Mystify Michael Hutchence - Official Trailer

A film by Richard Lowenstein.
MYSTIFY MICHAEL HUTCHENCE is a powerfully intimate and insightful portrait of the internationally renowned #INXS frontman, #MichaelHutchence. Deftly woven from an extraordinary archive of rich imagery, Michael’s private home movies and those of his lovers, friends, and family, the film delves beneath the public persona of the charismatic ‘Rock God’ and transports us through the looking glass to reveal a multifaceted, intensely sensitive and complex man. For an all too brief time, we revel in Michael’s Dionysian beauty and sensuality on stage and off. We listen to the range of his extraordinary voice and witness the charmed way he travels through life as he is propelled to world acclaim.
But Michael struggled with the idea of success, the creative limits of pop stardom and how to express his integrity; a longing that shaped his life and music and gave birth to a desire to go far beyond the constraints of pop.
A violent event strikes Michael and changes his life forever, fracturing his sense of self and robbing him of his connection to life. Made vulnerable, he is unable to navigate the complex challenges he faces moving forward and he has little defence against the onslaught of tabloid press that descends upon his world. Amidst the encroaching darkness, Michael’s new-born daughter, Tiger, becomes his one bright light.
Richard Lowenstein directed the majority of both INXS and Michael’s music videos and the 1986 feature film, Dogs in Space, in which Michael played the lead. #Mystify

I was in a band in the 80s and we supported INXS on their 'Listen like thieves' tour. Michael was very thoughtful and once stopped INXS sound checking too long so that my band could have a decent soundcheck. He was a star totally devoid of ego and a really sweet person.

I saw INXS live in the late 80's at their height, and he did have immense stage presence, he floated around the stage. But i also saw U2 live within that same time period right when they got real big with the most plain stage and just the band in black, i think Bono had more talent and presence then

Their music was soulful and wonderful to me. I even had a jean jacket with his face on one sleeve and Paul McCartney on the other that my brother made for me! I cried my way through the whole thing. And I'm the person who thinks it's silly when someone cries after a famous person they never met dies...this was an incredibly moving film. I was lucky enough to see INXS in August 1997; three months before Michael died. I'd been a fan since Kick, like everyone else, and was just devastated when I heard the news on November 22. Seeing this revealing portrait of the man behind the "show" was touching and makes me love him even more. I hope that he is at peace and knows just how much he is loved and missed to this day.

I saw Michael live three times (Kick tour and X tour in Milan, Elegantly Wasted tour in Wien), and they were memorable moments for me. Not only Hutch, but INXS were such a fantastic band ... they moved in perfect harmony, smiled at each other, emanating an energy hard to describe. But in the last concert, in Wien, if I remember correctly April 1997, I realized that there was something different about Michael ... a lot of energy ... a lot of love for the audience .. but also something self-destructive.. (he took off his shirt and shoes, threw himself on the audience or lay on the stage .. on his face there was joy and liberation, as mentioned in the trailer .. probably thanks to INXS, his brothers, he was forgetting his troubles).. like a star in the moment of its maximum brightness. At the end of the concert I stayed at the barricades for about an hour ... I looked at the people who were moving away .. but inside me I felt that something was wrong. It's been 22 years, but if I focus on that feeling, I can't help but cry.

I was blessed growing up in Australia and in the late 70's and into the 80's - music and the pub scene was just mind blowingly fabulous... we had so many talented bands and musos... How could you not be intoxicated by INXS and the huge part of that - was purely Michael... his unique voice and of course, just his mere presence that I don't even think he completely understood... I can remember being so excited about them being back in Australia - back rehearsing for the last part of the tour in 1997 and couldn't wait for them to arrive in Melbourne for the show. I still remember the devastation when the rumours rumbled across the radio airways that awful day - about his passing... it was just pure disbelief... and the tragedy of it - unimaginable... which ultimately all turned out to be true. I've seen the movie twice and cried my eyes out - the reality of all of what Michael endured - is just heartbreaking... And for all those people in the universe that think that Sir Bob is great... and even the rest of the band's selfishness - is foremost and present.....truth be told, Michael was always irreplaceable... must be hard to be reminded of this..... Clearly he was in trouble.... mentally, emotionally and physically - clearly he was overwhelmed and consumed with sadness, heartache, heartbreak and just feeling completely alone... Hard to believe when you are one of the world's most charismatic and charming - flawed human beings... RIP Michael forever... I miss you and your beautiful swagger and voice.... They were always brilliant live... He was blessed with untapped talent... all unbeknown to him... Kylie, he didn't just break your heart... he broke millions of hearts around the world... Thank you for sharing your personal memories and times... What an amazing docu - beats the "biopics" that have come out in the last 12 months... Thank you for sharing this incredible footage, moments in time and the care and love making it...

