NAD, NAC, NMN, NR, Glutathione... What are the differences?
In this video Dr. Payam Hakimi details the potential uses of these molecules and their differences.
NAD: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) also known as miracle molecule helps in mitochondria to boost ATP levels
NAC: N-acetyl cysteine has many different actions including helping detoxify the liver, lungs and kidneys.
NMN: Nicotinamide Mononucleotide is a precursor to NAD
Nicotinamide riboside is a precursor to NMN and NAD.

Large doses of anything, including water, can damage physiology. The question is why would one want to take large doses of anything. This is something we learn in medical school: "Start low, increase slow." It is important to start at lower doses and slowly increase to adjust the dose in each person.

@Body of Harmony Dr. Hakimi-- thank you very much for your videos. Can you tell me how important a role NAD may have in post viral syndrome and recovery? Also what other IV therapy as cofactors may important to pair with NAD in this case? Recently during my research I read a opinion from a medical professional that they did not like infusion NAD because it was a large molecule and there were questions about is use in the IV form-- not sure what that means. Why is NAD IV so expensive? Thank you.
@BodyofHarmony
Жыл бұрын
Let me start by saying: medicine and health are not as black and white as some physicians have made it. Since the physiology of each person is different so is their response. That is why in our office everyone gets their own specific plan. I would stay away from physicians who make comments about certain treatments without any education or experience in that subject. NAD may help with some of the residual symptoms of viral infections, bacterial infections, yeast infections, mold infections and parasitic infections... but the effect will be different from patient to patient. Production of NAD at this point is still expensive so is the price. NAD may be followed, if your physician approves of it, by another IV for certain conditions. In essence following NAD with ingredients that increase Mitochondrial function is preferred. You can find a list of these supplements (in oral form) in the link below: bodyofharmony.com/collections/atp-generation-nad-support

How long or consistently should NAC be taken to take full effect?
@BodyofHarmony
Жыл бұрын
It all depends! Since NAC converts to Glutathione, which is a very strong anti-oxidant in the body some people take it on a regular basis. Others take it for a duration of time for a specific condition: for example during cold or flu, kidney or liver issues, lung issues... and once that is over they stop taking it.
Is it true that NAC can deplete DAO in the gut and raise histamine ??
@BodyofHarmony
2 ай бұрын
Limited evidence: The research on NAC's impact on DAO is limited, and more studies are needed to confirm the effect and establish safe dosage ranges. Dosage dependence: The potential effect on DAO might be dose-dependent, with higher doses having a greater impact. Individual variability: People may have varying responses to NAC, and some might not experience DAO depletion or histamine issues. People's DAO activity levels vary naturally. Those with already low DAO activity might be more susceptible to histamine issues with NAC.

Angela, it depends on what an effect means, but generally speaking, everyone has a different physiology and the time lines are always different. Because of its potential multiple benefits a lot of our patients stay on NR. And as I mentioned everyone feels it differently. We usually ask patients who are on anti-hypertensives to be careful with it. Meaning, once they start NR they should monitor their blood pressure regularly. Theoretically speaking NR can decrease blood pressure. So, if and once a patient's blood pressure starts decreasing they can ask their physician to decrease the anti-hypertensive medication, if they are planning to continue with NR.

I do not advise starting multiple supplements at the same time. In case you have a reaction (side effect) you won't be able to know which one caused it. Also, you would want to experience one and see how it makes you feel before adding or trying another one of them. However, at a certain point you can be taking all of them. When taking multiple supplements which affect one pathway I recommend starting with very small amounts and increasing to the regular dosage gradually. Make sure your primary care physician approves of these supplements for your medical history.

There are theories hypothesizing that there might be a relative risk of exacerbating cancer based on the Glycolosis pathways NAD+ is responsible for more than 500 reactions in the body and the primary source of energy to the human body. On the other hand some of the reactions NAD+ is responsible in are in DNA repair enzymes potentially reducing the chance of cancer. NAD+, through the effects of PARP’s, may both suppress and progress tumorigenesis, this might be related to prevention of DNA mutations. NAD+ should not be used in breast cancer treatment or any cancer treatment which uses PARP inhibitors. Animal studies of wild type mice has failed to provide any evidence of increased tumor size or number. Interestingly, over expression off NMNAT3 raises mitochondria NAD+ and inhibits the growth of glioblastoma cells and supplementation with NA or NAM inhibits tumor growth and multi-organ metastasis in SCID mice. A phase 3 randomized trial of Nicotinamide for skin cancer chemo-prevention concluded Oral nicotinamide was safe and effective in reducing the rates of new non melanoma skin cancers and actinic keratoses in high-risk patients. If someone is undergoing cancer therapeutics they should stay away from all supplements unless they have been approved or prescribed by their hematologist / oncologist. For those with previous history or family history of cancers the same statement should be made regarding NAD+ boosters. Other studies involving FK866 to reduce the NAD+ did not show any tumor remission in patients with advanced solid tumors. Individuals with family history of cancers, previous history of cancer, suffering from cancers, or undergoing cancer therapeutics should not use NR, NMN, NAD+, D-RIbose, or any other supplements that may increase NAD+ without the approval of their hematologist or oncologist.

They don't have to be taken together. They each have their own pathways and purposes.

I have had kind of mixed reaction with NMN. I tool 1g NMN with 1g TMG (as recommended equal dose). I experienced spike of energy, urge to run and weight lift. After 12 hours, my blood pressure rose to 172/119 which took two hours to normalise. Is my NAD level already too high ? What was the reason for such spike in BP ?

What do you mean by "a mixed reaction"? Having more energy is a reaction of NAD+ boosting supplements. The reason for your high blood pressure is unknown. I recommend you continue monitoring your blood pressure twice daily and report to your primary care physician. However, keep in mind that if the rise in your blood pressure was due to the supplements (either to one of the supplements or to both or to the combination), they should be stopped.

@@BodyofHarmony Thanks for your reply. By mixed reaction, I meant that on the one hand, I felt very good whole day not only in terms of energy but also I was sharp and focussed but on the other hand, the rise in blood pressure let me down. I stopped both supplements the next day.

Does NMN or any other ones cause cancer by cell division of DNA which causes inflammation and cancer as I am 73 years of age. My parents both died of cancer.

If you worry about cancer your primary care physician should do a complete evaluation of you, blood work, cancer markers, and other medical history and information and decide if NMN is safe for use.

I believe you missed it. It was discussed in the video. The digestive process and liver detoxification decrease the amount (%) absorbed through oral route.

I would like to believe the information in this video as it is all explained very well. But dislike the fact that this doctor has a company that sells supplements.

A little more research! This is copied directly from Google: "Is NMN simply vitamin B3? No, NMN is not vitamin B3, but it is derived from it. Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, can be converted into NAD+ through a series of enzymatic reactions. NMN is a precursor to NAD+ that is formed by the addition of a phosphate group to NR, another precursor to NAD+."
