Stephen 'Stef' Carpenter was on hand at Orange's NAMM booth for signings, so we grabbed seven minutes with the Deftones guitarist to talk tone, Orange and what we can expect from the band's new album, Gore.

Man, I respect Stephen so much. I don't think I've heard him say anything negative about anything. He's always smooth, focused, honest and even admits he isn't the best guitar player. But we love him non the least. Wish I had his guitar setup.

Nowadays nobody dares to say anything negative because they are too scared of the snowflakes. Back in the days artists had more balls, no pc bs.
So happy to see Stef more happy and alive in an interview! Gives me hope for more Deftones to come. Chino made it sound like (in an interview uploaded this month on KZread) that he's just chilling and liking it and in no rush to put out albums but it happens either way. Here Stef is excited to improve and I'm sure that could mean he wants to have people hear it through albums in the future. Maybe I'm just making shit up. Point is I'm happy and I can't wait for GORE!

Steph speaks like a true songwriter, he doesn't really care too much about gear as long as it sounds great and is reliable. He can do everything with what he's given.

He's been on record as saying that he often chooses gear based on aesthetics..."so long as it looks cool, I'll play it" the best mentality!!

+William Lima I honestly don't blame him. The sound on Gore sounds more like Chino's other side projects. Teamsleep/Palms. Rather than a DEFTONES cd.

I prefer to say that Gore shows us a different kind of metal, and Steph did an excellent job in this album.

I hate the sound of Gore.
Damn and here I thought he'd stop using that axe-fx bullshit and get a fucking amp. Well guess I won't start having any amount of respect for him nor will I start listening to his music. His esp tele is still cool though.
