The 40 year transition period from the Cross to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD is the second Exodus. Thank you for confirming this with the structure of the book of Romans.

Old Covenant Baptism vs. New Covenant Baptism (water vs. Spirit) Water baptism was a part of the Old Covenant system of ritual washing. The Old Covenant priests had to wash before beginning their service in the temple. Good to read this educated "Clergy" understand some of the simple Gospel of Jesus, Not a reform of a broken system, but a restore to the Ancient path. 1 John 3:23, Eph 4:1-6 Titus 3:4-5

I find it interesting how water baptism occured at every conversion in Acts. Every passage that speaks of batism of any kind in Scripture associates it with salvation, however, so many in the Christian community today are extremely emphatic that it has nothing to do with salvation. Well, yes, salvation is by faith just like it took faith to get into Noah´s ark to be saved from the flood. (Peter´s illustration not mine 1 Peter 3:20-21). No one in the New Testament was ever told to pray the sinner´s prayer at conversion. They were told to be baptized (Acts 2:36-38; Acts 8:36; Acts 22:16). How can you make anything other than baptism the normative response to a person wanting to follow Christ? If your theology clearly conflicts with so much that seems to be so clear in Scripture, perhaps you should look at changing your theology. I love you all but I fear that Zwingli (who is the first theologian known to teach the sinner´s prayer) was a good man but not an inspired apostle.

Very insightful analysis. It was something similar I had with a Pentecostal. She had told me she was baptized because she wanted to dedicate fully to Christ's command. Truly baptism is integral to conversion

Right on man. I used to ask people at bible studies "when you preach the gospel, do you include baptism in the message?" Because there is no way that the Ethiopian eunuch picked up the idea o baptism from Isaiah 53. It must have been part of Philips gospel message. Which compelled the Eunuch to respond with " What is keeping me from getting baptized"?

I think connecting Romans so closely with Exodus in this manner is a large stretch. There is nothing contextually in Paul’s epistle to the largely Gentile Roman church that says he is retelling an Exodus narrative.

@@waynecollins6564 The "water" in John chapter 3 is the amniotic fluid all babies are born in. What does it mean when a pregnant woman says... "My water just broke"... ? However, Jesus told Nicodemus nobody can inherit the kingdom of God without being "born-again" of the Spirit of God. Millions of people who have been water baptized are not true believers. I used to be one of them.

Is the one baptism of Eph 4 Holy Spirit or water? JESUS commanded water baptism till the end of the age,,, apostles practiced it ancient fathers in 1st 2nd and following centuries obeyed His command. Not until Sola Fide came along did men discount its necessity. Would love to talk...very difficult discussing like this.

What about the man on the right side of the cross? He died without baptism.

Jimmy...the Thief on the Cross lived and died under the old Law where baptism was not required...New Covenant begins on Pentecost where Peter exercises the keys to the kingdom spoken of by the Lord in Matt 16...Acts 2:38 "repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins."

Comments ought to know the difference between justiification (upon commitment to Christ) and sanctification (through baptism as a gateway, for example). Basic theology anyone?

Moreover, dedred5, Col 2:12 Buried with Him in baptism, in which ye have been also raised with Him through faith of the working of God who raised Him from among the dead. You, being dead in offences and in the uncircumcision of your flesh He has quickened together with Him, having forgiven us all the offences.” Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ [of His body sharing His breath]. Joh 7:39 THAT Spirit was not bestowed Jesus had not yet been glorified.

The Old Testament makes it legal to hoard wealth, use force and to kill in war. Three things that the New Testament declares to be a dead creed most sinful. And so, if we want heaven, we must desire to do what is done in heaven.

Ok... Jesus said to BAPTIZE all the disciples. There's your heavenly command

I like that. It comes down to "Do I believe the promise of God or not?" Do I believe I'm "free from sin" (as it is written)? It comes down to identity. How do I identify myself? Do I say, "I'm a sinner"? Then you'll behave as a sinner. Do I say, "I'm free from sin"? Then I'll behave as one free from sin. It comes down to identity. But you have to believe HOW you've achieved this freedom. If you just think, "I'm free from sin" without any support then you're in a fool's paradise. You have to believe what the scriptures say adds up to freedom from sin. Peter told the people, "Save yourselves from this untoward generation". It's not magic. There is a mechanism for this freedom. When Paul is talking about freedom from sin, he starts off by describing baptism. (See Romans 6)

3:16 Dr. Dunnam's dumb question:...Paul's own baptism is described as "washing away of sin" Acts 22:16...and in the 3rd chapter of Galatians Baptism is described as putting on Christ Gal 3:26-27...

So one must be baptised with water to become dead to sin.

