I got this in CD in 1990. Playing it heavily for over 20 years.. This is VAIs Dark side of the moon. The impact on the guitar players was stellar. How there isn't a VH1 documentary is beyond me.

Absolutely. Hearing this record for the first time is a definite spot in my memory where I see there being a clear before:after in terms of my thinking, focus, and perception of “possible.” Where music is concerned, at least. I’d kill to watch a feature doc on P&W. Clearly, I’m not the only one.

I was about 11 or 12 when I bought this album and it just flew over my head. I couldn't grasp the complexity and eclectic nature of this brilliant work. Coming off the more conventional satriani, vai was unlike anyone I'd ever heard. Of course, over the years, my appreciation for this has grown in leaps and bounds. Still my fav vai album ever.

God that's incredible to know he made this album without and outside incentive to do so. No record label, no money and it's one of the best guitar albums of all time in my eyes! It was an album I grew up listening to and know every note of. What an inspiration, when I myself am about to record a new album without a record label either! Just make the music and things will happen.

When 'Passion and Warfare' finally dropped in Apartheid South Africa I was an isolated teenage guitarist trying to figure shit out. You could just as well had me be kidnapped by an alien...it was life changing. I could not wrap my head around the mastery of Steve's work and it felt impossible. The most valuable lesson I got from that album was that I needed to sound like me and become a great composer. This album will remain one of the most influential albums in rock instrumental history.

Steve Vai was the first concert that I ever saw. That is a feeling and a memory that will stay with you forever. He was with DLR in the Skyscraper tour and they came to Shreveport LA. I was 13 and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I was on the floor about 10 feet from the stage and it was fucking awesome. I vividly remember the triple neck heart guitar. He is an amazing individual and of course when Passion and Warfare came out it solidified him in the status of guitar god whether he wanted that or not. Genius cant stay hidden for long. Thanks Steve for that amazing memory and of course a big hats off to the 25th anniversary of PaW. Damn I feel old....... :D

Just loved the song writing on Crystal Planet. House Full of Bullets is blues rock though bro. You cant get a much bluesier riff than that. And I don't think Flying in a Blue Dream has a ballad on it that quite matches the passion of Love Thing. Love Thing is a stunning song. Plus I'm not slating him for trying but I'm not a fan of his singing so I prefer his Instrumental stuff, Flying is still a class album though but for me it's no better that The Extremist and it's no Crystal Planet JMO.

In 1991 I won a raffle and the prize was an Ibanez UV7 and a lesson with Steve Vai. It wasn't until 1992 that the lesson actually happened but I remember thinking, "I need to buy and familiarize myself with his most recent album just in case it comes up in concert at ion or whatever". So I went out and bought Passion and Warfare and listened to it virtually non stop for weeks. I remember being overwhelmed by the music because there was just SO many things in each song to listen to and take in. Passion and Warfare became (and still is) my all-time favorite instrumental guitar album. Even today, when I listen to it with headphones, I still hear things that I either never heard before or had forgotten about. I like to close my eyes as I listen and I can almost "see" the music in three dimensions. Amazing!

probably one of the most inspirational and pinnacle albums in my guitar journey..you along with greg howe taught me more about feeling and texture and how to make every note shine and how to make my music say something buy inspiring me with your music..that is probably the greatest gift that music has when we share our inner songs with the world,,the creativity that comes from inspiration how one song or melody can inspire hundreds or even thousands more, much respect for sharing with us all..but doing so you have in essence transcended your own enlightenment buy sharing and touching the souls of so many.music like you always say..brings us all together..no matter who you are or musical tastes or creed or color..your music is for everybody..no genre required.. and i truly thank you for being a most gracious musical ambassador and wish you many more years of musical creativity.

lol cassette here too. The plastic for the tape cover completely covered in scratches, the tape hiss ridiculously noticeable. That's how you knew it was a great album - you wore it out! :)
