btw, the CIA at that time, as declassified documents proves, did not only do a bad bad baaaad job on intelligence but had no problem act as scare mongers to keep their further funding going. But in the end, they just made everything worse, scared people into buying frickin "assemble at gome in your own back yard" bomb shelters and being afraid all the time, meanwhile...they just toppled democracies by funding fascist coups in central/south america, spied on their own citicens and...well, they were just bad people. I'm from Sweden, (have my own experience with intelligence trying to infiltrate and also attempt to disrupt meetings with plants, they were bad plants and they were bad at spying at that time, but at one point, they tried to stamp some groups as terrorist groups, but then 9/11 happened, which kinda showed the whole world how ridiculous this was, so we were spared,) but it doesn't come close to your experiences. Let the Bible do the talking Who was it that said that the nation of Israel would become a nation again? What is the only book or words ever uttered or written down from since before our time that have we as a whole seen come true? Matthew 24:32 “Now learn a parable of the fig tree: When his branch is yet tender and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh. 33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. And what does this parable tell us in its highest level of understanding? That Israel will become a nation again. And that the harvest, (the final season for this wicked world) is even at the door (upon us). Who was it that said these words? Wasn't it God himself? God who came to visit us on the earth in 7BC-33AD. And in a very picturesque and eloquent way of speaking. Through the nation of Israel. A nation that rejected God himself. Just like the historic parable of the wicked Israelites that returned to Jerusalem just to die in the land of Egypt contrary to God's constant forgiveness. Israel today has returned to its land of Israel only to once again deny the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the words of the one thing that all Israel believes in. and that of prophecy come true. Who's words prophesied that the branch would bear leaf again? This time the Messiah has returned as the great potentate. The highest law officer in all creation. The Judge of mankind. And when mankind is judged then the proof of the judge's credentials must be presented. Mine are the very words of the Lord Jesus Christ. That's whose words came true for all the world to see. For all generations before the end. Yes, you and me and our parents and sons and daughters. This is an everlasting judgment no one is without the high court of God. His judgments are right and just, merciful and compassionate. Israel of today is as dead as the Israelites who ran away from God into Egypt. Jeremiah 44:12 And I will take the remnant of Judah who have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine. They shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine; and they shall be an execration and an astonishment, and a curse and a reproach. This Israel has run away from God once again to the new Egypt. It may as well be a new Egypt, as judgment is upon all the nations of the world and upon all people, and creation itself. And are no closer to the sons and daughters of God as they were in 33 AD. Jeremiah 44:12 is a real time walking live breathing historical parable that describes all of the world. God gave us so much time to turn from our wickedness. It's too late. Just like the world over starting with the churches in 1988. It's too late. Who's words are the only words that we as mankind cannot deny over all of our theories. our infactactuation of Luck, our ignorance swayed by coincidence? God scoffs at that. Psalm 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision. That's God's judgment up to mankind. It's too late. The jury (the prophets of the Bible) is in and guilty is the verdict. The Judge God and author of the Bible finds mankind must pay the penalty of death everlasting. And to those who wear white robes with palms in their hands, there is life everlasting. The dye is set and ink and paper of the Book never lie. It's too late for a divorced adultress whom God has no obligation to defend (the nation of Israel and the churches and the nations of the world) as God sees all sinners alike. It's too late for the entire world. The book of Jeremiah was written to all the nations and is alive and as sure today in the day of the harvest as it was in the day of unleavened bread. This goes much deeper and deserves a closer look. The world, every man, woman, and child must now ask the question: Who said Israel would become a worldly (gentile) nation again? ANSWER: Matthew 24:32. Let the Bible do the talking.

The scary thing is, I bet this book barely scratches the surface. Eventually, I'm sure, James Risen hit brick walls--hidden documents, disappearing paper trails, dead informants, officials& politicians who said 'no comment', criminals who disappeared--beyond which he could not probe. US history is so much more than the **known** US history. "The Last Honest Man" sounds incredibly dense & complex, but fascinating.

