During my over 50 Years of Audio Journey, I had several systems as you can imagine from Power A to Power A/B.Recently I switched to NAD C-388 Power D and never looked back. Looking back the Power A and Power A/B sounded more on the warm side and a bit on the darker side and you realize that only once you switch to Power D which is cleaner, more precise more reviling at least for me . Matching a suitable speaker helps (in fact for any system) the kind of music you prefer plays a role as well. After over 50 years I'm not looking for the holy grail of sound I'm looking for convenience, the possibility to upgrade by a module to keep up-dated, fewer cables, need less space, and a nearly cool-running amp. I came to the conclusion that when you have a good recording most audio systems sound good if you have a lousy recording which today seems to be the new normal(too much compression) even on a very expensive system sounds poorly in fact even more. Botton line enjoy the Music first.

I have to agree with you by repeating your words -- when you have a good recording most audio systems sound good, if you have a lousy recording even on a very expensive system sounds poorly in fact even more! A good recording even in mp3 format still sounds good on my system or from a PC speaker.

I started with a C-388, agree that the bass compares favorably to other class amps. However, I preferred Class A/B amps (Naim, to McIntosh, to my current Boulder 865). All of which were much more expensive.....YMMV>

Hi, Great territorial on the NAD C298, I am looking to buy a new power amp, as my Cambridge power amp has stopped working, can is from the late 70s , I live France, and have problems with language and cannot seem to find anybody that restores vintage equipment around in the area where I live, However I have had quite a few preamps made by NAD , The one I’ve got at the moment is 314, So I need a new power amp and I have been looking at the NAD , The C298 is right at the top of my budget, However I have been looking at the C275 BEE which I think is cheaper, And it is to drive a pair of transmission line speaker cabinets 100 W at 8ohms , And I’ve just recently changed the driver units as I had problems when my power amp blew it took out the tweeter and damaged the woofer as well , so I have replaced them with SEAS , I have a very wide taste of music which might seem very strange at my age at 70 years young, Classical Hans Zimmer Opera Aida Garifulina Andrea Bocelli , heavy rock, Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd Metallica, Viking folk music and war music and various other along those lines. And my cabinets are by-wired , What is your comments and what would you suggest if you could please help me very much appreciated, Phil from the moulin France.

Hi. Nice review. Thanks. How would you compare this one to your Line Magnetic LM508 with good tubes on it? I have the LM508 and I prefer it over my based NC-502 module class D amp by far. Of course the LM-508 with good valves costed me about 2.5 times the price of the class D amp, but I find the LM-508 so much better with 3D imaging, tone, body, air, naturalness, etc etc. If you have medium to high sensitive speakers and you don't care about heat, power consumption, weight and valve relative short lifespan, I believe it's hard to beat a good valve amp with very good tubes. What are your thoughts about that?

Timing is everything. Starting and stopping a note correctly is essential to me, and may explain why after 35 years of various Musical Fidelity amps I've settled on a Naim 250DR. Since the DR's, Naims have retained their essential timing, but have now got more assets to add to their arsenal and can sound transparent and almost 'sweet'. Shame its not quite got the timing, but its interesting to see class D finally starting to be a proper consideration. Thanks for the video!

Another new Class D power amp causing some waves is the Peachtree GaN400 with its 400W of GaN transistors, so that might be worth a review as well.

Yes it is important to compare the two since they all share the same traits and audience looking for real Hi-Fi : top transparency, high-rez, high SNR and extreme low distortion. To me that's the only goal of an Amp, no color at all! (Then, if desired, with an add-on DSP to add infinitely kinds of different colors/flavors like some tube people look for but not limited by one specific tube/hardware can provide).

Great review, great channel! I‘ve just subscribed to it. How does this NAD C 298 compare to NAD‘s own C 268? It is roughly half the price with similar specs but without the Purify Eigentakt. I got two of those to drive my Monitor Audio Golds in bi-amping mode, but would like to understand how much better the C 298 would fare in real life over the C 268. Interestingly, there isn’t a single review on the C 268 on KZread, let alone a side-by-side comparison of the two power amplifiers. Something you would perhaps care to do? Excellent review, I like your delivery, communication skills, and your methodical process of explaining how the amp sounds and its character. This was one of the amps I was seriously considering to replace my aging Adcom 555 as well as the PS Audio M700+ mono amps which are also Class D. I agree the bass and mids is the latest Class D amps are great. The top end however still is not up to par compared to Class A/B amps. I decided on the McIntosh MC152 amp which is just a brilliant amp in every way. Though its clean, it has nice smooth sound. Plus it actually has closer to 200 watts than the 150 watts they claim it has.

