Surviving The Heat Off-Grid Without Air Conditioning

I just went through a little heat wave with the heat index around 115 for the better part of a week. Extreme temperatures make life really tough when you live off-grid without air conditioning. Here I discuss a few ways I've managed to get through it.

I was 60 yrs old when I got my first window air conditioner. I figured after all that time, I earned it. We never had air cond. when I was a kid, or power till I was 10 yrs old, no phone and outhouse. Never had an inside job, I was a hay hauler for 30 yrs, worked cotton gins and cut firewood in between. Always had a wood stove, still do, only heat I've got. Now that I have the a/c, it's nice and all, but I don't take it for granted.

I’m really glad you made this video. It’s good to see you’re holding up okay. Have you considered a small 2000 watt generator and small window ac to use during the most oppressive times? I only paid around $500 for my inverter generator and $250 for my ac. I get 10-12 hours out of a gallon of gasoline and the inverter generators are super quiet. I was planning a video on my Rubbermaid 150 stock tank, but haven’t gotten around to it. That’s how I stayed cool last summer before hooking to the grid. It’s basically just a big bathtub, but pretty light. It might not work well for you if your water is limited though. I also stayed with a family member when it got too hot, mostly for Darryl’s sake, until I built my on-grid shack (which includes a radiant barrier under the roof to help with heat). I wonder if that that would be an option. Might help with your mental state to be around people for a while too. Nothing wrong with taking a break to decompress and then get back to it. Take care of yourself

@@FatGuyinaLittleWoods I appreciate your concern, brother. Been the toughest of times, but I'm pulling through. The most difficult stuff is behind me and now I'm slowly healing. I did just get a window AC unit built into the cabin room addition. It's primarily there for when I get the solar system installed. I could run it off my gas generator if the situation got dire, but it's not too bad as long as I don't push myself too hard. I'm kind of finding it fascinating learning what I'm capable of making it through as primitively as possible. It's almost like a science experiment and I'll always have the results even as I get better infrastructure and more comfortable amenities into the future. Have a good rest of your weekend.

@@ReWildingOffGrid That's tough, especially when I'm sure there's so much you want to do on the new place. Hopefully some more mild weather comes our way for you. I just installed a window air unit into the cabin's room addition, mainly for when I get the solar system hooked up. If in a dire situation, I could run it off the gas generator. But like you said, that's resource intensive, noisy and clocks hours on my already well used genny. I really need that thing for running my power tools. At today's prices, it would sting to have to buy another because I killed this one running air off it. Stay cool and looking forward to more updates about how you're doing out there.

@@TheBackwoodsHermit EXACTLY! We’ve been running ours with the AC just enough to get the camper to cool back down and then we’ve got a couple of fans that we run off of the solar. The fans have really been a huge help to keep air moving. But yes! There’s just 2 more things (the hoop coop & the bigger solar array) that needs to be completed before we can live here permanently. Thanks for sharing. I’ve always done fairly well when it gets hot in humid here in Maine. It’s been in the 90’s with high humidity here, and that’s normal. But as I’ve gotten older, my body has failed me (normal process of old age). Last year the heat and humidity finally got me. My heart went into Afib. While the mind tells us we are okay, as you get older, the body tells you otherwise. I’m now one of those old people whom heeds the warning from the local weather channel, of staying where it’s cool during the heat waves. This year we finally had to buy two air conditioners, so I can function and breathe without putting stress on my heart. For those of you who are younger, enjoy your health. If you have good health, you’ve got it all. God Bless!

@@KatInTheNorth Wow, I'm sorry to hear about that, Kat. We do have to be careful as we age to take more precautions for our health. After an experience of the heart like that, I totally understand why you'd take extra measures to avoid the heat. A few years back, I got heat stroke chainsawing a large fallen branch in 100 degree weather. Learned my lesson about not pushing too hard in the heat. They also say after getting heat stroke that you're more susceptible to it happening again. Scary stuff. Take care and enjoy that nice air conditioning!

We can learn so much by observing nature and what the animals do to cope with the heat. When you add your solar system, go bigger than you think you'll need. Technology is getting better and cheaper everyday that you should be able to run a minisplit for cooling & heating with little cost. Look into a 48V system if funds allow.

I can't bear heat, but there have been times when I had no choice. I would be up before sunrise, often using a head lamp, put on the bug spray, and get outside to do what I could. Then I would do what you do during high sun--lay low, and then later in the day before dark, I would do some work again. Then clean up, go to sleep, and start over the next day, lol.
