Naming Esters - Organic Chemistry IUPAC Naming by Leah4sci
leah4sci.com/organicchemistry/ presents: Naming Carboxylic Acids
Are you struggling with organic chemistry? Download my free ebook "10 Secrets To Acing Organic Chemistry" here: leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
This video is Part 17 in the Naming Organic Compounds series
This nomenclature tutorial video takes you through the IUPAC rules for naming esters, a carboxylic acid derivative. Examples include simple, substituted, and aromatic esters
Many students struggle with naming because they attempt to come up with the entire name at once and often wind up missing a piece or two. After this series you won't have that problem anymore
Visit my website for additional naming tutorials:

Thank you SO much Leah! Your nomenclature videos have been helping me in a dire time of need. I love the way you start simple before moving on to more complex examples; a tactic my organic chemistry professor does not seem to find of importance. Yeah, so I am quite happy to have found you.

I will keep listening to your videos. They are helping me piece together unsaid points in the book. This is my second time taking ochem, I withdrew last semester. I am doing what it takes but I still feel lost after a days study. Ill keep at it though. Thank you for these videos. It is much appreciated. Four weeks left until my final. Im soo lost. ..

Very well put together, professional and asthetically pleasing. I've done my fairshare of videoediting and animation, and I can tellyour videos take time to put together so smoothly. Your voice is a lot nicer to listen to than my professor's too lol. I have an ester lab exam soon, so thank you very much for the help and keep up the great videos. =)

How can both be correct when oxo is for ketones and formyl is for aldehydes? This is confusing to me.
@kwistafa

I'd like to know the answer to this as well.
Isnt the prefix for an aldehyde Formyl?
@Leah4sci
Жыл бұрын
As a lower priority group, the aldehyde can get the prefix "oxo" or "formyl". The "oxo" is more commonly seen. For more on Functional Groups, make sure to see my tutorial at Leah4sci.com/Functional

In the last example why are we giving preference to one benzene ring Can the name of that compound be diphenyl methanoate??
@Leah4sci
7 жыл бұрын
That doesn't follow IUPAC nomenclature rules, also keep in mind that the group holding the carbonyl is different from the group attached to the oxygen and therefor must be referenced separately in your name.
helpful :)