@julie woodagreed... yes you aren't allowed to say what you really want to say these days in public posts because the world has become so precious... but to say that I'm not a fan of "Sir Bob" or his alleged music/singing ability or in any way shape or form.. and I'd be jealous of Hutch.. he had it all.. magical and unique voice, so much charisma and swagger and talent.. and successful music career.. not remembered as a person who made money out of the feed the world concert back in '85... that really didn't change the world or people's mindsets to helping the starving people in Africa... but he became known because of it... I'm also not saying Michael was innocent in it all either....

Sam Smith .......nah, I agree with Kristin and I’ve seen a great many of the bigger overseas acts. Michael was an utterly unique frontman and INXS consummate, accomplished musicians and performers.

I saw this in Wellington last month at the NZIFF at the Embassy and was blown away. I was at Australian Made in 1987 in Melbourne and have seen Bowie and this was the most incredible performance I had ever seen. Not many have come close since. His head injury explained so much of why he got so lost. I really grieve for his beautiful daughter to not have had him for the rest of her life. I walked out completely stunned it took me days to get over the impact this had on me. I looked around the theatre and saw so many other people feeling similar mixed emotions. Thanks to the film makers it is incredible work and I am really grateful to have seen it. Aroha nui

So thankful for the great feelings that he, and the band, and the music have always provided me. I get frustrated when I think of the tragic end that he did not deserve. I try to imagine, if 97 didn't happen. Maybe one more resurgence for INXS. One more top 10 hit, with a successful tour in the era of an expanding modern media. Then, finally winding down, making mommy's dance at the 80's fests. Rock hall induction. Occasionally stopping by for a laugh, and sharing stories on tv . It just wasn't meant to be.

About a week ago I was doing something mundane and out of nowhere the song Disappear started playing in my mind. I found this to be strange and decided to randomly google Michael Hutchence and found an article about this documentary that was coming out about him.

I've had a blessed life... Saw INXS when they were hardly known at the Ocean View (I think?) at Toukley... Then so many nights in Sydney. Best night for me was at Selina's, Coogee Bay Hotel. Divinyls 1st with Chrissie in full flight followed by INXS. The "purple haze" was a fog that night... RIP Hutch...the GOAT of Rock's Front Men...

WONDERFUL. As a life-long fan of Michael-I believe this will do great justice and prolong the memory of this remarkably-talented individual-RIP. Everyone talks about Michael based on looks etc-but it is his MUSIC; His ART that we must take most into account, listen to, absorb and appreciate ; for that is what his main intent was for. The MUSIC.

This band has been my all time favorite since I first hearded in 1989. I will never forget seeing INXS in concert in Caracas, Venezuela on April 30th 1994 ( I still have the ticket slipped in the “Live Baby Live” album. When he died three years later I was crushed on November 22nd 1997. I just couldn’t believe it because he was an amazing artist, performer and sweet soul. A few months ago I have felt the urge to look everywhere for videos, documentaries, etc. In order to see them again. I surely miss Michael Hutchence and the band! Looking forward to see this new documentary.

From his funeral : Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush Of beautiful birds in circling flight, I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I do not die.

Never in my life have I seen anything like him before, he was part animal part human, moved like a cat and had everything... What happened to him was a complete and utter tragedy. That brain injury was far worse than first expected and it killed him in the end. There are lots of internet posts going about over this subject right now and its become apparent where he was heading.. :( He even started to forget lyrics in concerts during 1997..... yeah it all got too much and he was a suicide risk and then it went bang. Totally tragic. A talent like that. The taxi driver who did it needs shooting

In walking distance to Thornbury Picture House now for just over a year suddenly had a must watch this today and go there for the first time. Thankfully I did and have just come walked through my door. Through out the entirety I was acutely aware of my breathing, lulling around the moment when taxi driver incident occurred and taking it back again once Michael almost regained a sort of conscience. An 80s teenager was always impressed with the name of the band and the deliverance of Max Q, but never a massive fan until there was a song I'm searching into my brain on that Rave night where an INXS song was given a dance beat to it...Then I got it. Wasn't diagnose with ADD until the age of 38 now recognise a lot more about wax lyrical and others not. Heart felt thoughts to all and thank you Mr Lowenstein for putting this together.
