My thoughts on modern day feminism | Dr Ade van Heerden | TEDxGreshamPlace

NOTE FROM TED: Some viewers may find elements of this talk to be distressing or objectionable. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views of mental health and feminism. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Dr Ade van Heerden dived into an interesting topic of "Why modern day feminism is bad for our mental health", addressing amongst other topics, phenomenons such as women empowerment and how they affect a typical woman's psych Best known as former Miss South Africa 2017, Ade van Heerden is also a medical doctor who had her internship at a Military Hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town. Despite the glamour, she believes that medicine is her calling and her impact on lives has been through that platform.
At the Miss South Africa 2017 pageant competition, she emerged as the first princess, stepping in as Miss SA when Demi-Leigh Nel-Pieters left the position when she was crowned Miss Universe. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

There's your TEDx "disclaimer" suitably explained. It's an open apology for the gaping disconnect some women have between what they think and how they're actually perceived......only this apology's actually being given TO these women (by TEDx)...for allowing this unsavoury disconnect to be pointed out on their platform because they know it'll attract feminine "heat."

    Of course outcome shouldn't be given on a plate, but outcome absolutely matters. If women, men or any group are getting a worse outcome then it needs to be adressed. For example, male suicide rates are a lot higher, despite men and women having equal rights and access to psychological/psychiatric help ( and DESPITE the fact women's troubles tend to be dismissed as irrational, overall health not taken seriously, look it up). Nevertheless, isn't men's outcome concering? Similar to women having worse outcomes in other areas.

    You are speaking propaganda. Women don't need children to be happy. Of course I respect everyone's choice and I understand why parenthood is meaning of life to many people, but you are dead wrong if you say women NEED to sacrifice their carees, hobbies and everything that previously made them happy for children because it's what they are SUPPOSED to do. If a woman has kids its fine. If a woman doesn't have kids its also fine. Both choices are VALID. And some women are legitimately miserable being mothers and were never meant to be mother, but found out when it was too late. Women need to be informed of the decision theyre making, the risks of pregnancy, childbirth, post partum depression, sacrificing your life for another life.

    Something seems a bit odd about the facts that women have earned more Bachelor's degrees than men for 30 years and yet occupy only 7% of top management positions. Can lack of ambition explain this huge discrepancy? Or perhaps the discrepancy is a sign that the deck is severely stacked against women, and they are responding to this by getting degrees in greater numbers.

If they want, they can rise in the ranks. If they embrace victimhood, they always have an excuse. Excuses get you nowhere. After I had my kids, work wasn't as important. Exactly. It was an incredibly weak and biased presentation that instantly reeked of religious brainwashing for me. Sure enough when I googled her ‘raised in a Christian household’ pops up. I knew before it ended. It’s almost like it was done at the request of her pastor it was so bad. It didn’t speak about feminism at all.

    The simple fact that more boys are born than girls, yet in the West, by the age of 40, there are more women than men. Why? Because men are much more likely to die from crime or suicide or accidents on building sights, or as police, firefighters and men in the armed forces. Girls are better educated because we have gone from 60% female teachers in 1974 to 96% female teachers in 2019. Education has been feminized, with the lack of male teachers and lack of fathers involvement in their kids, young boys are adrift.

    I think the issue when talking about gender-based violence, from both feminists and non-feminists, is how we frame it. Globally, and in many countries, there are more male victims of violence, but who is committing it all and what are the circumstances? Men are more likely to get into violent altercations as a result of pressures to embrace toxic masculinity. Women are also more likely to experience domestic violence, again as a result of toxic masculinity. So yes, women are not super-victims, but gender politics and feminism are still relevant.

  • @fresh_hell
    @fresh_hell Жыл бұрын

    Several issues of logic and content here. 1) Many times more women die from domestic violence than men in the world. This is an indisputable statistical fact. Does this mean feminists go around calling all women -in general -victims? No. 2) One of the pillars of feminism is that women are overly sexualized and objectified. This lecture confuses a cultural issue or the influence of Hollywood for feminism. Uneducated Hollywood celebrities and behavioural trends in young women are obviously no source for what is modern feminism. Are there problems with modern feminism? Yes. But this talk did a bad job of addressing them.

    TEDx talks, you should be ashamed of yourself for furthering the victim-hood and weakened image of women with that asinine disclaimer. You've unwittingly made the presenter's point entirely. Things like that disclaimer, and the presumptive reasoning that goes with it, are the problem. You, Ted Talks, have become part of the problem.
