Me, too. They remind me of something my grandmother taught me to make as a child. We would melt suet into molds and mix in seeds, or coat large pinecones with softened suet and roll them in seeds. The fat gets very firm but not rock-hard in the cold, and it’s extra calories/energy for the little animals.

I am named Maria as well. I live in the US in Topeka, KS. I LOVE you and your vlogs so much. Swedish traditions are simple,, heartfelt and beautiful. I love the window decoration idea! Simply gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your life with us...especially those of us in the US. Our country is so focused on ourselves and our self importance, it is nice to see how other countries live such better lives, because their focus is on living a good life without all the “things” Americans feel are important. If it weren’t so cold there, I would love to live in Sweden. Perhaps it’s because my ancestors came from Switzerland and part of them lives in me. 😉

When you’ve lived in different countries as I have, you’ll find that in each one, the citizens are all focused on themselves. That should not surprise you. Don’t get caught up any more in the whole Self hatred crap that some espouse. I was lucky enough to not just visit other countries but to also go to their schools in elementary school, so I got a greater sense of how people really, truly feel about themselves, their country and other countries. And guess what? They all think that their country is the greatest. And they’re not embarrassed about it, nor should they. I think every citizen of every country should think that way about themselves. Also, don’t buy into the notion that everyone hates America and Americans. They’re not fixated on us, but when asked, they might mimic some opinion but mostly they’re fine with us. And many Europeans rightly remember that were it not for huge amounts of money and many, many lives devoted and sometimes lost in both World War I and World War II, without us they might be speaking German now. Many want us to continue to prosper if not for any reason other than outside their own country and surrounding neighbors, American is one of if not their biggest single market for their products. And they are happy to enjoy many American inventions (like the Internet, and KZread, lol).

My mother’s family came from Sweden. Every year she clipped a candle holder to outside branches of our tree. After the tree was decorated we would turn off all the lights and she would light the candles. One by one they would start to illuminate the ornaments. She had 15 or 20 candles and my father would hold his breath until she put them out. It was beautiful and we all waited for the night she did that. God jul

Maria, I love your twinkly candlelight. You must buy your candles in bulk! 🕯 By local standards my outdoor decorations are very simple but I like them. I use solar lights and they are a very soft light. I have a small tree, a little one piece nativity, a lantern, and a basket of pinecones on my front porch and a wreath above them. Our small town really decorates big for Christmas (which I love) but my simple decor looks a little subdued. I do have stars in my front windows as well.

This reminds me a lot of traditional German decorations. A lot of people have the stars hanging and traditional wood carvings which are beautiful little pieces of art. In the last few year I also started to see the paper stars hanging in the windows in the USA. I’m almost certain people got them from IKEA because I saw them hanging in there. But you know this is a pleasant change because in here it is like brighter, more glitter, extra color, blinking and flickering extra decorations to the point you can’t even see anything anymore

I watched your Christmas tradition videos at the start of November. I fell in love with your paper stars. As we were visiting the UK at the end of November, I begged to go to IKEA to try to find one. It's now hanging in my large front window. The family kept trying to persuade me to buy the small star, but my heart was set on the big lacy one. It looks absolutely fantastic! On the fireplace, there's a family of tomtar. There's also candles burning, the fire is aglow, and despite the dark, it's so warm and cosy inside.

I love your videos, Maria... thank you! We are seeing more of the big star lights in the USA because of the IKEA influence. I have a large star, now, myself & I love its glowing light. When I was a child, in the USA, many decades ago, families would just put up multi-color, warm glowing lights along the eaves/edges of their house roof & often display a multi-colored lit up Christmas tree in a big window at the front of their house. Back then, nobody used all white lights. The excesses of overdone Christmas decorations began in the 1980’s. I still prefer the simple displays. As you said in one of your Advent videos, it reminds me of my childhood traditions & means more to me, because of that.

Hey Maria, as much as I can enjoy really packed decorated houses like in the US, I also love your kind of minimalist decoration, it feels so much intimate. To be honest, it's been a few years since I'd like to find 3 scandinavian Xmas decoration I like : the straw goat (don't ask me why, I like it xD ), the star (I saw some at Ikea and I buy stuff from there but, I don't know, I don't want to buy this there as everybody) and the candle carousel (I also would like to find second hand or from a small shop but not some huge online store), that they could be a little more personal, so I continue my search :) P.S. So lovely the image with Doris and Magda on the armchair next to the fire place ^_^

The simple candles and white twinkle lights are my favorite. I chuckled to see the string of lights down the driveway as your husband fitted them onto the fence. Yes, my next door neighbor puts all white twinkle lights around his porch pillars and porch railing. Then he has (electric) candles in each window. It looks so lovely at night and peaceful. The neighbor across the street has a virtual Disneyland going with every light, color and inflatable figure massed in the yard. It's extravagant (can't imagine his electric bill!), exuberant and fun. Definitely not peaceful. :D

In the Philippines, we have a star-shaped decor and Christmas symbol called a Parol which we also hang by the windows and entryways. It looks quite similar to yours except that most of the parols are decorated with various embellishments. There are even contests about it and prizes would go to whoever's Parol looks outrageous and over the top.

Perfect! Simple and clean..this is how I live. It’s just beautiful. I wish we could get those paper snow flakes here in Florida. I put out wooden lighted homes and a beautiful long wooden handmade window light that was made for my father by a German MAN that he and my step mother had exchange hosting there and in our country the USA. I love the dogs... so CUTE!

My grandmother born 1905 first job in NYC around 1920 was making such paper cut outs. You don’t see such paper cutouts anymore in USA, but plastic things manufactured in China instead. 💕 yours as bio friendly so many ways. Beautiful too.

I've never seen those paper stars here in Italy. They're very pretty! We have a different yet deeply ingrained tradition, which is to recreate the scene of Betlehem when Jesus was born. We usually try to recreate a nice village, with many small figures of bakers, farmers, fishmongers etc, and even some electronic stuff like functioning springs of water etc. (Usually it is not very historically accurate, since we even put a lot of fake snow which I don't think really was in Betlehem... but it's christmassy!). God Jul Maria
