My Top 9 Sims: Physics and Vehicle Dynamics

Ойындар

I'm kicking off a new series, taking a look at what are my "Top 9" (Modern) Sim Racing titles! These are taking a look at currently supported Sim Racing titles, and part 1 is taking a look at Physics and Vehicle Dynamics. This will rank the titles in terms of how the cars behave, as well as interact with the track and environment.

Mate you really NEED to redo this video with the updates that have been brought to RaceRoom, you will easily move that up to slot two now. rF2 is also now significantly more "polished" than it was when you released this one. At least you have the right one is the top spot ;)

I'm late to the party here, but I love that you gave PCars 2 some respect. So many people dog this sim and I think that's because their opinions are jaded by PCars 1. iRacing might have more realistic features and options, but I really think PCars 2 does a lot of things very well. Not every car is great, but the ones that are good, are really good. Not to mention that the weather and lighting effects are miles ahead of the rest of the field. I'm excited to see how ACC compares. If they can put everything that was great about AC into a package with the kind of lighting, weather, and track dynamics that PC2 has, I predict it'll be the next big title for the sim racing world.

rFactor 2 all day. Nothing beats it when it comes to physics and ffb. Nothing comes close when it comes to AI. Now waiting for the new UI to make its appearance and optimisation of the new DX11 graphics. Icing on the cake would be the new multiplayer component. Hopefully by then there will be more cars via DLCs.

Jeremiah P me too, I just know through experience that venturing into the waters of "this sim handles better than that sim" is a dangerous game. I don't engage with trolls or hateful commenters any more, but a few months ago I had a" dialogue" with a viewer who said I was an idiot (his word) for not understanding that Project CARS 1 has realistic physics. He wrote waaaay too much for me to believe that it was a troll. Now I try and steer clear of physics/handling/realism comparisons. But yes, SRP has done a great job with this video, I just don't envy his inbox.

Really great video William, opened my eyes up some more to RF2 which I haven't gelled with at all. I've always held AMS in highest regard but actually that maybe down to other factors such as momentary feeling - AMS feels SUPER direct, more than any other title IMO, and driving the Formula cars is still the biggest rush I can get from any race sims. Also agree about iRacing - I always feel slightly detached from the cars. More of these videos please, lots more lists you could do like Race Weekend experience, Weather, Audio, Content availability/Mod community etc... thanks!

The problem with rF2 is the inconsistent and sub-par content from 3rd-party developers. rF2 may have the best tyre/physics model - but if developers don't input the correct data - it means nothing. An example is the EnduRacers Endurance/Flat6 mods. The GT3 mods from APEX, URD, SIMTEK all feel and drive differently.. rF2 is like Android Market - there's so much crap among the good stuff. At least Studio 397 are releasing more stock content, even if it's paid DLC.

Very nice video. I got into rally sim last year and just recently got into tarmac circuit stuff with Project Cars 2 and will be picking up AC Ultimate Edition soon. One thing I've noticed is that the people who shit on PC2 just seem to just make broad, unsubstantiated statements about it being 'bad' or 'arcade', where-as when I've watched comparisons of PC2 with AC where the person has driven the same car on the same track back to back, they've all said that the two feel extremely similar with any differences being very subtle. I don't think I need to say which one I find more credible! Still, it will be interesting to see what I think of the difference between the two. Anyway, I appreciate your honesty with this list in giving your real opinion rather than going in for the elitist circlejerk nonsense. Subscribed.

Hey William, I have always enjoyed Forza and yes I know it is not a true sim but I mainly have gone down the Xbox Line. I just got a G920 wheel with gearshifter and have a Forza 4 Playseat Racing Seat. I used to play a bit of Forza 4 on the Xbox 360 with the Microsoft wheel. I have quite enjoyed Forza 7 but definitely need to tinker with the wheel settings to get the best from it (don't know if you have recommendations for that) but I do want to ask what games you would recommend to get more of a sim racing experience and get more out of the FFB from the G920. I will say Forza 7 on a LG OLED 45 with the XBOX One X is a beautiful sight visually and the dynamic weather and night time racing is beautiful especially when its a nice sunset. I do feel that some cars handle worse than others since I just lose control in a split second depending on the car, I have been learning more about the whole braking to help the balance of the car and other sim racing tips. I usually play on Highly Trained or Expert depnding on the car and usually win but depends on the AI if they want to hold me up all the time, which allows the leader to get too far ahead for me to catch up. But anyways I am looking for something that is a better sim but still looks good. I guess my only options are Assetta Corsa or Project Cars 2. Leaning towards Project Cars 2 since its a newer game and not sure how AC ported to the Console. Any help and tips are appreciated. Keep up the great videos. Thanks

Glad to see you rate pcars2 given all the naysayers. My only gripe with pcars2 is every time I get in new car I have spend time honing the ffb ( I use jackspade and allow time for the auto tuning but once you get the sweet spot its great). I did a silverstone race and the rain started coming in and the puddles started forming. The aquaplaning physics where sublime and I had one of the most immersive/nervous drives ever. I love rFactor2 and just wish you could blend it with pCars :). Just got assetto Corsa in the xmas sale .rFactor 2 for the vintage carsis tops imo. great vid cheers mate.

I have to pretty much agree with the list. For me, it all comes down to how much time I devote to each of these sims. In order, would be: rF2-AMS-AC-PC2-R3E-DirtR-GTR2-F12016-GT Legends. I haven't used Iracing in years. I know, older Simbin titles are not modern, but still hold their own, as well as a few other titles (LFS, RBR, rF1. etc).

