My 2020 TRD Sport is all stock tires and suspension, and I get 21-23 mph on average. I'm satisfied with that.

I agree Rob. I have a 2021 TRD Sport 4x4 that is giving me the same mileage in the 21-22 range. I can add to your list of reasons: long straight roads with no real hills like I have in Florida. When I use cruise, it will give me a solid 22.

I'm always driving slow so I can spend more time in my truck, even taking that longer rout just to enjoy the ride a bit longer. As for gas, in town I'm averaging 16-18. The best on highway 22-24. It's always nice to see good gas mileage. I'd love to see 21 mpg all the time! Oh, and thanks for rubbing in 70 degrees! Here in Kansas it's been about 10 degrees, today a high of 20.. that's almost shorts weather here lol! Full disclosure, I did do the math on a full tank in town and highway after a trip, and my true average was 18-19.

20 Deg, Shorts weather ??...we just had a 9 Deg. morning this week out here in Eastern Long Island N.Y. Can't wait for the summer to come back !!!I have a 2019 Tacoma Extended cab 4WD. 6cyl. Up until today I was getting a steady 21-22 MPG for the last 2 yrs. but this morning it went down to 16.to 16.9. Really strange , makes me think the computer is a little wonky. I filled the tank just before this happened and recorded the odometer milage so I will check next fill up to see the real average.

In my off-road 4x4 I get 22-24 on long trips and 14-16 driving local to and from work. Also with you having the pre runner you lose all the weight of the 4x4 drive train like the transfer case, front diff and shafts etc. that could be contributing a lot to it too along with the smaller tires.

2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road 4×4. I was able to get 26mpg at 65mph. I was driving from Arizona to Long Beach California, ( it took forever). It usually averages about 20mpg with combined city and highway driving. But, these numbers are reflected in driving style. Very smooth and slow acceleration. I easily get over 22mpg on my 33 mile commute to work.

My 2017 sr5 vs 4wd I figured out how to get the best fuel economy. Just don't let the engine accelerate past 2000rpms, on take off. Max out freeway rpms at just below 1500. I average 24 to 26 mpg. Never use your brakes if possible. Allow the engine and your speed to wind down naturally, which also keeps the vacuum up. Nobody behind me pays for my fuel or brakes, so they don't get a vote in how I slow down and turn or slow down and stop.

  • @markreams3192

The computer is pretty accurate. 600 miles is enough to break the engine in. Removing the air dam probably didn’t effect it much. I have a 2020 TRD sport 2wd. Interstate driving at 75mph I will get 22 to 25 mpg. I drove 200 miles on the Natchez Trace Parkway with the cruise control set at 55 (limit is 50) and got a little better than 28mpg. There are no stop signs or traffic lights on that highway and commercial vehicles are not allowed. It was an uninterrupted cruise. It’s by far the the best mileage of any v6 vehicle I’ve ever owned. The engine in this truck is a part time Atkinson cycle engine which is controlled by the variable valve timing cam phasers. When power demand is low (light throttle application or freeway cruising) the engine is in Atkinson cycle which leaves the intake valves open for the first part of the compression cycle forcing fuel air mixture back into the intake manifold. This increases fuel economy but robs some power. This is why Tacoma’s have less than exciting throttle response at lighter applications but good fuel economy at cruising speeds. Toyota sells 250,000 of these trucks a year and in order to comply CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) the mileage had to to be improved over gen 2 Tacoma’s, which wasn’t great. By the way the gen 2 power train is still in the Four Runner and is one of the longest lasting and most reliable gas power trains ever built! It gets crappy gas mileage for a v6! I think your sudden increase in mileage is due to engine break in more than anything else. Winter blends of gas tend to be less efficient and I’m sure Texas uses it in spite of climate. We have it in Southern California.

The only true gas mileage I believe you can get is fill the tank drive a distance and then check your mileage by how many gallons you refill it. I do not trust the computer estimate

The computer can calculate it better than you can. It’s doing the exact same formula you’re describing, except in real time. Exact fuel trims exact F/A ratios, exact rpm’s. If you don’t trust it, you might as well not trust your MAF, shift solenoid’s, wheel speed sensors, etc.

I don't know about the SR5, but I just bought a 2023 Tacoma TRD sport a couple of months ago, and I live in North Carolina close to Winston-Salem. North Carolina has gone to crap in the last 30 years, headed down the same path as Californio, so I am moving to the mountains of Tennessee where the laws, rules and regulations are a lot better. In traveling from Winston-Salem to My land close to Morristown on my last trip, I averaged 24 MPG on a stock TRD Sport. I have done some mods to the truck though I have added a cover over the truck bed, a bug deflector to keep bug guts off the windshield and window visors to keep rain out if I crack the windows a bit, but that's it. I am thinking about putting a roof rack on the truck along with a new front bumper, since the Tacoma doesn't really come with what I consider to be a front bumper and a 2-inch lift. Thing is I don't want to do anything that will decrease my gas mileage, I am hoping to find out how much of a decrease in gas mileage those mods make and maybe how to get the gas mileage back.I guess my next mod will be the paddle commander for eco-mode. I wish one of you guys would make a very informative video on this subject, love your videos keep up the good work

Can't complain about the MPG of my 2016 TRD Off Road 4x4 with stock size tires (Cooper AT3 4S). I've never tried a maximum MPG test under best conditions, but driving 150 mile round trips to my cabin in the summer here in Minnesota I've gotten a calculated 24 MPG while driving up to 75 mph on the highway and then several slow miles on dirt roads. And, that is carrying several hundred pounds of gear. My truck has about 67,000 miles on the odometer but I noticed the average MPG increased a bit after I had a transmission flush just prior to 60,000 miles. Of course, winter driving brings the average MPG as low as 17. I'll have to try a summer best conditions drive with a top speed of 60 and see how it does...I'm guessing upper 20's.

I took a trip from my home to a Cabelas and back about 45 miles away. Filled up before I left at the gas station about 200 yards away from my home. When I got back to the house mine was reading over 26mpg. It was mostly interstate driving but I'm easy on the throttle. Going back and forth to work for a week ended up showing 23.8mpg. And I honestly think that might have been underestimated as it said I had around 35 miles left to an empty tank, however, 17 gallons filled it up. While I have noticed some fluctuation in fuel economy in my 2018 Tacoma over the years with the time of year, fuel brand, highway road trip vs rural roads etc, there is only two instances that I noticed a permanent increase. 1) once my free oil changes ran out, I started doing my own oil changes. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic. 2) After I installed the sprint booster. Also, after 20,000 miles, I changed the rear differential lube to full synthetic, (not sure if it made a huge difference). To be fair, despite my list of mods approaching 30, the total added weight I've added is only around 120 pounds. My synopsis is that most people would benefit from full synthetic engine oil and a sprint booster. Note: I'm going to try non ethanol fuel next.

Just keep the highway speed just below 60 mph, or just below 1500rpms. Accelerate all you want up to 2000rpms, not more than that . *Do not* use your brakes; always let it slow down naturally to turn or to stop. Get 25mpg reliably. If you have larger tires, your fuel econometer is inaccurate if you don't have an accurizer on it to account for bigger tires. If you don't have one that accounts for larger tires, your economy is greater than what is listed.

Ugly, yes, works though...BTW two wheel drive is a few hundred pounds lighter that a 4w. That makes a difference. I am considering a sprint booster though, just for options on throttle angle.