Hi, For C298 having adjustable gain at back panel, do you know what type of gain control it is? is it variable attenuation, traditional variable resistor, or volume ic? this is important to me, because my pre stage is having high voltage level that i need a low gain power amp. but if the music signal will pass through that variable resistor which might be harmful to sound quality, than C298 may not be my choice anymore.

But in the mean time I have bought a Purifi Eval1 amp with a Hypex powersupply. This poweramp sound much better than the poweramp of the CXA81. First impression was the CXA81 has thinner mids and not the Purifi amp. The CXA81 is still not a bad amp, but the Purifi has a more neutral sound without being boring. NAD also use Purifi but with a homemade powersupply.

I am too familiar with the sound you are talking about, usually that slight buzzing is from the power supply or power transformers and will be irrespective of any speaker sound. I do have my stereo gear on an audio only power mains circuit (from my incoming outside AC power). I have had some recent tube amplifiers that have had that dreaded buzzing from their power supplies (transformers) on the same circuit anyway that buzzing if it occurs drives me crazy. Any amplifier cannot stop a "decay" of a sound sooner than what's in the recording. It either follows the recording to the dot (ie faithfully), or if the amplifier lacks control (has very low damping factor), your "decay" might get slightly extended.

Can all amplifiers produce the same level of transparency or delicacy with a recording? I ask because it would make sense that a ‘lesser’ amp wouldn’t be able to deliver on all aspects of a recording, it’s why some amps have a better top end while others provide more bass. I would have assumed the decay of a sound would depend on how open, transparent and importantly separated the sound was so it didn’t get lost amongst the other notes?

I owned this amp, and while it was good for the money, it was NOT a "unicorn" or "killer" amp. It sounds recognizably Class D, and although I think it is the best version of Class D I have heard to this point, it is still not on par with Class A/B for midrange palpability. OTOH if you pair it with a decent tube preamp like a Freya + and/or a tube DAC, one could flavor the sound to accommodate those like me who prefer a more "analog" sound.

One easy way to disqualify class-D is to listen to a DSD piano recording, aaargh horrifying! Intermodulation distortion in buckets. The Purifi 1ET400A is NO exception. When you have learned how it sounds, you will hear it in all kind of music, then go buy a class-AB amp and be happy.

That's an awfully large chassis for a small room (Pun intended). One of the possibilities with class D are smaller component size and weight but NAD is adhering to more standard sizing to match alot of existing equipment. I'd rather have smaller components. If they don't stack as neatly, I can improvise and some of us don't stack one component on another, particularly an amp. Looking at the inside of the unit, there's room to get rid of.

"Dark background and lack of noise and distortion" - isn't that nother way of saying that it stops when the music stops? That therefore likely explains why you don't get the 'decay' you like from Class A /Tube amps - it's noise pretending to be part of the music. Humans do like, psychologically - so I've read - sound decaying into low-level noise. It sounds more natural, even if it wasn't on the recording. Maybe it should be found more on the recording .. because it's pleasing?

It's heavy because the case is unnecessarily big. The effort behind this power amp is no better than the effort if a DIY'r. If you look inside, there are 2 small circuit modules, with a crazy amount of empty space around them. There aren't even attached to heatsinks; remember this is Class-D, so there is no desperation for heat loss.

Audio electronics have always been very expensive. The components and R&D cost a lot of money, the sales are low. There are many satisfying amps from big brands like Yamaha, Onkyo and Denon. They're huge manufacturers, with lots of resources and can produce many units at a lower cost. You could just get a Yamaha RS202 amp and a pair of Q Acoustics 3030i (or Klipsch Rp600M for a leaner drier sound) and have a very pleasant system. Some people just want the best, or something close (hence the higher costs and diminishing returns). Diminishing returns is a huge deal in audio.