People like Risen surely see the massive EMBEZZLING SCAM, yet they never expose it. Corrupt Congress has been enabling, participating in, and HIDING the embezzling, while both criminal gangs in power just PRETEND to fight each other. The corrupt embezzling sociopaths in power lie to keep us duped; learn the truth and we can be very effective in fighting the inhumane liars. Vaxes, wars, digital IDs, social credit, and all the entities to control and squash us under the guise of caring about the climate - carbon tracking, ESG, 15-minute cities, etc - are PRIVATIZED, which is the major way they embezzle fiat government money. It is CRUCIAL for us to know the scam the US has done here and in all countries it takes over. The overview/exposé below is just 6 paragraphs, and shows us what is behind the curtain of lies they dupe us with. Information is power, and knowing what the scammers hide from us will mean we can do good OFFENSE and be effective in fighting the corrupt liars, not just keep reacting as the sociopaths continue to escalate their tyranny and oppression, and take everything from us. Here is what the US criminals have done all over the world, since WW2: 1. Take over a country by coup, assassination, lies about government being corrupt or by threat or invasion so they can... 2. Implement their EMBEZZLING scam of "privatization", taking over government services & systems and national assets so the corrupt liars can handle fiat government money & BILL THE GOVERNMENT ANY AMOUNT for running such things; they provide themselves with massive exec salaries and insanely high profits, becoming oligarchs and billionaires. 3. Lie to the public ENDLESSLY to keep us duped. 4. Praise leaders who submit to US corruption & demonize leaders who RESIST or reverse it - like Putin, who reversed the US plundering done under US puppet Yeltsin, like Chavez and Maduro in Venezuela, like Gaddafi wanting things nationalized and government money going to THE PEOPLE, like Morales in Bolivia, like Assad who said NO to a US pipeline through Syria, and so on. We also need to know that the demonization of both Russia and China is part of the multipronged US sabotage of the BRICS coalition since 2006. The greedy sociopathic money ADDICTS hate that those two countries are doing fair deals with other countries and helping them escape US control, corruption, privatization and loansharking. Also, vax co's & digital ID systems to control & subjugate us are "privatized" (as are quarantine camps). The scheme was to get TRILLIONS from many govts FOREVER while arranging to squash us so we could never rise up to stop their corruption, tyranny and inhumanity. They tried many pandemics previously to enrich themselves with government money; this was the most coordinated one - and used the most coercion. More specifics re "privatization" embezzling: Yes, in general a government can issue ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY for anything that is physically possible; the corrupt know this and have used that knowledge to scam the public and embezzle government money. They take over government services, conning the public about "saving money" and being "more efficient", but those are lies. The costs actually become higher because the corrupt liars overbill the govt for everything, billing ANY AMOUNT, providing massive exec salaries and insanely high profits, as already mentioned. And they give us REDUCED services, because their sociopathic greed and money addiction means they take more for themselves and do not supply what they are supposed to supply for us. Basically, the US has built a global corruption cartel, taking over countries (and their media) to EMBEZZLE from their governments. The UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand were coopted and corrupted in the 70s-80s; the massive embezzling that ensued by taking over the many dozens of government services, support systems, assets and resources they had is what gave rise to the billionaire class in the 80s! We need a successful INTERVENTION on the lunatic money addicts in power who lie, destroy and KILL for more "money fixes". They are totally UNFIT TO GOVERN and should face charges of dereliction of duty, violating the Constitution, embezzling federal money, crimes against humanity, violating the Nuremberg code, war crimes and more.

