    @@Nassit-Gnuoy I think Horikoshi should've just killed Spinner instead of Magne. Not because Magne has any more potential story-wise, but just do to the sheer interesting fight choreography you can do with Magne's quirk. There's only so much you could do with dime-store Stain.

I did saw villains who got fantastic development/progression or even entire arcs focused on them. But never a villain whose whole story is told pretty much from point 0.

He was unsure of what his goal would be and was playing the villain all wrong, used people, learned from them, started acting smarter with his gang and with his own motives, fought hard to awaken his quirk and now has a deadly arsenal at his disposal.

    The funny thing about Horikoshi with Dabi is just, that he reveals literally every detail about Dabi except the intresting ones like his actual name, his quicks name or his origins. The only stuff we get are that he gets carsick (from spinner driving), hates fish and that his quirk damages his skin (which is painfully obvious) I would really hate it if he was the LAST of the members who gets his story revealed Edit: I was a fool

    Perhaps you missed it but during the Toga quirk evolution Toga responds to Curious saying it was fear of death and says “That’s not it. I just want to love more.” So the story flat out says it wasn’t fear of death that awakened it. Literally panels before Toga is about to be hurt by curious she isn’t thinking about dying, she’s thinking about how she wants to be more like the people she loves and be trusted like Ochako is by Deku because she desires love. Then her quirk awakens. So just like twice and shigiraki in that Toga accepts a part of herself which awakens the ability to be more and more like the people she loves, aka using their quirks. A lot of people seem to miss this so I wanted to point it out. Please respond if you agree or disagree :)

    If only there would be different endings for the series - One where the heroes get their happy end, and the other when the villains get them instead. Then, truth be told, I feel kinda sad for Shigaraki. Especially when realizing that his mentor is one of the cause of his descent to madness (since he killed Nana, and Shigaraki's father despised heroes since Nana's death). Wonder what would Nana think if she knew that her grandson would become the new big bad of the society, taught to become one by the one guy who she wanted to stop. also worth mentioning that this actually happens irl. When you are put into a corner or desperate situation your body will literally unlock all the muscle power it has locked away so you don't hurt yourself on a daily basis. IE, lifting entire fucking cars to save a child. Toga underwent this- she truly had a fear of death and truly understood that she could die in that fight- causing her body to go all out in self-preservation, even if it risked self-harm as a result.

  • @mouses_HK
    @mouses_HK4 жыл бұрын

    I think that Togas one was not clumsy at all. I feel like when people are put in a situation where they are scared or in fear they can do some weird shit lol. Toga being scared and having no where to go at all and probably going to die was a great place to put Togas awakening imo. Fear can make people paralyzed while instead Toga managed to save herself.

    Actually she even says to herslef that it's not actually the fear of death but love. She wants to be one more like the peoe she loves which her quirk then literally does by allowing her to use the quirks of the people she uhhh "loves" i guess? What I'm trying to say the desire in this moment to be like Ochako is what's making her able to also use her quirk.

    Excellent video and conveys exactly what I loved about the arc. For me, this was a game changer not just for the series by Shonen Jump. I want more arcs like this in other series. It’s clear that Horikoshi took massive influences from comics. And I want to see that trend continue where mangaka aren’t constrained by their genre. I’m happy this arc has been received well. For I haven’t seen anything like this. And I want more of this in the future.