The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (1Cor.15:1-3). The thieves on the cross lived and died before Jesus resurrected and announced the terms of salvation for those living after the cross, under the NT. The gospel plan of salvation, to believe and be baptized did not apply to them. Jesus while on earth had the authority to forgive sins on earth at will. The thief was saved by Jesus as he forgave others under the Old Testament, now that Jesus is in heaven, no one ever will be saved as the thief, for Jesus now saves through the faith that was once for all giving to the Saints. There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism (Ep.4:5). If you remember Paul, he was not saved as the thief on the road to Damascus. Have you ever wondered why? He definately believed in the risen Savior, according to those of faith only, he would of been saved that instant, yet Jesus did not forgive his sins by "faith alone, and Christ alone" as many people hold to that view, but until 3 days later when Paul got up and went to get baptized washing away his sins. It is by the preaching of the gospel and obedience to it that we are saved today.

John 3:5 unless a man is born of water and Spirit, he can't see the kingdom of God, Don't you think the amniotic fluid argument doesn't make sense when you think about it, Like you must be born again and again. Titus 3:5 speaks of the "washing of rebirth pet 1:22-23 all of an cient church fathers taught its necessity,,,read first 16 chapters of Acts and see what they did to become Christians,,,Annanais told Paul to arise and be baptized to wash his sins away days after recognizing Jesus as Lord.

I don't believe Romans 6 is speaking about water baptism, but spiritual baptism whereby the believer in ingrafted into Christ. I would say the same for 1 Cor 12. Even if Paul is referring to water baptism, he is speaking of the type to refer to the antitype. If one becomes dead to sin by water baptism, those who lived before the rite were then not dead to sin.

How just how did you miss the part where he said metaphorical?? whether you call it spiritual or just baptism the point remains

Amen and all water baptism were in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins. No father son, Holy Spirit, water baptism ever occur in the Jewish oracles, because Jesus is the only saving name he died for our sins.

First: Christians are not baptised. Someone ‘in Adam’, having shared of the forbidden fruit, hears the Gospel, believes, requests baptism and is ‘in Jesus’ having shared in His death and resurrection [rebirth] 1Co 12:13, For also in one Spirit we all to one body were baptized, whether Jews or Greeks...all into one Spirit were made to drink...Rom 8:9, And ye are ‘fleshly’, but Spiritual, if indeed a Spirit of God doth dwell in you; and if any one hath not the Spirit of Christ, this one is not His

Wright's comparison between Romans and the Exodus does not add up. In Romans justification and peace with God came before baptism. By the way, Paul is not speaking about water in Romans 6.

Were Old Testament believers still in slavery to sin because they were not baptised? Wright places an unbiblical wedge between Old and New Testament believers.

Wright is making too much dependent on that which is done with hands. Paul said he came not to baptise but to preach the gospel.

Phillip, Thank you for your comments. I hope you are well. A quick response, it would appear to me that to Paul baptism is 'more than a symbol" as pointed out by NTW. Look at Paul in Colossians 2: 11-14 where baptism is described as a "work of God," not work of man. "buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.." In regards to your commentary on I Cor 1:17 ("came not to baptize"), I think this very passage emphasizes the actual importance of baptism. At first glance at this passage, one would think he was actually emphasizing baptism as a specific duty. But it would be smart to ask why was he emphasizing this point? V. 15 "so that no one should say they were baptized in his name?" Paul clearly didn't want the tendency of man to worship man (make idols of man), but Christ. He didn't want Christians to seperate/make divisions amongst themselves on the basis of they being baptized by him (or any other important Apostle). His reasoning actually pre-supposes the importance of baptism, otherwise why use it as an example? Paul's main purpose was indeed preaching the gospel (Great Commission no?), which clearly included the importance of baptism. I would say lastly that most reformation thinkers (and those in orthodox Christianity) take this passage to be water baptism. Paul clearly had water baptism in mind in other cotexts (Romans 6:3-4; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 3:26-27; Ephesians 5:25-27; Colossians 2:11-13; Titus 3:5) and this can be reviewed by looking at early church practice in the 1st century and beyond. I'll finish with a quote from a respected scholar's article on the matter regarding this specifiic verse: "Finally, such a view contradicts the main lesson about baptism to be learned from 1 Corinthians 1:10-17, viz., that it is considered to be important enough to be listed in the most exclusive of company. Verse 13 says, “Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?” Here we see three things to be considered by those who are in danger of dividing the church through their secondary allegiances to human leaders. (a) The church is Christ’s body. When you divide the church, you divide his very body. Do you want to be guilty of such an offense? (b) It was Christ who was crucified for you; it was Christ who performed the deed that purchased the church with his own blood. Don’t put me (Paul) on this exalted level with Christ; I have not redeemed you. (c) You were baptized into the name of Christ, not Paul. Don’t attach any human name to this act which relates you to the one head of the church. The point is this: why should Paul bring up the subject of baptism at all, especially in conjunction with the momentous events of the crucifixion of Christ and the potential division of the body of Christ, if it were not among the most vital and serious aspects of the very existence and life of the church? How could he so forcefully and in the same breath remind them of who was crucified for them and of the name in which they were baptized, if baptism were not in some sense worthy of such a conjunction?" So in two answers: A) for someone claiming he came not to baptize but to preach, he says it to a community who when heard the gospel were then baptized right afterwards. B) your making a reading where baptism only refers to spiritual baptism, but Christ himself commands his disciples to baptize other disciples. Baptism by hand is a very integral part of one's faith