I read a fascinating book some tears ago titled" King Leopold's Ghost," about the conquest of the Congo by the Belgium King. The whole brutal history of the enslavement of the people of Congo by Belgium was hard to read. I wept at the cruelty of the subjugation of a once prosperous nation into one large slave camp. When independence was finally granted, the first Democratically elected leader was Patrice LaMumba. It was President Eisenhower who ordered his assination, in order to install a dictatorial leader who would dance to American interests. Since I had just come of age during this period of history, I am going to find this book. I will recognize many of the key actors. More innocent blood on America's hands. This is not what Drmicracy looks like. If I am not mistaken, Eisenhower played a big part in pulling down The leader if the Phillipines in order to install a corrupt leader who was favorable to American interests. The beat goes on. Watch the Democracy Now interview with he and Glenn Greenwald on whether Trump is a traitor. Risen was out of his depth and sucked in by the hysteria. An interesting conversation nonetheless. I have nothing but great disdain for Trump, but the establishment is something else and the Dems are wolves in sheep's clothing (GOP just wolves). All are willing to lie for gain. James Risen is no radical, and was sucked in by "Hitlerizing" of Trump (I do see parallels, but not enough to warrant the hysteria). I don't care about Trump's reputation, I care about the hypocrites and liars laying the charges who still support empire, Wall Street and embrace people like George W. Bush & Kissinger.

Important to remember that what we keep calling "communism" (and always have) is actually Soviet Totalitarianism (or sometimes its milder Chinese variant, et al) - which had nothing at all to do (aside from name and a perverted, disfigured, tenuous connection - despite briefly earnest beginnings) with Marxian ideals. This misnomer has been deeply driven into Americans' heads - yielding a very convenient bogeyman for the Establishment, which has gotten (and continues to get) fantastic mileage from the Scare word.

Back then California & New Jersey leaned Republican while West Virginia was as solid for the Democrats as any state in the. union. Social conditions & political coalitions are always changing, & 50 years is an eternity in politics. Idaho & Montana once had a much stronger union presence, which may account for much of their past tendency to elect Democrats. Evangelical Christians weren't organized politically & mostly voted Democrat. In 1976 they even saw one of their own - Jimmy Carter - elected president. The right-wing media complex as we know it today didn't yet exist; & the cultural divide between urban & rural America didn't have the political salience that it has today.

There is in place an American Stasi, the Patriot Act opened the door for such an organization. It is modeled after the East German Stasi and there is no problem finding recruits. A democracy would find little use for such, however an authoritarian regime would find it invaluable for containment and control. There is the added effect of the shredding of trust that helps to break down society. It is in place and has been for some time. 24/7 internet and phone.

Fantastic and fascinating new information about what I think was the most relevant period in 20th century America. I cannot help having the feeling that, at this point in history, and I hopethis results in a page turning event happening in America, which shifts away from the methods which were used in the past to spy on people, with the ultimate goal being murder, and that we are slowly, but surely, moving towards a time when we have politicians who are honest in their views and policies, instead of what we have now, which is politicians who say one thing, then go and vote against what they have just said. That era must come to an end.

Mr. Sullivan? He was kind and shook my hand, when I was four. He came by my house, to visit my grandmother. He was killed in a "hunting accident* standing on his deck in Sugar Hill NH on a fall morning later that year. Apparently he was going to tell Congress what he knew .

I don't like this guy's premise that, if there were communists in the civil rights movement JEH's repression would have been justified. He uses the non-presence of communists as some sort of badge of authenticity, I'm curious what his thoughts on the Panthers are.

@@hlnbee The thing I always find funny about them is that even though their existence is publicly acknowledged... most Americans have never heard of them. Which makes them a pretty good place to hide things when Congress starts questioning the better-known intelligence agencies &/or the military. I'm not saying that's happening, simply that it appears logical that it would.

Such a strange twist of fate that John Kerry shows up at about 1:20 when Colby is answering a question about abuses. The twist of fate, the irony is how Kerry and his boss have trampled the first amendment as adjudicated by federal court in Louisiana where the government is now forbidden from being in touch with social media for most purposes they formerly were. Those contacts were judged to be among the WORST violations of the first amendment by our government ever. Ha
