Nankang AR-1 Tires: Don't Use On Heavy Horsepower Car!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I am 0 for 2 with the Nankang AR-1 on my 2020 Shelby GT500 CFTP! I had a problem with one of my tires on the first set I took to the track. I thought it was a fluke or a flaw with that specific tire. I bought a 2nd set and had the same problem, this time much worse and on 2 tires! I have not had this problem with any other track tire I have run on my Mustang. It happened with both sets of my Nankangs. I do not recommend these tires for heavyweight horsepower cars!
Edit: A Nankang rep recommended camber less than -3.0 degrees in the front to help reduce tire issues.

    A Nankang rep reached out and recommended camber no more aggressive than -3.0 for heavy cars to reduce the risk of tire damage.

    Tire failure sounds like its your fault, I just want to add, thats way too low of a pressure for these tires. Nankang recommends cars over 1400kg (3100lb) to run 34 - 42 psi hot. In your case, you should be using high 30s maybe touching 40s and adjust accordingly use a tire pyrometer probe.

    I purchased and drove two sets on my GT350R with good results. They seemed too wear very well and last more days that other tires. I wonder if it's the heat we have had this last year in Texas.

    I had same issue on front tires due to running aggressive camber and most importantly runnig on low pressure no matter on street or track. I used to drop my pressure to low 20s cold and now never under 25, bleed more after they are hot, never happened again. Also, these tires tend to work better with a bit higher pressure like 34 hot insteacd of 30 hot for cars over 3400lbs. Hope that helps

    intresting .. i have no issue with lapping on AR1. Now in general i use R888's on the regular but have used AR1 and RE71R often. mind you i never tried it on my gt500 but i use them regularily on my GTR which is sitting at around 800AWHP. Guess will stay away from these on the 500 thanks for info :)

    Dam, that is crazy, I have never seen that with a track tyre before, it looks like the weight of the car has destroyed the side wall, or it was faulty from Factory, but AR1 seem to be a solid track tyre from experince.

    I'm betting their sidewall design just isn't strong enough to handle curbing on 30-profile tire. That is an extremely low profile tire for track use. I bet a 40-profile tire would be fine.

My guess your inside tire temp was way hotter and you could have had more psi in the tire. If inside Temps were way more you should use less aggressive camber most likely. You can use infrared thermometer and it won't be as accurate as a probe but gives you an idea

    Quite a shock seeing that, but im sure it has nothing to do with the car power, im running ar1 on 3 of my car 1track only car the other 2 is mixed track and highway all three is around 600-750whp and weight is 1100-1500kg max, now on my 3rd or 2nd set of ar1 and i ran -2degree camber maxed so far i havent had any problem like you and i genuinely want to know what have been the cause for the ar1 bubbling like that and sorry for the long comment just want to share my exp cheers😁

    Underinflated tire. The Mustang should be about 33psi, imo you are running too low a pressure causing the tire to warp, the bubbling is happening in the same way drag radials deform when launching as they are made for that.

  • @rugbyguitargod
    @rugbyguitargod3 ай бұрын

    These tires are ran on cars WAY more powerful (and heavier) than your GT500. Pretty obvious its a combination of too low of tire pressure and too much negative camber that absolutely destroyed the inner sidewall from overheating. Nankang calls for at LEAST 34-42 PSI when at operating temps for cars over 3100 lbs and no more than -3.0 degrees of negative camber. Pro tip: if you have to put fans on your rotors in the pits, you need to do more cooldown laps before bringing the car back in to allow for tire and brake temps to return to nominal. That's heavy track car life.

    @@carlcarlington600 -3.4 front -2.0 rear. You cannot get that much camber off the stock plates. I have camber bolts too as well as 3/4” front wheel spacers with longer studs. I previously ran 315s in the front prior to going more than stock plates in camber (without spacers). It worked just fine. Excessive camber like I have will require spacers and studs. I have a video on my channel about it.

    @@neilmartin110 These tires heat up much more than others I have tried. My hot pressures were going to high. A Nankang rep told me to go out at 22 psi cold. I did not. That is way too low for a heavyweight car. I go out at 26 cold, wait until 30 shows on the dash before touching anything and then target a max hot of 36. I do similar numbers on other tires other than I can go out a little higher cold and still use 36 max hot. This strategy has worked on all my track tires except the AR-1s.

    Pressure to low

  • @NerdburgChannel
    @NerdburgChannel9 ай бұрын

    Why are your starting your pressures so low, you never bring a tyre up to pressure, you bring it down. you should always start on the recommended pressure and bring it down as the tyre heats up. I have genuinely never heard of anyone doing it the other way around. I would suggest whatever person you spoke to there was some kind of communication failure or misunderstanding. the minimum pressure you should be running these with your car is 34-326PSI. I have run these on a multitude of cars over the years with various weights and power at the Nordschleife and never had an issue.

    we always set a "cold temp pressere" before races etc. you cant stop and reduce them after they get hot. you run them a bit high on test etc. measure hot then adjust and later note down the cold pressure and make that for all the tires you use for the day. i rely messed this up last weekend tho as i had some problems and time issues AND more were then expected so i must have lost 6-10 minuet's on tire f*** up lol. stil that was not the biggest problems i had and i sort of made it in 3 to last after 6 hours lol
