James-she DID rob him, indirectly. There is no way she would not see someone lean in behind him and take his phone as she was facing that direction. Sounds like ahe set him up with the thieves
why would you think its your fault? Why do we blame ourselves when others prove to be untrustworthy or mean or dishonest? You did nothing wrong. You were being yourself. And your story is SO relatable and well-told.... made me feel the tension and embarrassment and angst right along with you. Thank you for sharing this with us. You are a great storyteller!!

Idk if it's just my cautiousness from the country I live in, but the idea that most people are trustworthy and honest is more of an unrealisitic expectation to me (like strangers specifically). Especially when you are outside, one should be pretty cautious to prevent stuff like this happening. But like man, taking out my phone, and putting it out of my eyesight in public is wild to me😂

Hearing you talk about getting lost in someone’s gaze when you’re attracted - can you be anymore damn adorable? 😂❤
Sorry that happened to you! What a pain. This is a good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables closer to your person e.g. in your front pocket and not open on the table when traveling.

As your friend said, what a story to tell, sorry the date and you didn't work out and such a mess happened with the stolen phone. Most of all thank you for always coming up with such personal and genuine stories, stories that not only we your viewers can relate to but also empathize with you. It would indeed be an honor to meet you and an excellent reason to visit Paris.
Being in the moment, paying attention to the conversation, and making eye contact are super attractive things to do, you were being so sweet! Unfortunately, even though Portugal is a safe country, ever since we had an increase in tourism years ago, these situations are more common...Sorry you had a bad experience! Hope that doesn't discourage you from visiting again 😅

Great story! Props to Bernardo for hearing you at 1am, I hope he was able to emotionally patch you up once you got inside :P
You are definitely a GREAT storyteller! Thank you for sharing your awful date in such an animated way.
This is the first time I ever comment, but just loved the story-telling so much, I had to. You have a gift, Nathaniel, and you are using it!
That quote, at the end, just resonate so much with me. Génial ! :)
Thank you for sharing this experience with us. It’s such a shame you had to go through this during what sounded like such a euphoric time! Drawing a positive from the situation it reiterates that material things don’t really matter and you (or your date) were not harmed during the ordeal! Yes it’s a pain, but things could always be a lot worse and I think looking at things this way change the way you perceive misfortune; building resilience, character and in this case vigilance. Wishing you the best!
This was terrifying but glad you got through it
I once was out for lunch in a touristy in London, and had my phone next to my coffee on the table, and my bag across from me in the seat. The waiter of the Cafe actually told me that there's a lot of theft in the area and told me to have my belongings closer to me, and I kept my phone in my bag between my legs. Ever since then I've been extremely cautious of where my things are when I'm out in public
Absolutely love your story telling... ♥️
Omg! What a story! I swearrrr youuu, we've all been in this place of chaos and panic and omggg what am i gonna do!? Ahh, its so soo human it hurts! Oh Bro, I really feel sorry for you. Especially for the fact, it affected you so much in that moment and you couldn`t enjoy your date anymore. I know how it feels to be stuck in this fight-or-flight-panic state and I wish you find a way to cope with it better in the future. All the best to you

I'm 41 and we grew up in an era without phones. I completely understand your panic but I still have a habit of leaving my phone at home and going about my day hahaha my phone at the end of the day is just there in case I need to check in with my mother or my sisters lol The lesson here is, the over reliance on ONE gadget for everything our lives needs to stop.

Same with me. I still write all of the phone numbers and contact info of friends in an actual notebook (with pen and paper!) just in case something happens to my phone. It's come in handy a few times. I also print out the pictures from my phone that I never want to lose.
Love your videos. QUESTION: Please tell me what brand/style are your glasses? Cool glasses.
OMG I can totally relate to your story... July 2019 - I was in Madrid traveling solo but also staying at my friend's place. I had a great evening with a Canadian couple, we had awesome time until my phone got stolen at 11pm in Taco Bell - a guy came over to our table asking for money with a cardboard in his hands, but really he used that to stole my phone under it. It was literally 3 minutes after we realized that happened but the guy was already gone. It was a struggle to get back at my friend's place, but I managed it and next day filed a police report (which obv didn't help at all). I ended up staying for 2 weeks in Madrid, and flying back home without my phone. I didn't even have a watch, so not knowing what time it is independently was so challenging, as well as not having all other possibilities our phones provide us. Anyways, I was traumatized about this whole situation as I also lost over 50k of photos & videos (my backup was damaged). Yeah, The Universe really said to me "Let's start all fresh and test your resilience!"

Ok the storytelling but the SOUND DESIGN along with it!!! Really enjoying the crap out of your videos man!

And what has you thinking she did not set him up??? No way that she was facing him, in direction of phone and not see the passerbys swoop down and pick up his phone! She played her part-a distracting decoy!
Brilliant TELLING of this story! Poor Nathan, you went from dreamboat to dork in seconds! I'm laughing because you told it so well. But you NEVER hear, see,or feel their presence. I dont know how they do it. Whether you're picnicking by your car at Dunkery Beacon with the boot open, drinking in a bar with your backpack right by your feet,or just on a crowded metro so you push your bag under the seat slightly so people won't trip over it. They take it,that one thing, they surgically removed it,and you never felt a thing. It happens. Good luck with yr ideas but I think you were born with that!
Dude you’re beard it’s so good!
I went through something incredibly similar once - arriving at an Airbnb where I was going to stay at 2 in the morning and realizing the host forgot to include the apartment number in the description. I also tried yelling the host's name and ringing every single bell in the building but no one came down to help me 😂
I just got home from two weeks in Lisbon. My phone was my lifeline for everything especially communication with the friends I was staying with. I cannot imagine what you went through. I’d’ve been a complete mess! At least you’ve got a great story 👍🏼