    My Villain Academia is the ultimate underdog story

  • @tangroro
    @tangroro2 жыл бұрын

    BONES sabotaged Horikoshi's name by ruining his story, the terrible structure, the one-dimensional characters, developments that came out of nowhere, and inconsistent writing, if you're anime only, that's probably how you feel about this arc, and it's insulting cause they turned My Villain Academia into just one long fight, removed all the theme, depth, and symbolism it has. That's why I want to share my analysis for this arc when the manga was out, to show you how much better this arc is meant to be, and like any other great writing, each and every fight in this arc has deeper subtext and meaning. Toga vs Curious: Crurious (キュリオス) in Japanese is the same as Kyrios, a Greek word that could also refer to Kyriotetes, a type of angels called Dominions in English. Curious was symbolic to us, the readers and the audiences, we want to know about Toga's past, her reasoning, her backstory, she asked questions and tried to logicize what made her into a crazy murderer, but to her surprises, Toga doesn't think there's a story to tell, because to her she's also just living a normal life, in fact it's the world that's making her life harder. Her attitude challenges Curious as well as the readers who think maybe she became a villain due to some tragic backstory, but really she doesn't even think she's miserable, and she's not jealous of others, all she wants is a fair world where she can be who she is, to fall in love and be friends with others, like how Uraraka was trusted by Deku. Even the end when Curious was trying to logicize what made her Quirk evolved, Toga just said there's no need to think so deep, she simply wants to be fall in love, and be closer and more alike to those she loves. There's a great scene the anime cut, when she's practically dying from the injuries, she actually felt happy, because she's experiencing fatal injuries like those she loves, so she felt as if she got closer to them, experiencing "a normal life" in some sense. Dabi vs Geten: Geten (外典) in Japanese literally means Apocrypha, biblical books that aren't included in the Hebrew Bible. This fight doesn't seem much on the surface, since Dabi is an enigma himself, you can't have opposing ideologies if one doesn't have one, but all the subtexts are hidden in the details. Geten believes in Social Darwinism, he thinks one's worth is entirely determined by one's Quirk, or as he put it, "There's no value to life other than the strength of one's meta ability." It's the believe that completely oppose the very existence of Dabi, even if you don't know his backstory, you can tell this man is born with an inferior Quirk, he's exactly the type of person that Geten said "has no value in life", it gets even deeper once you learned his backstory, how he's also created by someone who determines one's value by one's Quirk, and Dabi is his failed experiment. Although Dabi stood his ground and never yielded in the anime, but in the manga you can clearly see he's the one losing, he can barely stand straight and his body was smoking, so in some way he still failed to disprove Geten's ideology. Twice vs Skeptic: Skeptic (スケプティック) can be symbolic to atheist, those who challenges religion. The anime cut out most of his scene so it's literally impossible for anime-only to know how extremely neurotic he is, there's a scene where he got triggered by Giran just muttered "video?", he got so pissed because Giran didn't asked in a full sentence question, and went on a half-page rant on why can't Giran just ask a proper question, instead just utter one word as if he's a parrot, but then he still answered Giran because he's a perfectionism. It's a hilarious scene but it also shows what kind of character he is, he only cares about facts and logic, everything has to be just and perfect. That's his downfall in his fight with Twice, he only saw the facts about Twice's trauma, and thought he can exploited it against Twice. In his mind, it's almost logical Twice should be working for them, cause it's the best way to use his Quirk, so he didn't care about how he feels or even viewed him as a human being, that's why when he broke his arms, logically it should stopped him from resisting, but it actually helped Twice confronted his own skepticism, what should've broke him actually made him stronger, and Twice ended up being the MVP who helped defeating the Liberation Army. Spinner vs Trumpet: Trumpet (トランペット) is a reference to Gabriel's Horn, also known as Torricelli's Trumpet, the horn that's used to announce Judgment Day. This fight is my favorite and was the one the anime butchered the most. Spinner was the point-of-view narrator in the manga, this arc is basically his one long character arc, we learned from his backstory that he's oppressed by racism that still exist in current time, and he felt like he's an empty husk, not until Stain's speech lit a fire in his heart, that's why at