As strange as it may sound, a 13 year old was included in my top 10 just over 3 years ago. Yes, she is still learning her trade, but her abilities at such a young age mean I can easily enjoy her performances as much as i do some of the artists you mentioned in your top 10. Her name is Angelina Jordan.

Joni Mitchell is an incredible singer, composer, lyricist and songwriter, but one of my favorite most understated moments from her as a vocalist is when she’s singing backup vocals harmonizing with James Taylor on Carole King’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”. She just has the perfect subtle touch on, and she’s just playing a supporting role on that song. That’s not even mentioning her amazing vocals throughout her own body of work.

Although many fans consider Angelina Jordan is one of the greatest singers ever, I will be more conservative and say she is on her way to become one of the greatest ever and the scary thing is that she just turned 17 years old yesterday. Art is very subjective and the singers that you featured are your personal favourites and I appreciate that you didn’t rank them as the best. Although Angelina is primarily a Jazz singer, she also excels in so many other genres. Listen to these songs and you might understand why many people put her in the same class as the greatest. Hi, Andy! Greeting from New Zealand. Have just discovered your KZread Channel and instantly subscribed for more. I was aware of and have watched and listened to all but two of the singers on your list - Chaka Khan and Eryka Badu. I will search them out and have a listen. I don't know how you feel about child singers (i.e. those less than 16 years of age) but many of those commenting have mentioned Angelina Jordan, the young Norwegian singer whose roots are firmly in jazz/blues, although she can sing most genres. She has covered Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, Shirley Bassey, and Whitney Houston, among others. She burst on to the scene in Norway's Got Talent 2014, at the age of 7, singing Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday "and followed that up with her "I'm a fool to want you" (A cappella performance),and then Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang". Her final .performance was of George Gershwin's "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, sung in the style of Ella Fitzgerald. She won the contest with 46.0% of the vote. She has continued singing and has toured the world performing at charity concerts to raise money for disadvantage children. One of her more recent performances is of the jazz classic "My Funny Valentine". In the view of many, this is now the Gold standard for the song. In anticipation that you may wish to listen to it, here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4h7rsSsd6eneZM.html. She celebrated her 17th birthday on 10 Jan 2023, just a few days ago. In Aug 2020 she signed a contract with Republic Records with an agreement that there would be no promotion until she finished High School.

Hi Andy, Thanks for the video. I really appreciated your discussion of all of your choices. So many of these sorts of things are simply lists with some banal mumblings about the fact that the choices are great. You painted a backdrop for each and weaved all into a well-connected tapestry. You've got a great command of music history and your off-the-cuff narrative here was like a scripted documentary. My hat is off to you, sir. I'll be checking out more of your content. I see there is a bit of a pile on regarding Angelina Jordan here. I'd be willing to bet you know exactly who she is and exactly how good she is. If she is new to you however, I have a suggestion for you to check out. You mentioned that Ella Fitzgerald may be your favorite female singer. Angelina sang "Every time we say goodbye" for a rooftop performance on a TV morning show in Norway back in 2016. She was 10 at the time. Hope you enjoy!

What a great story about Aretha, I am going to be steering conversations in directions that allow me to repeat it. You're spot on about Joni's voice. My wife truly cannot stand to hear her sing, and it is that folkiness. I'm (wrongly, I do know) kind of...maybe...with her? That folk thing, it's hard to hear the music for all the cultural baggage somehow. Truly great singers like Maddy Prior and Sandy Denny, it's like wow, amazing, truly beautiful...and that's enough, thanks. Oh, and one more thing. NIna Hagen. Cosma Shiva! Nobody influenced pop singing more than Laura Nyro with her Billie Holiday phrasing combined with wide intervals, pushing her mezzo-soprano range to the limit, dynamics, scalar runs, emotion and general wild experimentation. She also had one of the most beautiful voices, and her covers were incredible, such as her version of Up on The Roof by Carole King/Goffin.

Great list and great descriptions of their places in music history. Ten brilliant artists, there's no denying that. I have to admit, I was afraid you might not include Björk. I should never have doubted you.

My Tops: Billie Holiday, Nana Caymmi, Betty Carter, Rosa Passos, Ella Fritzgerald, Maria Bethania, Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell, Elis Regina, Karen Krogg, Gal Costa, Sidsel Endressen, Maria Gadu, Kate Bush, Erykah Badu, Gretchen Parlato, Aline da Lima etc... and I like Trilok Gurtu's mother's voice. Also I think both Lily Allen and Adele are better singers than bjork

Hi Anthony, Hard to argue with any of those choices, especially Bjork and Bessie Smith. Bessie might have been the most powerful singer of the 20th century. And Bjork is utterly unique. No one remotely sounds like her. These are my ten (also unranked) : Sandy Denny Bjork Billie Holiday Bessie Smith Joni Mitchell Anita Baker Janis Joplin Aretha Franklin Patsy Cline PJ Harvey And with all that said, you ever think of doing a list of favorite punk or post-punk bands? I'd be interested to know.

There was once a little girl who stole *Chain of Fools* from Aretha Franklin, so now it's hers by right of unlawful expropriation. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKxqrsp7ptKefdY.html It's not fair, I suppose, but Aretha still has a whole lot of other songs she still owns.

This breaks have to pumped on this Angelina Jordan discussion as one of the greatest vocalists. Surely, she has a lovely voice. Nice tones and has obviously been trained, instructed well. But she has no life experience. She is a wonderfully sounding parrot. It's a bit soon to start comparing her to Billie Holiday or Screaming Jay Hawkins. How could she hope to have the same feel?

I totally disagree. Angelina produced what I think is the best rendition of “I put a spell on you” at 9 years old, don’t sell her short , musicians who worked with Ella Fitzgerald , Sinatra, Streisand, Eurythmics and Etta James were members of the band in her Christmas special in 2021 when she was 15, all said she was the best they had ever played for, all were multiply Grammy winners, Gregg Field 9 Grammys, Chuck Berghofer played with Sinatra and Streisand for 6 years, Shelly Berg Grammy nominated 5 times, Jimmy Z played for Rod Stewart and Etta James, Rob Christi 2 Grammys and artistic director of Republic Records and Universal studios, Quincy Jones had her open at O2 area a for his 85th birthday…. she is absolutely no “Parrot”.