Lost in the moment could also be another way to name this video Nathaniel xD! but yeah it's like what your friend said in life it could be great things happening or great stories, i kinda feel jelous because i would like to have more to tell but i'm still far from getting out my comfort zone.🙃
I love your videos! I was listening to Maria Gadu's 'Amor de indio' and it reminded me of you and the sentiment of videos❤️❤️
"I don't know if that's cringy, that's just kinda how I operate" ....this is SO real! haha
Yep. Great stories are the best!
This genuinely sucks when your phone is your camera, storage, diary, reminders list and all - i hope it was backed up and if so hooray! I had my phone stolen from me in a nightclub bathroom and i was distraught and embarassed, i know how you feel and it will become a thing of the past before you know it! love from london :)
I dont understand how some podcasters dont record it on video... good move.
Bro where did you get your glasses? They look great on you!
I think most everyone has some story like this...total panic at the time, but then later you can laugh about it. Live and learn!
planning a trip to lisben hopefully this summer, any suggestions of where to go
Wow! I always thought the worst possible date would be going out for lobster and coming home with crabs. This sounds even more horrifying! Glad you are okay and recovered from that experience. I loved Portugal and the culture there is not one where you would expect a lot of crime. I guess every basket can have a few bad apples.
What a story!
In 2019 a bike got robbed off me while it was locked up in my old school's bike shed. Getting robbed is awful and It's sad to hear that you experienced that

Never leave your phone or wallet out in the open. Use a backpack, man purse or a travellers wallet belt that is strapped around the waist under your clothing.
Just to make you feel better. I was on a working trip to Paris, circa 2004. I woke up kinda early for my noonish flight back to Rio (yes, I’m a 62 yo Brazilian). 20 years ago, printed airplane tkts were still the norm. Well, since it was early, I decided to take the train to the airport, something I never do. Here I am, distracted, on a loaded RER, on my way to CDG. When I arrived at Roissy, I turned around to get my briefcase. I t was gone. Obviously, an indifferent attendant at the Air France desk told me I had to buy another tkt. I’ve been flying since I was 6 months old, my father was a diplomat. I told her that she was mistaken (an euphemism my superego imposed on me), she could charge me a tariff to reissue the tkt, but had to honor the fare. She begrudgingly and rudely told me I had to go the police station and register that I had been stolen. Surprisingly, the policeman were extremely helpful and mannered. Not something the French police force is known for. After the 45, maybe 50 minute hurdle, I’m back at the desk. The same indifferent attendant looked at the paper, at which point I ask for a copy of the document. She then tells me that she wouldn’t keep it, she just needed to confirm that I went to register that I had been robbed. I can’t express my indignation enough. I didn’t mouth out to her because I was late and didn’t want to delay my boarding. Both of us made the same stupid mistake. We put something of value away from our sight. For both of us it was a matter of distraction. Yours a much better one at that. I was just happy my work went well, I had met great people and learned a lot. You were infatuated by a cute girl. Beats the heck out of my experience.
Sheesh, thank god you remembered how to get back to your friend's place! With my shitty memory I might've just slept on the streets until I could find a way to communicate with my friend the next day, LOL. And yes, us Brazilians are nice people. :)

Hello, what camera did you use to film Moya's video please ?
Don't feel bad, I lived in Lisbon on an exchange program for a semester and so many people I met were rubbed a lot of time there, at least 5 stories of friends whose phones were rubbed and the police weren't helping. Locals advised me to always lock my locker and keep an eye on my belongings because there are frequent robberies. I hope you learned something from the experience🙂

OK--That is a good story. Other than the ending we know-that you did get into the building-did you go the police?did your phone have a tracker on it?was your service provider able to track your phone? how long did it take to resume 'normal' life complete with a phone? was everything on your phone backed up? Also I am really excited to watch /listen to your podcast. When will it start?

I got robbed as well and my phome was stolen in a public bus the day I knew that my brother has cancer. I was so davestated and disconnected with the world. I was not being attention that I left my phone in my bag and it can easily be stolen. I felt stupid, how did I not pay attention to this. I started blaming myself for making my life even worse than it is already. Then I remembered than it's not me who should feel ashamed or blamed, it's the one who steals from people the same day they got really bad news. I was completely distracted and sad, and someone saw this and took advantage of my vulnerability and disconnection with my surroundings and stole my phone. You're not the who's wrong Nathaniel, the one who's wrong is the monster who took a precious thing from you while you're paying attention to something else.

Pensei a mesma coisa, eu encontrando ele e falando: Hey, cara... rsrsrs
I’m still puzzling how she didn’t see what happened …
I was in my first year of uni when at a party I met a guy I fell head over heels with. A couple weeks later over a weekend he spontaneously spends the evening with me at my place and in the morning I walk him to the train station as he needed to get home. I didn't need much so I took this long coat which had 2 large fronts outside pockets and I put my wallet in one of them. On the way back to my place after dropping him off, I took the tram back. I was deep in thought" in love" and daydreaming about our future ( I didn't know but it was the last time I saw him...ha) while daydreaming, I touch my wallet a couple times through the fabric to make sure it was still there. Eventually, when I exited the tram...my wallet was gone... I feel so foolish. I got it back a few weeks later but I had already cancelled all my credits card etc...
If I may suggest *having a back-up* plan in the future
Thank god that everything end up good.
At least you didn’t cry!😂
