Naming Ethers using IUPAC Nomenclature and Common Names in Organic Chemistry
leah4sci.com/organicchemistry/ presents: Naming Ethers using IUPAC and Common Names
Are you struggling with organic chemistry? Download my free ebook "10 Secrets To Acing Organic Chemistry" here: leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
This video is Part 12 in the Naming Organic Compounds series
The nomenclature tutorial video shows you how to name ethers using IUPAC nomenclature and common names. Examples include simple and substituted ethers, diethers and cyclic ethers, all following my puzzle piece approach to naming organic compounds
Many students struggle with naming because they attempt to come up with the entire name at once and often wind up missing a piece or two. After this series you won't have that problem anymore
Visit my website for additional naming tutorials:

Thank you so much. Your videos are so helpful. You explain it in a way that makes it easy to understand. I have a quick question could you also name 3-methoxy-2-butanol as 3-methoxybutan-2-ol. I keep getting confused on those.
@Leah4sci

Yes, absolutely! That is also an acceptable name, where the locant is placed in front of the functional group's suffix. Just a matter of preference.

Both are correct, just remember: If you're keeping the 2 before the -ol' then you don't drop the 'e' in 'ane' so it's butane-2-ol rather than butan-2-ol

But alphabatically, shouldn't it be Ethanemethoxy? Or is that rule not followed here?
@bellefeu4933
4 жыл бұрын
dont forget, eth-ane is not a substituent or functional group, it is the parent chain (first name-last name). Methoxy is the substituent

Why is it methoxyethane? Shouldn't it be ethoxymethane because of ABC? and Why is it cyclopentoxycyclohexane? Shouldn't it be cyclohexoxycyclopentane?
@melvilleasha

Asha Melville because we have to take the shorter carbon chain as the prefix and longer carbon chain as the suffix

When does the name end with the word ether?
@Leah4sci
2 жыл бұрын
The name would end in "ether" only in a common name. IUPAC nomenclature dictates that ethers be named as 'alkoxy' group substituents.

The cyclic part, why is it cyclopentane if it has 6 carbons???
@Leah4sci
3 жыл бұрын
At 3:24, the name of the parent chain is “cyclohexane” because the ring on the left side of the structure has six carbons. The other cyclic structure that is named as the substituent “cyclopentoxy” only has five carbons.
