ഒരു കഥ :- (അച്ഛനും മകനും ടൗണിൽ ആണ് താമസിക്കുന്നത്. അച്ഛൻ ഒരു കമ്പനി യിൽ മാനേജർ ആണ്. മകന് 15 വയസ്സ് ആയി.മകൻ ഇതുവരെ ഗ്രാമം കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. fast food ഉം മറ്റും കഴിച്ചു വളർന്ന മകന് നെല്ല് എങ്ങനെ യാണ് ഉത്പാധിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പോലും അറിയില്ല. കർഷകരുടെ ആഡംബരം ഇല്ലാത്ത ജീവിതം അറിയില്ല. കർഷകർ ഒരു ആഴ്ച ചിലവാക്കുന്ന പണം അച്ഛൻ ഒരു ദിവസം വീട്ടിലേക്ക് ചിലവാക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് അവന് അറിയില്ല. ഇതിന് ഒക്കെ സാധിക്കുന്നത് നമ്മൾ പണക്കാരായത് കൊണ്ടാണ്, അച്ഛന് നല്ല ഒരു ജോലി യില്ലായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ നമ്മളും ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ ആളുകളെ പോലെ പാവപ്പെട്ടവർ ആയിരിക്കും എന്നൊക്കെ മകനെ പറഞ്ഞു മനസ്സിലാക്കണം എന്ന് ആ അച്ഛൻ വിചാരിച്ചു. അതിന് അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തിയ മാർഗം മകനെയും കൂട്ടി ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ചെല്ലുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു. അവിടെത്തെ ആളുകളുടെ ജീവിതം കാണുമ്പോൾ തന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ഒരു വലിയ പാണക്കാരനാണ് എന്നും ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ പാവപ്പെട്ടവർ ആണെന്നും മനസ്സിലാകും എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കരുതി. അങ്ങനെ യാത്ര തിരിച്ചു. ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ എത്തിയപ്പോൾ അവർക്ക് അവിടെ യുള്ള ഒരു പ്രദേശവാസി താമസിക്കാൻ സ്ഥലം കൊടുത്തു. രാത്രിയിൽ അവർക്ക് കഞ്ഞിയും ചമ്മന്തിയും കൊടുത്തു. അവിടെ വൈദ്യുതിയൊന്നും ഇല്ലാത്തതിനാൽ നിലാവിന്റെ വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ ഇരുന്നാണ് കഞ്ഞി കുടിച്ചത് കൂടെ ഒരു ചെറിയ വിളക്കും. പിറ്റേന്ന് രാവിലെ പ്രഭാത ഭക്ഷണമായി കപ്പയും ചമ്മന്തിയും കഴിച്ച ശേഷം മകൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ കുട്ടികളുടെ കൂടെ പറമ്പിൽ കളിക്കാൻ പോയി. ശേഷം തോട്ടിൽ പോയി കുളിച്ചു വന്നു, വീട്ടുകാർ തന്നെ കൃഷി ചെയ്ത് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ അരി കൊണ്ട് ആയിരുന്നു ഉച്ചഭക്ഷണം. വൈകുന്നേരം അരിമണി വറുത്തത് ആയിരുന്നു ചായയ്ക്ക് കൂട്ട്. ഇങ്ങനെ യുള്ള രണ്ടു ദിവസത്തിന് ശേഷം അച്ഛൻ മകനെയും കൂട്ടി പട്ടണത്തിലേക്ക് യാത്ര തിരിച്ചു . യാത്രക്കിടെ അച്ഛൻ മകനോട് ചോദിച്ചു "ഇപ്പോൾ നിനക്ക് മനസിലായില്ലേ ഗ്രാമവാസികൾ എത്ര പാവപ്പെട്ടവർ ആണെന്ന്? നമ്മൾ എത്ര ഭാഗ്യവാൻ മാർ ആണെന്ന്? നമ്മൾ പണക്കാർ ആയത് കൊണ്ട് നമുക്ക് കഷ്ട്ട പെടാതെ പട്ടണത്തിൽ സുഖമായിട്ട് കഴിയാൻ പറ്റുന്നു. ഇതൊക്കെ മനസ്സിലായില്ലേ..?". അതിന് മകൻ പറഞ്ഞ മറുപടി ഇപ്രകാരമായിരുന്നു "എനിക്ക് എല്ലാം മനസ്സിലായി അച്ഛാ. പക്ഷെ അച്ഛന് ഒന്നും മനസ്സിലായിട്ടില്ല". മകൻ തുടർന്നു : " നമ്മൾക്ക് ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കണമെങ്കിൽ നമ്മൾക്ക് പണം വേണം, പക്ഷെ അവർക്ക് വേണ്ട. നമുക്ക് ഫ്ലാറ്റിൽ താമസിക്കാൻ വാടക കൊടുക്കണം,നമുക്ക് വെളിച്ചം കിട്ടാൻ കറന്റ് ബില്ല് അടക്കണം,പക്ഷെ അവർക്ക് പകൽ സൂര്യനും രാത്രി മാനത്തുള്ള ചന്ദ്രനും വെളിച്ചം നൽകും, കാറ്റ് കിട്ടാൻ നമുക്ക് മുറിയിൽ ഫാൻ വേണം. പക്ഷെ അവർക്ക് അതില്ലാതെ തന്നെ തണുപ്പ് കാറ്റ് കിട്ടും. നമ്മൾ ഒരു പട്ടിയെ വാങ്ങിയത് പൈസക്കൊടുത്താണ്, പക്ഷെ അവർക്ക് പൈസ ഇല്ലാതെ തന്നെ ഓരോ വീട്ടിലും രണ്ടും മൂന്നും പട്ടികൾ ഉണ്ട്. നമ്മൾ പൈസ കൊടുത്തു സ്വിമ്മിംഗ് പൂളിലും പാർക്കിലും പോകുമ്പോൾ, അവർക്ക് പൈസ യില്ലാതെ തന്നെ അതെല്ലാം സാധിക്കുന്നു. നമ്മൾ വലിയ വില കൊടുത്തു fruits വാങ്ങുമ്പോൾ അവർ അതെല്ലാം വീട്ടിൽ തന്നെ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. ഇതെല്ലാം സാധിക്കണമെങ്കിൽ നമുക്ക് പൈസ വേണം, പക്ഷെ അവർക്ക് ഇതിനൊന്നും പൈസയുടെ ആവശ്യമേ ഇല്ല. അത് കൊണ്ട് അവർ നമ്മളെക്കാൾ എത്രയോ ഭാഗ്യവാൻമാർ ആണ്. നമ്മൾ അല്ലെ അപ്പോൾ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ പാവപ്പെട്ടവർ!? ". ഇത് പോലെയാണ് നമ്മളും നമുക്ക് വില കൊടുക്കാതെ കിട്ടുന്നതെല്ലാം അമേരിക്കകാർക്ക് വലിയ വില കൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ നമ്മൾ അല്ലെ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ പൈസക്കാർ.

എല്ലാറ്റിനും 99 സെന്റ് എന്ന് ചേർത്ത് പറയുന്നതിനും പകരം തൊട്ടടുത്ത ഡോളറായി റൗണ്ട് ചെയ്ത് പറഞ്ഞാൻ വളരെ ഉചിതമായിരുന്നു. കാരണം ഇവിടെയും എല്ലാറ്റിനും 99 എന്ന് ചേർത്ത് വിലയിടുന്നത് ഒരു പരിഷ്കാരമാണല്ലോ. സാങ്കേതികമായി അത് റൗണ്ട് ചെയ്ത് കണക്കാക്കുകയാണല്ലോ calculator ഒഴിവാക്കി കണക്കു കൂട്ടാൻ എളുപ്പം. ഉദാഹരണം ഒരെണ്ണത്തിൻ്റെ വില 3.99 എന്നാൽ 4 എന്നു പറയാം. അതിനെ 77 കൊണ്ടു ഗുണിക്കുന്നതിനു പകരം 75 എന്നും റൗണ്ട് ചെയ്താൽ 4 × 75 = 300 എന്നൊക്കെ പറഞ്ഞാൽ കേൾക്കാൻ ഭംഗിയായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് എൻ്റെ കമന്റ്.
