    Really enjoying all the vlogmas training videos! The show vlogs are great, but it would be great to see these kinds of videos mixed into your regular videos too! You do such a great job explaining what you are doing and its great to see what you are working on at home, and then see the results at the shows! I've just returned to eventing after not riding for 6 years, so I'm really enjoying your channel and learning so much! Merry Christmas!!!! 🐎🎅

    I have a horse that is very unbalanced in her canter which causes her to grab the bit and run (but it’s not a bolt if that makes sense) , because she’d rather go fast than balance her self up as it’s hard for her , have you got any advice ?

  • @traceyhewison1185

    @traceyhewison1185

    Hi Adele! As I'm a dressage coach, I thought maybe I could give you a little help? I hope you (and Megan!) don't mind? You hit it on the head, 'as it's hard for her'. This is because she is not strong enough yet. Work on lots of lateral movements, such as leg yield (not a true lateral movement but the very first thing we teach to the horses) and then teach her the shoulder in. This will force her to take the weight on her inside hind leg, thus strengthening her hindquarters, which is what you need for her to begin to carry herself, have more strength and balance in the canter. Lots of circles and serpentines (changing rein and bend), I like spiraling in and out of circles using leg yield. Do these in walk and trot and lots of long and low, be patient, do this for quite some time and in between days go for a hack or do ground work, like lunging and long lining. You will be rewarded in the end for all your hard work! Best of luck to you!

    How do you introduce canter to young horse when ridden? And tips for nappy horse who learn on the bit and pull to the gate

  • @elizabetheventing3827

    @elizabetheventing3827

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thatsmycob i’m not a professional, but introducing canter over a pole for a horse who struggles to get it is always helpful and for a nappy horse (this is going to sound backwards, hear me out) if the horse starts moving sideways to the gate, and it’s to the right, but you’re trying to turn left, open your left hand (only slightly. don’t turn the neck and give them something to lean on) but take back your right hand. so as weird as it sounds, you’re going to put more pressure on the rein in the direction they are going. it pushes that shoulder back over. at the same time you take back your right rein, i’d go ahead and give a few big kicks with the leg in the direction they are trying to go. push the rib cage over. if they’re being particularly stubborn about it, carry a whip and smack the outside shoulder at the same time as taking the rein and giving a kick. also remember that as soon as the horse moves that shoulder and rib cage over you stop kicking and give verbal praise, but continue to guide the horse where you want to go with your outside rein. id also say for a horse that is known to be nappy, do your best not to give them a chance. lots of transitions, serpentines, circles, and most important, forward. if you give them a job and don’t let them drag around, they’re much less likely to. good luck xx

    Long reining, long reining , long reining ! It works a treat! Bed. doing it with a five-year-old who napped towards the gate and put refused to move. Really work on keeping in forwards and distracted and mixing up everything every time you ride. Don’t nag with your legs, everytime you kick use verbal commands. Once your horse is walking forwards, even if it is slow, don’t kick unless they are about to stop. Hands low and wide. Napping is common in young cobs

    Make sure you are riding your pony FORWARD when you do this exercise/stretch, that is very important. They must be pushing from the hindquarters and tracking up....if not, it tends to just get them heavier in the forehand. So big forward first :-)
