As a general PSA, you can't trust that bottom battery buffer on an "older" battery. The older the battery the further away from a 0% state of charge you want to be to avoid unexpected problems...

As a point of reference it is probably equivalent to running ICE car with a blown radiator. The amount of damage to the battery is probably similar to few years of normal use. Don't do this folks. Especially in the cold weather. Just stop at 2-3% and call a tow truck.

By 1st principle, a car's powertrain should be designed to not be damaged/degraded when used within it's specs. That would be from 100 to 0%. (E.g. RPM redline on an ICE.) If going to 0% really degrades the battery then it should have a built-in unusable buffer.

Tesla Range estimate is always underestimated, never rely on what it tells you. Always estimate lower to be on the safe side. Range anxiety is real. Tesla capitalizes on supercharging, look at normal hour pricing. They want to discourage people from driving in the early hours but that is when charging prices are at the lowest.

Got ~20 mi out of my old MS when it hit -0% outside Pittsburgh a couple years ago. Got to a SC, and the car’s DC/AC transformer failed. The Road Service agent stayed on the phone with me. Everything turned off, coasting down hills, very moderate speed up a few hills to get to the nearest destination charger. VERY anxiety provoking.

In actuality there are so many Superchargers and 3rd party chargers these days that there is no reason anyone should be running out of charge. You just have to be aware, if not then there is no one to blame except yourself since the Tesla will give you a warning. No different than running out of gas. For real insurance you can also carry around a CCS1 adapter if you drive a Tesla or a can of gas if you drive an ICE, but does anyone do that?

It’s actually not bad to let the battery go to 0%, because the battery has a buffer to protect itself. It’s way worse to keep the battery higher than 55% for battery health. But it’s probably better to assume you only have 5 miles left at 0%.

When ur Tesla dies is is really scary. DH’’s Y was only a few months old and he’s never let the charge drop below 30%. Car had complete failure after a very strange battery warning while parked in garage. Had to call Tesla road side assistance and they sent tow truck out within 30 min. Took the tow truck driver a good 20 min to be able to jump the car, open the drunk to get to 12 V battery and get the car open and that was just to be able to get the car in neutral. We thought the car might have been a lemon- turns out rodents had gotten into our garage and chewed up the wiring 😫. My 2019 model 3 has never had this issue and was parked in the driveway.