the beginning he's frustrated and confronted Shigaraki why aren't they doing anything. At the time he's still just a Stain follower who's trapped in the league, but when he heard Shigaraki's conversation with the Doctor, he saw himself in Shigaraki. This fight is basically a character study, it's meta cause even Spinner said unlike Toga who has rich characteristics, who chose to stay in the league by her own decision, he's only a blind follower to Stain who can't make his own decision, he doesn't even has anything he wants or passionate for, but that doesn't mean he isn't a "character". This is a deconstruction of the Evil Minion trope, how the villain was completely defined by who they follow, and Spinner owns it, cause there's nothing inherently wrong about just being a follower to greater men, and it's contrasted to Trumpet, who's Quirk is literally Incite, he's also the person who leads followers, yet Spinner called him out that even he is just another follower to someone even greater. It's a fight between an insignificant minion and a self-righteous "boss" who's just another minion himself. In the end he just changed from Stain's follower to Shigaraki's follower, but his character basically serves as an extension of Shigaraki's character, he wants and fights for what Shigaraki wants, and that's his character. What's genius is that in the upcoming war arc, Spinner who's the weakest and least important member, actually plays the biggest role in that war, his one-note loyalty actually pushed him into the forefront, and that's one of the best payoff of any character ever. Shigaraki vs Redestro: This is the best fight, in my opinion it's as good as Midoriya vs Todoroki, which is why it pissed me off so much the anime ruined it. Redestro is an interesting character, we've seen he's a man with two faces, on the one side he's an easy-going and humorous CEO who genuinely loves his job and those around him, but on the other side, he's a ruthless villain who will kill anyone dares insult their cause, and won't hesitate to send his soldiers to fight in their crusade, even if he feels sad watching them die. As we learn more and more about him, we can see his character is a contradiction, he fights for freedom yet he himself is trapped by his family business, notice how he never once said what "he" wants but only what "Destro" wanted, the moment he's borne he's destined to continue Destro's war. Even his Quirk, Horikoshi is a genius that always integrates characters into their Quirks, Redestro gets stronger the more stressed he is, in some way sense he can only fights if he's in constant suffering, oppressing every ounce of negative emotions inside him so he can fights for liberation. That's what makes his fight with Shigaraki so great, Shigaraki is the pagan god who has no moral, no ideal, no faith, challenged by an elder power, which he answered by destroying the building, dragged him down from his tower of Babel. Redestro insisted that a world with no creation has no future, as someone who's competing with Destro as the new world leader, Shigaraki must have some vision or believes, yet Shigaraki called him out for being restrained by those obligation and expectation, while he embodied what true freedom truly looks like, by doing whatever he wants, without being bound by heavy history, his predecessor's legacy, or any grandiose goal. That simplicity moved Redestro, Shigaraki even literally decayed Redestro's Burden, the materialization of his stress, and that's why he willingly step down and gave Shigaraki the position, in many ways Shigaraki actually saved, or liberated Redestro from his burden. From a writing standpoint, this whole fight is also a deconstruction of "What it means to be a villain", Shigaraki is a pure evil villain who was confronted by a theoretically better villain, who has rich history behind their organization, has a grand and respectable goal, and he's also competent that he won't let emotions get in the way of his plan. Redestro constantly questions what does Shigaraki wants, what kind of goal he has, what kind of future he wants to build, these are all very common questions we ask when we analyze villains in literatures, but what's genius about this fight is that Shigaraki simply answered "All I want is to destroy", even after he remembered his "tragic backstory", he just brushed it off and said it wasn't a tragedy, his "tragic backstory" that's enough to make any great villains means nothing to him, he simply hates this flawed world around him and he'll never be satisfied until everything is destroyed, he couldn't care less how other villains or heroes will rebuild the world from the ashes, because he's not doing it for any great purposes, he has opinions on heroes society, and he does have emotions and feelings, but none of that shaped him as villain. Seriously, watch Overly Sarcastic Productions' Trope Talk on Pure Evil, Shigaraki really is the best character study for pure evil villains

