My Three Pillars of Sense-Making

In this video, I explain why I use philosophy, politics, and mysticism to make sense of the world.
What are they and how do they differ?
Why do we need all three?
What's the connection?
It's the approach I use on this channel and in my online courses at MillermanSchool.com. You'll also see it reflected in my Heidegger book and, to a slightly lesser extent, my Dugin book.
What do you think?
Is this a good approach?
What's yours?

It demonstrates the quality of this video that it inspired me to come up with my own personal pillars of "wisdom seeking": 1: Philosophy--the rational inquiry into the basic questions of life. What is Beauty? Do we have free will? What immaterial forces, if any, determine our world? 2: Ethics/politics--taking the answers to those questions and applying them to my own life and the institutions of humanity, so that power dynamics align with those answers. 3: Religion: acquiring direct experience and contact with the divine and supernatural, and letting it guide me. 4: Self-analysis: working through how all of the above, and my own circumstances, are holding me back, and finding ways to resolve those problems.

I've been all over the place in the right wing world the past 12 years now, really starting back in 2012 with the Ron Paul libertarian "revolution" among young people, then later with the rise of Jordan Peterson, and even later with Curt Doolittle. Since the 2020 election I'd put politics aside for a bit to work on myself more out of necessity, and because I had to accept the ongoing decline of the West and focus more on my own life. At some point - I think because of Peterson being on Steve Paikan's show back in the day - I came across your appearance on Paikan and I found your analysis of Dugin and his views absolutely fascinating. Been following you on and off for a couple years, and your recent content has been extremely impressive, Dr. Millerman. Keep up the great work. Can't get enough of these. Learning a lot, and I sense I'm becoming much more well rounded than I've been in the past. You seem like a genuinely good dude! God bless you and your family.

Doolittle only needed a single act to undermine his whole following at Richmond. His paper wasn't readable to a layman, so he lost a few just before that anyway.

It's a reflection on the quality of this video, and the clarity of your thought, that I've come back to visit it for a second time. It makes me think of my own three pillars, and how they have shaped me. They are slightly different from yours, so I though I would share them. 1. MYSTICISM - This one we very much have in common. It has done far, far more for my own sense making than the other two combined, and has given me the greatest benefit, by far. This is a topic I could talk about for days one end, and we really need more quality videos on YT on this subject. 2. PHILOSOPHY-THEOLOGY - While it's common to separate out these two, I cannot, as they have far too much in common, especially in pre-modern times. While one can easily argue that theology should be grouped with mysticism, I would disagree, as theology is more propositional, like philosophy, where as mysticism is far more experiential. And yet, there are profound spiritual truths that have come from the mystics. 3. HISTORY - Especially the history of Western Civilization. The wonderful thing about history, in opposition to the other two pillars, is that it's so very concrete. There are truly hard lessons in history, that can do more to give you wisdom than the entire school of philosophy. This is where you learn the crucial importance of tradition and politics. Thanks again for an outstanding video.

I think linguistics should become a focus of investigative inquiry. We must embrace the plot of the movie Arrival to prevent the great reset and eventually the result of the movie The Matrix. Linear language alone is an inadequate way to organize and disseminate information in a multidimensional world with multidimensional issues. I believe the flower of life is a better nonlinear tool used by ancients to organize information.

Very good video. Very stimulating; thank you. So, the real list of comments is too long. The first three: I guess that when Heidegger asks the question "Why are there essents rather than nothing?" he asks the question that could grasp your loving interest towards the path of mysticism. And he also believes that real poets are expressing their mystical and prophetic experiences. On politics, let's remember that what we are understanding by 'politics' today is power grabbing ideologies (under the pretext of equality, or whatever), and I think that that's not what you are talking about here. Finally, I am sure you know it, Christianity wants to have nothing to do with that 'divine spark' idea and Gnostic projects of self deification. We seem to be proudly heading towards the building of the Babel Tower ('build back better'). Mystical paths goaded by pride will lead the mystic at the bossom of the devil.

I don’t think this is an original thought I had to have heard it somewhere but could one make the claim logic (philosophy) is linear and horizontal while the spiritual (mystics) is the vertical dimension of being? Unlike “the science” I think both dimensions are important in order to complete the human experience so I agree with you 100%. I appreciate what you do. Thanks

Hello Dr. Millerman. I love your channel and insights. I was reading Bloom's preface to Plato's Republic and where he describes Plato as a Poet and Philosopher both into one new creature basically. Would you regard poetry to fit into your Mystic pillar? A lot of people are unsympathetic to the mysticism in Plato's writings, and I believe one of the reasons is in great part due to the translations which have been modernized.

Do you mean to say that liberalism and modernity is still intrinsically linked with Christianity ( or how the Christian religion is practiced as of now)? And that a truly reactionary movement that brings the world into a post modern society based on Dasein instead of the individual would need to transcend Christian categories of thought and Christian categories of organizing society?

  • @AlexanderofMiletus

    @AlexanderofMiletus

    Ай бұрын

@@Daniel_Abraham1099 You are partially correct. I trace many of the issues and ideologies of modernity back to (especially Protestant) Christianity. As an example, the Christian concept that all are the same before God leads modernity to view every person as interchangeable. However, I don't wish to found a post-modern society, rather a pre-modern one. To do this, we must posit a Pagan worldview, rather than a Christian one. Salvation is not achieved through the grace of God, but through the inherent state of perfection one has brought oneself to. The world is not something to be shunned in favor of the divine, but must rather be engaged in and perfected, in accordance with divine purpose/order (Dharma is a good word to use here).

I’m new to all of this dissentient right Philosophy, but it seems to me you’re describing Neo platonism described by the pagan philosophers Plotinus, porphyry, and proculus. When you say bringing oneself to perfection are you describing a Nietzschean will to power? Also I think there are too many objections to the pagan world view, but for a historical one it seems the Christian Neo platonists(Augustine, The Capadocians, St Dionysius the areopagite, Origin, Gregory of Nyssa, etc) won out over the pagans at the end of the day and defined religion politics and philosophy for the majority of relevant European history (from 500 Ad to ww2). Even if Christianity has lost relevance today, it does not seem realistic that paganism will be its successor to deliver humanity from modernity when there is a lot of Christianity ingrained in west’s history before modernity. I’m afraid the Christian issue is much more difficult to overcome than many think.

I am curious to know the nuances of your definition of the Right, because I see what appears to me to be a glaring inconsistency. Does Right Wing not indicate the conviction of Objective Righteous values which come from a rational superhuman source, i.e. God? If so then how can Nietzsche or Heidegger be Right Wing thinkers? They were pretty thorough Atheists and only an irrational move could associate them with truly Right Wing values. If the values are not absolute and from the absolute then they are relative; Like Nietzsche's various Thought experiments and attitude shifts (for example Eternal Recurrence or the Superman). Or we have a Heidegger writing profundities on Being and the ontology of Humanity who also joins the NAZI party, led by a maniac. Plato was Right Wing as was St. Thomas Aquinas and of course the Roman Church. Monarchies were also Right Wing for the most part. Those pillars are what the European colonizers of the U.S. were running from when they enacted an experiment in Liberal self governance. From at least the Enlightenment and the founding of the U.S. the exciting thinkers were the liberal nonconformists and individualists and so it has been up to this day because that is what makes sense to the readers. Let the free market in philosophy prevail. People are not aware of some Right Wing thinkers because the people have dismissed God and Tradition from their identities. They are not in the market for that, but when they choose to they may look more and more into the Right and its thinkers. If your posting of things like Dugin is getting likes then who am I to complain. Regardless of if I agree with him or not, I always learn something or see another perspective. Carry on sir.
