My Wild Irish Rose - Full Barbershop song + tag tutorial
Музыка
My Wild Irish Rose is one the most enduring of close harmony songs. It's sure to be sung wherever barbershop harmonizers gather to sing a few of the old classics. My Wild Irish Rose was one of the many popular songs composed and sung by Chauncey Olcott, who was not only a famous songwriter, but also a Broadway actor and singer of the 1900s and 1910s. The chorus of My Wild Irish Rose is part of the classic Barbershop Polecat songbook that most (if not all) barbershop singers know and love. This particular arrangement is part of the Heritage of Harmony songbook, and features a few variations from the Polecat version, but is mostly similar. The tag (ending) of My Wild Irish Rose is in the pure barbershop tradition. Enjoy, and please sing along!

--- LYRICS
You may sing of your roses which, by other names,
Would smell just as sweetly, they say,
But I know that my Rose would never consent
To have that name taken away.
Her glances are shy when e'er I pass by
The bower, where my true love grows;
And my one wish has been that some day I may win
The heart of my wild Irish Rose
My wild Irish Rose,
The sweetest flow'r that grows,
You may search ev'rywhere,
But none can compare with my wild Irish Rose
My wild Irish Rose,
The dearest flow'r that grows,
And some day for my sake,
She may let me take
The bloom from my wild Irish Rose

Thanks. You know, I'm just a regular Baritone. The three lower parts (Lead / Baritone / Bass) fall in my full voice range (low F to high E), the Tenor is mostly sung in head voice. Good thing the melody in barbershop isn't sung by the top part, haha! :)
What a delightful way to start a day!
Hey Julien, this is great! I loved all of the historical information about the song, and I especially love that you broke down the different parts! I’ve never been able to harmonize with anyone because I can’t focus on my own part. The fact that you can is awesome, and that you’re willing to explain it is even awesome-er... if that’s even a word. Thank You again for sharing your gift with us - it is always delightful to hear you sing!!!

Man, these videos have made me miss when I was more actively a singer, doubly so the tag tutorial! Either way, great work as usual, love the little notes about the ins and outs of the tune as you go!
My word ...how perfect
Your vocals always make me smile, Julien. I especially like the bass. I always told my husband, who had a fantastic voice, that the bass singer always gets the girl!

Yes, just the chorus from the Polecat songbook. This is a different arrangement + it has a verse.

Wait, uhm do you think he can just whip up a video overnight? I would expect it would take a good week or longer depending on what's going on his life. I see he takes tips, maybe a gratuity would help? After all you are making a special request and it cost money and time to make videos.

I'd argue that many folks who sing the tune don't pay attention to the words.
I may be an outlier, but I prefer a more metronomic presentation of these songs. Also, this is one of your better songs with regard to vibrato. The less the better methinks. Can you discuss these?
@JulienNeel
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! My two cents on the above: - I think such a song in 3:4 with rather cheesy lyrics, needs some rubato for storytelling and for musical interest more generally, like emphasizing certain climactic moments. I was otherwise rather metronomic, I think? - Vibrato isn't an ornamental effect, it's a consequence of how I try to sing: supported air flow, balanced air pressures above / below the vocal folds, minimizing unnecessary tensions, etc.). The classical singing approach enables me to project my voice and give it a fuller and relaxed tone than over-pressure singing (which gives you a straight but tenser tone that won't carry as well). Hope my response doesn't sound too pompous! I'm just singing by instinct, I'm mostly self-taught.

I like vibrato, it's too bad it's fallen out of fashion. You kind of insulted him and you want him to discus this with you? Like my grandma used to say, "I'd hate to have that nerve in a tooth."