    I also loved this analysis, it was great , for your question, Geten explicitly states Dabi’s body already smelled burned after a few minutes of fighting and the scale of his attacks reduced as the fight went on, by the end Geten leaves him to protect Re Destro and Dabi’s body is full of smoke and he doesn’t even try to catch him, he was nearing his limit

Imagine a hero with Toga's quirks. sure there's Monoma, but he is limited by time, Toga Is limited by the amount of blood she has. It makes a lot of sense from a writing perspective why Redestro will surrender, he lost both of his legs, Shigaraki has learned an AOE attack, and Gigantomachia is few feet away from them, at this point M.L.A has 0 chance of winning, continue the fight will only causes more unnecessary sacrifice, so the best move is to swallow their pride and surrender. And don't forget M.L.A's goal was never to destroy LoV, the only reason they challenged them in the first place is because these delinquents who have no power, no history, and no ambition had took the spotlight that's rightfully theirs, but now they see that Shigaraki is the embodiment of what Destro wanted, so Redestro understood that he should be the one inherits Destro's name. Their goal is to create a world where everyone are free to use their Quirks, so it makes no sense for them to fight to the death like Stain, if they really want to achieve their dream, then they shouldn't care about how they're gonna make it. As for why Redestro's Quirk was weaken, I think maybe he never really wanted to be the leader of M.L.A, it's more of an obligation for him to fulfill the family business that has been pass along for generations, usually the stress works to his advantage, but after witnessing Shigaraki's attitude, the purest form of villainy, irresponsible, thoughtless, and childish, I guess deep down he was a bit jealous of him, to be able to do whatever he want without caring any of the consequences, but in a strange way watching this man child laughing maniacally while destroying everything, is very stress relieving and satisfying, that's why his power was weaken.

    I really want an arc (or maybe just a few episodes/pages/ where the students go out and develop/learn basic human things that can help their quirks and whatnot. Stuff like Deku going out to learn martial arts to give him more technical skill with Shoot Style, Yaoyorozu doing _more_ studying, maybe Iida goes with Deku to learn martial arts cause they both do kicks, maybe Bakugo goes and reads up on different types of grenades so he can try to replicate different things with his quirk, etc. I'm just spitting things out on the fly. I got this idea mainly from when it was revealed that Yaoyorozu actually studied up objects and stuff that makes up the objects because of how her quirk works, and as a result it made it so that it didn't feel like an asspull when she could conjure certain things up on the fly. It's really minor but it sometimes ticks me off when somehow a character knows how to do something without any prior knowledge about it. -Like where the fuck did midorya learn to do a spinning axe kick against Bakugou out of nowhere adshrkrbwqieurb-

    Hey your favorite arcs (besides this) are the Pro Hero and the Cultural Festival too? Im really happy to hear that, i personally think that Gentle and La Brava don't get enough credit. And yes this arc is personally in my top 3 too, in almost all the cases the Villains/Antagonists are my favorite part about a fictional story, and seeing an entire part of the Manga focused just on the League was like a dream come true for me. But yes, im also desappointed on the fact that Dabi and Compress didn't get that much of development, but in chapter 240 Horikoshi seems to know (and even joke) about them not getting enough screentime so i think he is planing giving those two more development in the future, maybe involving Hawks in it.

    The way I thought about Toga new ability was that it wasn’t new at all, and that she was always capable of doing it but just not aware how. When she transforms she becomes an almost perfect replica of them, but as she one ordinary person can only have one quirk, there is almost no value for a regular person to learn how other quirks works. Toga loved to observe the people she “loves”, to learn more about them as someone “in love” would do. But in that time of crisis, she transformed into Uraraka but failed to get away. When she was at near death, like a common belief, her life flashed before her eyes and moved on instinct to survive. Those movements were the same Uraraka uses for her quirk, allowing Toga to “unlock” her ability to use the quirks of the people she transforms into. Basically when she transforms into someone, she becomes a copy of them in almost every way. But as she has only ever known how to use her quirk, she never believed her ability could be capable of using other quirks. Similar to how a child with powers needs to learn how to use and control it, she transforms into someone and if she wants to use their quirk, she’d need to know how to use it. If that’s still somewhat confusing, it’s like driving someone else’s car. It may function the same as your own, but because it’s different you don’t know everything about it. But as you continue to observe and use it, you learn how to operate the smaller things. But that can only happen if you continue to use that car, you can’t learn everything about a car if you only use it once.

