Mythological Gods And Homesteading

The myths and religions of ancient peoples from various locations and timeframes have certain things in common. I suggest these stories were meant as an educational tool on how to live a good life. I also believe homesteading as a way of life really falls in line with these teachings.

Right on Steve. I always enjoy your outlook on things and how you’re able to express them in a clear and precise way. Never any long winded BS filled with flashy videography, just you sitting in the woods sharing the wisdom you’ve garnered along the way. Perfect, many thanks.

I really appreciate hearing that from you. I would say the exact same thing about your videos. Hope all is well at Hermit's Rest.

Oh my gosh, yes. There is so much we need to take from the "old ways" when attempting to work things out on our properties and homesteads. I'm absolutely in love with doing things the simple way they used to be done, in almost any subject. I read "The Sacred Isle" by Daithi O' Hogain to learn about how pre-christian Ireland looked at the world around them. They were a nature based culture and when the light returned in the spring, it was everything, just like it is for us after a harsh winter. I also love to look back at the Victorian/Edwardian eras for domestic housekeeping advice as well, they just had all the good tips and tricks.

@@Chickenfoothomestead Absolutely! Thank you for The Sacred Isle book recommendation. I'm an avid reader and always looking for stuff like that. Along the same lines I liked Gilbert L. Wilson's Native American Gardening where he interviewed an elderly Hidatsa Indian woman about how they gardened in the 1800s. Also Fresh-Air Poultry Houses by an early 1900s veterinarian Prince T. Woods who documented how himself and neighboring farmers raised healthy chickens in cold climates without electricity. Glad those are still in print and wish there were more like it.

Some good thoughts there… I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my gardening or homesteading philosophy. There are so many other reasons to do this than just the utilitarian means to an end. It is good for the soul and builds a better more grounded more peaceful person. At least in my experience. Even if I didn’t want to grow food, I would still want to homestead. I feel closer to God in my garden than anywhere else. There is something very stabilizing and healing about the agrarian life.

I completely agree with you. I find it nearly impossible to be in a bad mood when you're surrounded by a healthy ecosystem of plants and animals.
