    Another informative video of a nice historical Polish city. The City Hall has a pretty unusual architecture. Interesting story of your grandpa picking a house Anna 😊 My husband did explain to me in more detail. Nice narration Mark and hope Anna will get to see her babcia soon. I was born in Stargard, most of my family lives there. Thank you for posting this video. It was very emotional for me - I knew all the streets you were walking around. I haven't been back in over 30 years when I left Poland with my parents, but it is so dear to my heart and I remember everything about it more than my mother who goes there a lot lol. My parents got married by the cathedral in the city hall, my babcias lived near the Mill on Okszei and Bieruta (street names may have changed since for some reason they love to change the names lol). Right across from the park with the ampitheater. I have a picture by the mill when I was little, still hanging in my room. My grandpa was a builder and helped to rebuild the city after WWII. I found some old pre war pictures online and boy was this a stunning city before it got destroyed and the 70's and 80's style buildings got erected. It is still very beautiful. I really miss it hopefully you guys will go there again. :) Love your shows.

The one in Trzebiatow is the tallest in the region and it's church bell is one of the oldest in Poland. Either way good job. P.S. I am originally from Trzebiatow there's some regional bias.

Dad, the family built a rock house out of the old stone wall surrounding some of our property. Dad worked with sone in one form or another most of his 96 years,- he loved working with stone and the looks of stone, and so do I, an old rock hound myself

    Please don’t misunderstand me. I don’t think masonry work is sad. On the contrary i find it to be satisfying and noble work. What makes me sad is that for many of these projects people worked their entire lives on it, and died before seeing it finished. Some of these structures took generations to build. Cheers.

I hope to see Wroclaw and perhaps Katowice once the plague has receded. I can get frozen pierogi and jars of bigps here but it’s a pale imitation (we have Polish restaurants too). Is there any big town to visit that you would particularly recommend to see in your particular voivodeship (apart from those that you have already shown)? Keep up the good work!

    There is no big town apart Szczecin in whole region. The second by population (Koszalin) is 100 000 inhabs. But small towns are worth visiting - 66 of them altogether. I can recommend seashore trip from Świnoujście to Darłowo; South-West part with cute medieval towns (Chojna, Moryń, Trzcińsko-Zdrój, Mieszkowice; former German and later Soviet military base Borne Sulinowo converted in 1993 into civil settlement + neigbouring towns of Szczecinek i Czaplinek (all three located in the woods by the big lakes).

    Where are you based at? You sound American, do you live in Poland? I ask because back in 2015, I wanted to hit the "Reset" button on my life, so I sold/donated to charity 95% of all my worldly possessions and got a one-way flight from my hometown of Salt Lake City, looking to restart my life somewhere in Europe, and hopefully find work teaching English (I taught high school in Utah for many years) and after travelling to several different countries sightseeing and enjoying the local culture, history and food & drink, I decided to go to Krakow for a week, to pay my respects at Auschwitz and just experience a new place that was totally unfamiliar to me. Long story short, that was nearly 6 years ago, and I am still here in beautiful, historic, safe, friendly and welcoming Krakow, and I am as happy as I have ever been in my entire life. I have been blessed with the opportunity to have travelled extensively in my life (20+ different countries, over 40 US states) but Poland is truly one of the world's "Undiscovered" gems, a wonderful country with a rich yet painful past but (in my opinion) a very, very bright future. Germans were forced to leave. My grandparents (of German descent who resided in Poland and were well to do farmers) were forced to leave farm, property, personal belongings everything behind. And were never compensated for their losses. So you are saying Polish just moved into those properties during and after WWII?

  • @markhurning8051

    @markhurning8051

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yup. The Potsdam Conference of 1945 moved the Polish border farther west. To some this was seen as compensation to the Polish people after Germany invaded Poland in 1945 and murderes millions of people. Remember Nazi Didn’t just hurt others, they invaded Germany first. Most likely your family fled the advancing Soviet Army well before the borders were moved. Many German families chose to leave than face the Russians.

    Many law abiding Germans who were not communist lived and worked hard to build up their wealth and help support the polish people. By producing goods and services. They had nothing to do with WWII but ( lets not sweep this under the rug) were unjustly forced to leave all they had worked for. Good, hard working Christian people. Those that left and now were forced into East Germany were basically told to remain silent about how they were treated (many died it was cold, and they left w/horse and buggy it by foot) ( those of German nationality were put in horrible labor camps - and often died) so...there were innocent German people who were treated very badly. They did not cause the war. My mother's brother was taken by gunpoint from their farm in Poland and never heard from again. Sort of a kick in the butt considering they had a full working farm and had provided fresh produce, goods and services to the surrounding Polish communities.
