I think Vai's best tones came from his Carvin x100b's back in the 80's. He also didn't go crazy with effects so it forced him to play more clean and it worked great. Satch on the other hand always had a pretty good sound imo. Especially with his old Marshalls. Technology changes, and so do the musicians' preferences for gear and sound. Sometimes not for the better lol.

Nick Costa Ive seen satriani a few times and he and his tone were awesome. Vai was on another level. It was like nails on a chalkboard and he was way louder than the rest of the band. He was such a poseur too. He seemed cooler when he was with DLR and earlier bands. I just saw him the one time when he had Devin.Townsend. Maybe it was the sound guy that fucked up his sound. Who knows?

When he does these demos it's through his hands and his sound so it's difficult for me to relate to some of the clean tone Fender sounds or Marshall distorted sounds that I'm used to. None the less I love watching him play and his enthusiasm is contagious.
