    I had the first edition of the Legacy head, signed by Steve. The clean channel was genius. The overdrive channel was a little dark to my taste, it might have been tailored to Vai's JEM guitars. I needed more channels than two so I later sold it to go to Custom Audio Standard Plus. Great amp for the money, great memories.

    Steve is absolutely correct. The tone is basically the Preamp. The power amp just magnifies the preamp signal. Once you have the preamp the way you like it, then your off to the races... Steve is just a jewel.. I'm thinking of going to an all pedal board solution..preamp pedals, all anlogue, going to a pedal board amp into a cab and or FOH. I am too old to carry around amps. 😛😉

    I was surprised than Reinhold and Steve never made it happen. He seemed to be a natural for Bogner, what with that creamy, sustain for days preference of distortion. His Legacy amps most certainly had a bit of "Red" in their DNA.

    Steve is always such a thoughtful, engaging guy. Great interview. I love the idea of a modular preamp system, though multiple companies have tried this and it always seems like a proof-of-concept exercise that causes option anxiety as opposed to an actual solution. Why wouldn't Steve just use something like a Kemper to get 99 percent of the mojo of his studio amps? Curious.

    Because its not 99% it is 90% if you are lucky. And that 10% (or 1% if you want) its the important part: attack and harmonics.

    While most of the sound does come from the preamp section, the magic of a great tube amp such as a Marshall plexi era super lead is found in the output stage when you've got it cranked and the output tubes are starting to clip and the output transformer is reaching magnetic saturation which adds its own grind to the mix. You can't really replicate that in any preamp.

  • @ThisOldMan44
    @ThisOldMan444 жыл бұрын

    Vai had a great tone with the original Legacy, for his style of playing. However, each new version seemed to be worse than the last, and seemed more to be a pricing decision vs. a tonal one. I for one was really hoping he would team up with Friedman, when Carvin folded. I'm sure Dave would've worked extensively with him, and he's the best in the business right now for working with artists to get the tones they want. His live tone with this new module seems to be a big step in the wrong direction (in my humble, and non-important opinion). The biggest pitfall of being an absolute legend as a guitar player is ....who's going to walk up to him and say "Steve, your new tone sounds like shit"? No one that wants to keep their job with him will do that. When you never get told that you're making a shitty decision is easy to think you're a genius.

    All the tone/sound is not in the pre-amp:) I have tried them all, and oddly my most favorite ever is a Crate Power Block, using just the power section, and I dumped a MESA for that:) hahahahaha... The trick with power amps is to not make them so clean:) People ask me, "How do you get such sweet highs that don't hurt your ears?" :) I'm Headrush now, and it's a little HARD. I wish they would add different preamp tubes, because there is more variety in tone there than the rest of the tone chain:) Probably going with the next Fractal floor thingy, because I like that a little better... NEVER going back to the Rack tho. or heads and speakers:)

    Why is he insisting there is latency in Digital. I have a line 6 HXFX, a Mooer preamp live and I go into a Boss Katana 2x12. There isn't a trace of latency anywhere and the signal goes through a lot of digital stuff.. It isn't 2009 anymore guys. If he is trying to sell this product route over others, based on latency, he isn't being honest and deliberately misleading you.

    You know nothing. Digital has at least 1ms latency, some devices 5ms..it depends. Yes its hard to notice if you always played digital. Usually less than 10 is playable. For 99% of the people is fine, but let's respect the preference of this guy who has been playing analog gear for decades.