2 year old post. But I am here to agree. I was just switching between AC and LFS a while ago. I've always asked myself, how come other games always had to have specific "Drift Cars" and "Grip Cars." In all other games, even if you try your best to tweak the suspension, you can't get a "grip car" to drift. In LFS though, you can tune a specific car, running the same tires, to either grip or drift, using setups similar to IRL. And they will drive similar to IRL too. I used to experiment with setups here before I would implement it with the real cars. From how the LSD/Open/Locked differentials worked, to how cars react to camber different camber settings was close enough to IRL for me than in other sims. The only downside is that it's old. FFB is very basic. But it's good enough. FFB also lacked the "Steering gets lighter when understeering," thing that AC does (in fairness, iRacing also doesn't lighten up when you're understeering). Tires also act like balloons with minimal sidewall thickness (though I think this is the secret to how they make the tire's physics "closer" to IRL). And to add to that, it's not Mod-able, so you're stuck with the cars and the tracks. That's why I go with AC nowadays for the variety and the good enough physics. But if they ever made a modern game handle like LFS, I'd switch to it in a heartbeat.

A little tip for Forza 7 player: turn on the VSC/ESP. There is a lot of criticism about Forza 7 that it is a "game", not a simulator. I think it is underated. The most complained part in Forza 7 is that for some cars, there is no grip at the rear, when you hit the brake and turn in, the rear will step out and there is no way you car save it. It is frustrating and unrealistic of course. But when you turn on the stability control, things are different, it doesn't feels like normal VSC, which will cut the power and pull you back, it feels like it isn't even there. You will still spin if you push too hard, but it feels that the rear have much more grip and you can feel the limit and manage the slide. In a word, turn on the VSC in Forza 7, it will feels more like other sim without VSC, and much more realistic. Many "hard core" sim racer think forza 7 is rubbish because their ego don't let them turning on the VSC for even a mintue, and many of them changed their ideas after they tried the VSC. So if you are a Forza 7 player, you can turn off the ABS, TC but please let the VSC on, you will feel this game is much more than the perfect graphic.

I find iRacing a lot more difficult to drive than Assetto Corsa. It's hard for me to put in more that 5 or 6 clean laps in iRacing, but major mistakes in AC are rare for me. I also noticed it's a lot easier to correct slides/spins in AC whereas once the back end steps out in iRacing there's a good chance I'm going off-track at least. I'm not certain whether this is because my crappy driving is amplified by more realistic physics in iRacing, or whether more accurate physics in AC lead to more consistency and confidence at the limit. Granted, it could be some other reason (maybe I'm pushing too hard trying to be competitive in iRacing, maybe it's something in the FFB) but the difference in my performance between the two sims is really noticeable and it really makes me wonder why...

@9:42 Cars with aero WILL suffer in the slower corners as the aero isn't effective at these speeds, plus aero cars require stiffer suspension setups...stiffer setup= less mechanical grip.

Been waiting for a vid like this. Nice one, man! Onto a question. People seem to be very pleased with the FFB of PCars 2, I think it's okay but not great... now here's the thing, I own a Logitech G27, and I don't know if this FFB quality is specific to that wheel, given that most reviewers use pretty mid to high end wheels. Anyone know anything about this?

So glad to see someone who dosent just suck up to iracing, dont get me wrong i like the concept of the timed races and the active online community, i have put time into it too im b licence, but i dont like the physics, i spin our and loose the car in such weird ways im too busy trying not to spin that i cant focus on improving my times. Project cars im loving cause the physics are there and i can push to get my times down instead of tip toeing round the track. Assetto Corsa i also like but seems like most people run track days or private servers so i dont play it as im all about online. Automobolista is the same as Assetto Corsa and so is race room, cars feel great and r3e has the best sounds out there but the lack of online 24/7 sadly turns me away or i would play them a lot. Rfactor 2 iv not tried but i heard the online is kinda dead too so im not interested which is sad cause it looks really promising. So in the end i come back to Project Cars 2 just so i can get the online and physics. If more sims had the online structure of iracing then iracing wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Thats all just my opinion tho.

Not everyone is cut out for the hardcore racing sims like iracing. Stick to the console-esque pretenders. Your only tip toeing around in iracing because you been playing arcade racing games too long. There's a reason why the pro drivers use it to get ready fir the real thing.

From all those titles to only one I race is iRacing, I love it, I tell to everyone how great it is, would not trade for any other of that list, but that does not make me blind... I love to do endurance races, there is no wear of components in iRacing, you don't need to save brakes, you can go over the same curb por 24hrs, or you can race 500 miles oval races without a minimum drop in oil pressure, you can't stall all those little details are completely missing. Again I love iRacing and would not trade for anything else and I believe that when all those things get done it will be unbeatable, but it is not there yet

Titles that use it include rFactor, Automobilista, GTR 2, GT Legends, Race 07, ARCA Sim Racing, GTR Evolution, RaceRoom Racing Experience, and even more, that I can't recall of the top of my head. rFactor 2 uses what was originally dubbed ISIMotor 2.5, but it may be called something different now

And how many of them have years of real-life race experience, logging hundreds of laps, in all different types of cars, on every major track in the world, and thus, are qualified to speak to what real vehicle dynamics are, and how they are replicated in a video game. Apparently, everyone of them can.

Nicely done. Also a fair result, any ranking on those particular criteria had to have RF2 on top. People can have differing priorities but if physics and car dynamics are #1 then RF2 is the top. I'm sure when you rank based on the strengths of other games the list will re-sort. Small nit pic; maybe sweep up the floor if it's in shot behind you or use a screen. Drink cans and litter look a bit untidy. Keep up the good work. PS watch out for guys in suits with Video cameras, the iRacing fanboys can get a bit LRon Hubbard at times!
