Naked Sports Bike of the Year: Fast Bikes discuss the seven best ‘Nakeds’ on the market in 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Bruce and John review a week of testing the Seven Sexiest Supernakeds on the market, rating each as they went on track and road to reveal a final order of preference in a truly epic test which could have only one winner. Keeping it fair each bike ran on a brand-new control tyre, the Dunlop GP Racer D212.
To do a proper job takes time, especially as each of this magnificent seven offer huge amounts to discuss, so rather than cut the feature short please find the time codes for each bike below in alphabetical order. Preferably though make yourself a brew, sit back and take it all in.
36:00 APRILIA TUONO V4
20:10 BMW S 1000 R
42:22 DUCATI STREETFIGHTER V4 SP

To give Yamaha credit there is a SP version that comes with upgraded brakes, steel braided lines and the latest gen of Ohlin's electronic suspension. That version might have been a bit more appropriate to go against these much higher priced machines.

I've owned 3 of these bikes (KTM, Triumph and currently, the new MT10) and I've ridden everything else. Honestly can't believe you place the Triumph above the MT10 for the road (and possibly even the track). MT10 will ride all day in Power mode 1 (which I seriously don't believe is snatchy) without any lack of immediate low end grunt and along with the Aprilia, has the most characterful engine. Agree with you on the KTM, think it's absolutely the best all around bike, but it's so good, you need to be doing silly speeds for it to make sense. Downside is KTM reliability, hence why I have my second MT10. Triumph suspension is a nightmare and the harshness cannot be dialled out, I know my suspension and tried everything without success. Equally, its electronics are shocking and the quickshifter has a carzy amount of delay biolt in which cannot be adjusted. Aprilia too tiny and uncomfortable for anyone over 5ft 9" but great otherwise. Ducati nearly £30k (come on guys, let's stay in the real world). I tested the V4S model and it's great, but you simply cannot use the power on the road, so what's the point. If you want a Ducati, buy the Streetfighter V2 and use everything it's got. BMW is ergonomically similar to the Aprilia and very tight on leg room, so not comfortable. MT10 suspension is set a fraction hard for the road, but dialling out is easy and a good set up can be achieved for road or track. KTM definitely has the most compliant suspension and regardless of it's engine, the Kawasaki rides like a barge and is more of a cruiser than a sports naked and should be compared against Diavel's and the like. Ultimately, you place the Yamaha last which I believe is doing an injustice to the bike. I've bough my second one (after stacking up all of the options) because it has what is probably the most wonderful engine that's ever been created for a bike. It is all day and even touring comfortable (when fitted with comfort seat), handles just about perfectly on the road (and decent on track), is as fast as anything to 140mph, has typical Japanese reliability and you can buy two of them for the price of the Ducati and have enough spare for a year's worth of track days. My order with my experience would be KTM 1st followed by MT10, then Aprilia, Ducati, BMW, Kawasaki and Triumph last. As said, reliability is the KTM's sticking point (but great when they're working) and I won't personally be buying another. Cheers.

Thanks for this great view. I'm currently looking at a supernaked to join my CBR600RR in the garage. I'm favouring the MT10SP for many of the reasons you state. I want to open the garage and my bike works. I've heard too many horror stories from many of the European brands.

  • @Tig-Boy

    @Tig-Boy

    11 ай бұрын

@@King_Harrold Hi. If you are looking for an all day comfortable naked with superbike performance, incredible character and handling to match, I seriously don't think you would regret buying the MT10. As nice as the SP looks, I'm still not convinced that electronic suspension works as well as standard suspension with a good set up. There have also been many reliability issues with electronic suspension, but to be fair, Yamaha seem to have it more sorted than most. I think Ducati have the reliability sorted now, but other European brands including BMW still lag behind the Japanese. Just simple things irritate with some European brands, for example, every single BMW I've owned has used copious amounts of oil. The Japanese bikes never use a drop, so it's one less thing to worry about. Anyway, whatever you choose, enjoy it and ride safe. Cheers.

Absolutely mint condition and loaded with power parts. Very keen to pick it up and get riding. Borrowing a friends Super Duke R for a couple weeks was the most fun I've had on a street bike. What a monster. Yes on the 2nd gear launch. My friend advised it, said first gear was for parking lots not launches. Never had the nerve to turn the wheelie control fully off. Confident flying through the hills and easy to poodle around on, the full exhaust system on it made it sound like God's motorcycle. Thunderous. Looks mean, sounds mean, feels like flying since you have to actively look down to see any motorcycle. What a badass bike.

I have an NT1100 which is widely considered one of the most complicated to operate (switch gear + layout of menus) and in a couple of days i got used to it and its fine now. These are nitpicks and are not real issues with the bikes. Fuel range, vibrations, seating comfort, motorway and cruising manners, low speed manoeuvrability, quality + fit and finish of switchgear are all far more important and are barely covered by these tests. Also comparing a 35k ducati to a 15k yamaha is lunacy. Its like comparing a Rolex with a Swatch on the basis that they are both watches. Euro bias is real.

You know the problem? I wanted a Tuono really bad this year, to upgrade my 2007. Well, it's $10K after taxes more than the fully loaded Super Duke 1290R Evo. $10K! In six years Aprilia added something like $9000 to the price of their bike, which was when I last priced it. So I'm just waiting for the email from the dealer to tell me that the 1290R has gone through PDI and OMVIC so I can pick it up.

Ok one thing I'll have to add for the street riding performance is fuel consumption. You picked the SDR for the win (I also ride a SDR) one of the other things that sold me on the bike is it gets close to 2x mpg/kml then the other bikes no matter how easy you ride the engine. Anyhoo fabulous review, I enjoy all of your videos immensely. Keep up the good work.

Some folks want a bonkers motorcycle with the practicality of a street naked, upright ergonomics, ease of maintenance-access, lower insurance kind of bike. Getting 42 mpg instead of 32 mpg with the same horsepower... what's not to like?

In my experience the Aprilia interface on adjusting the electronics is quite easy. But, if you didn’t know to press and hold the Engine map button to launch the electronics main menu it would be impossible to figure out. Once that menu is open everything is there and easy to adjust.

I have a new MT10 on the way, ordered in March and arriving early November. I'm pretty sure a set of sintered pads, a straight through link pipe and a flash will make it more like the other bikes in this list. I'm expecting about another 15-20 ponies so better stoppers are probably a good idea. That's what's in store for mine once it's in my hot little hands.

It makes sense the ktm was slower on track than it felt and was expected. The ktm motor is geared towards the mid-ranged power losing some of its top end. The reason it still feels faster than it is on track is a mix of: head position, lack of windscreen of any kind, and the shorter wheelbase which enables easier wheelies on command.
