I remember visiting Kudowa Zroj in 1980 on my first return visit to Poland after being an exchange student there in 1976. We left Opole on a hot sunny day to visit friends in the Mountains. Little did I know it would be an overnight visit and the rain would turn to cold rain. We stayed in a cold water flat. We visited the skull chapel, drove through the Table mountains to the city with the beautiful basilica and mechanized Nativity scene museum, We walked around the spa area of Kudowa Zroj. Cherished memories, but overwhelmed at the time of the visit. One of highlights was when my friend asked if there was a place to wash our fresh strawberries at the garage we had a tire repaired at, she was sent to the wash room. She came quickly out with out the strawberries, with a very red face. As she started to wash the berries, she realized there was a man taking a bath in the tub. We set up our folding table with the table cloth and began our picnic. We were next to the collection of cars in need of repair. As we began to eat our picnic lunch, a man approached my friend with her basket of freshly washed strawberries!

Hello from hot Ohio. Might never make it to Poland, so in the meantime, truly enjoying your videos, history lessons and commentary. I wondered if Mark would have enjoyed "bone" broth for lunch - ha ha. Thank you for the English translations. I pause the video to try and pronounce the words; some are really hard. Haven't spoken Polish in over 20 years and grew up with parents who spoke Polish but wanted us children to speak English because they thought it would be best to have no accent when looking for work or going for a higher education. Looking forward to the next video.

I spent a month at a summer camp for Polish American/ Polish kids in nearby Duszniki Zdroj in 1985. What a beautiful part of the country and great memories. We visited the skull chapel. It was definitely a strange experience, but I don't think I was creeped out about it like Mark appears to be (and I was 12 at the time lol).

Ossuaires are more common in the South Greece and Italy. First, the bodies are buried in a shallow grave then when the bones are clean they are arranged in the ossuaires. This has a lot to do with space for human remains in smaller and more narrow land sites but also the Church’s belief in the Resurrection and the Second Coming of our Lord. The ossuary is a place of deep reverence and holiness. For a Christian, it is not a sad place but a place of Hope. The mass graves of the 20th Century are sad because of the history and the impious action of the executioners. There we ought to pray and often do pray with great reverence and piety and perhaps reparation of the brutality and evil intent of those who constructed those graves.

That storm was a floater. Yikes. Head-on fish bothers me not in the least. I've eaten in a restaurant while vacationing where the trout were live in their artificial "river". You picked out which one you wanted them to serve to you. Talk about fresh. It was lovely living vicariously through you guys, once again. RIP, bone people.

Mark, the bones thing is also common in Italy (churches again)....and in some Asian societies they bury the dead and wait a year and then dig up and display Grandma....remember that in the states we embalm/preserve, so going to "bones" doesn't happen in the same way.... this was a great episode....love the end food conversation, one can never over pack, specially snacks....

Beautiful mountain village, Reminds me of Colorado, although hippies are invading these areas. I visited an old Sanitorium in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Teddy Roosevelt used to go to especially after hunting trips. They have incredible Hot Springs. About the Bone Memorial. You never know about development and bones being pulled up. I am happy they do not allow pictures it is respectful. There is one in Cologne Germany, they are believed to be 10,000 Virgins Slaughtered. They found them when rebuilding the church. They placed them in a room. It is Sacred Ground. Blessed. I loved the music. Is it from Poland?

Greetings from Beaver Dam, WI. I don't know about Poland, but in Germany, the dead often give up their graves. Otherwise they would need to build cemetery skyscrapers (see Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica in Santos, Brazil). So Ossuaries are a way to still honor the dead without taking up so much space. (not sure the same would apply to mass graves. :O )

There are a couple of places in southern Italy where people are interred in the catacombs of churches from as recently as the 1920s I believe. It seems to be a part of the culture of these regions where the living look after the remains of those who have passed on and recall them as an integral part of the history of those towns, much like you would say "Old Joe was a carpenter, baker, doctor (whatever their occupation ) and he did x, y, z. Now he just enjoys his life". It's creepy to us because that level of keeping the dead in our lives isn't part of our lives, and also it reminds us of our own mortality.

The main reason for collecting bones for the chapel in Kudowa Zdrój was the fact that wild animals were digging up bones and spreading them around the area. That is why the Czech parish priest Václav Tomášek decided to transfer the bones to the chapel. This is a real fact.

In the mountains of northern Portugal on roads just like the ones you were "navigating" the drivers were always REQUIRED to HONK their horns going into a "blind" curve to alert another motorist, horse or donkey cart, etc. that YOU were on the way through it. This system worked amazingly well while people drove with their windows OPEN. Not so good when they were closed and the inevitable, horrible crashes would be the result.

I'm sure the chapel was designed to celebrate the communion of saints. Early Christians used to worship in the catacombs in Rome as a way of joining in worship with those who had gone before them.

Most suburban and urbanites too seem to think that the "meat, fowl and fish they see at the supermarket are BORN in those cellophane covered, plastic foam trays. SAD but TRUE!!! We have gone from a an agrarian society to one which has almost completely divorced itself from "farm life" completely!!!

Polish history except for WWI and WWII is almost NEVER taught in USA schools public or private. Only part of one paragraph I saw in my CATHOLIC SCHOOL history textbook was devoted to the foreigners who came to help the 13 American colonies achieve their efforts to achieve TOTAL independence from then greatest SUPERPOWER the world had EVER seen. The vast realms which the British monsrchs ruled over DWARFED the standard all others are STILL judged by, ie. IMPERIAL ROME.