My major complaints for this arc were I felt it dragged towards the end and I was thinking "can we please move on at some point?" and that there were multiple times when the scene would shift from someone to group shots of the fighting, but nothing was said or done about the fighting. It was as if Horikoshi did it to remind us that everyone else was still fighting, but it got annoying at times. Still, this was a phenomenal arc and is definitely one of my faves too!

    Updated thumbnail, lets goo lmao. Seems like they're restructuring the order of events so MVA comes later but even if it doesn't happen this season, I'm glad they at least showed that shot of Shigiraki 👏 Edit: Thinking about it more and I'd be very surprised if they don't do this arc this season and aren't just hiding it. Endeavor Agency was such a short arc that I'd truly be shocked if they are somehow able to stretch it to be that long.

    Well, now that EA arc is over, we know how they stretch it... With a lot of flashbacks... And a "filler" episode just for the third movie be canon. And next week is the begining of the war arc (with the kurogiri stuff), so what are they gonna do with MVA? Just 4 episodes for it?? The training arc, that is almost have the same quantity of chapters, got 9 episodes, Endeavor arc got 6 episodes, and the Villains only get 4 episodes?? Its kinda unfair and sad... All because that movie...

    @@powaaaah897 From what I understand, since next weeks episode is gonna be the Kurogiri backstory, MVA can at max have 5 episodes, which isn't enough. Even with what I remember of the arc with all of the main plot stuff, 5 didn't seem like enough, but looking back and taking into account the flashbacks and heavy dialogue, I don't really see a way they can do MVA this and not have it be a mess, which is disheartening because they've already spoiled most of it by rearranging EA and MVA and then not hiding the spoilers in EA. I've not really been enjoying this season after Joint Training (too long but I still was able to enjoy it) and it's just kinda sad that the arc I was looking forward to getting adapted to the most has kinda just gotten shafted :/.

    The important take away from My Villain Academia people should be most aware of isn't so much that Shigaraki's arc is structured as the Shonen Protagonist that he is. That's an occurrence more common than most people notice. But rather this is what real storytelling can look like when it's (pun intended) liberated from the constraints of needing to cater to societal expectation. In the same way Togashi was able to tell similar stories about the darker half of what Shonen is capable of with Sensui, Chrollo, and Gyro, what's most impressive is that Horikoshi finally has the amount of clout to pull an arc like this off without being constrained.

    THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE. SACRED WORDS. One of the things that really stuck to me to this day is when i first picked volume 1 one of MHA and saw a comment from an author that had 2 previously cancelled series: "it might seem disrespectful, but I draw with the idea of making a manga that first of all amuses myself." usually when someone fails that amount of times you'd expect them to try to write that wich is the most easy, appealing and popular for the fans (aka shonen bullcrap) for the sake of satisfying the fans, but Hori was able to look beyond those constraints and try to write something better, he may not be a Togashi, but i really respect him and value him as a great author, especially after this arc.

    @@DAMUSHIRA369 I feel there's alot of untapped talent in Shonen authors in particular that's constrainted when you look at the series that are still continuing vs the ones that get cancelled. I've noticed there's quite a few series that try to start out by interesting ideas like these (like Red Sprite or Stealth Symphony) but get the axe. The dynamic between freely exploring you're own ideas and having to write for the broadest possible audience to allow yourself to continue is a frustrating one to be sure.

    as someone who absolutely loves villians and what they have to say about the world they live in, bnha is wonderful in that aspect. the villians of this series are personifications of their societies problems, people who were forsaken and crept through the cracks in society only to rise up again and exact their revenge. they hold up mirrors to the society, showing the flaws in it, but society is not willing to accept what they show. instead they blame it on the villians, because they cannot comprehend how their day to day life can somehow result in a villian. but when the people ignored little tenko as he aimlessly walked the streets, each one of them made a choice. this choice was influenced by hero society, the idea that a hero will save them

    To add to the idea of quirk awakening a lot of people have noted that a possible reason for their quirk awakenings was due to their month long fight with gigantomachia as they were essentially training for a month straight with barely any rest what adds to this idea is that red riot unbreakable is kirishima's awakened quirk and that comes from his intense training during the training camp arc
