Reddit is full of people who fabricate and exaggerate other's behaviors towards them while minimizing their own negative contributions to the situation with which they're involved in order to garner sympathy and affirmation from their audience. Basic social desirability is part of the human condition. Many people don't want even total strangers to hold a negative opinion of them so they will omit key information if it makes their version of the story sound more plausible. There's nothing wrong with asking questions for clarity. Simple minds believe anything they hear... Critical thinkers will smell BS no matter how much perfume is sprayed on it.

That first story... hoo boy, I have words about Dave... Though I am not a father, I can understand his choice for wanting to be a friend first and parent second, at least to a fault. But there's a time and place for that, and he should've been able to switch between the two at appropriate times, i.e. the wedding night. Hell, I'll even go one step further and use the 'friend first, parent second' mentality to make a point. His 'friend' is talking trash to his wife. His 'friend' spoke lies about his wife the night he was going to get married to her. His 'friend' stabbed his wife after numerous threats made to harm her. The fact Dave didn't do a single damn thing to defend his wife from his 'friend' speaks volumes of who he is as a human.

First story: That kid was an awful human being, but he had issues and really needed therapy. I mostly blame the dad. He tried to be his friend rather than a parent. My mum is honestly more laid back and more of a friend to me. But she is ALWAYS a mother. Whenever I do something wrong she tells me and we probably more have a friend situation because we are very close and is a mother and best friend to me. It might be wierd think what you want but It’s great and I’m really lucky. If you want to have that relationship with the kid you always have to have a certain amount of parenting level especially if you’re basically raising him alone. He was neglectful and was barely there. And his “angel” was the false perception of him he saw because he barely knew him and let him do what ever he wanted even when he turned out to be an abusive thug psychopath. This is the worst type of parenting, never raising the kid and let them do what they want and make issues they already have worse to the point they become a psychopath. I just hope people know that

Yeah You're really lucky ngl, since trying to only be the kids friends This happens or you can raise an man who thinks their Entitled to everything and throws a fit when they receive a No for an answer,Try to be Only his Parents can lead to some Extreme cases of parental abuse(Ignoring the kids complains,Severely punish them for every little wrong doing, forbid them from going out because you dont trust their friends,Etc),So you quite lucky that your mother tries her best to be both, since thats probably the best way to go when youre a parent Also i agree with you,Even tho you want to be a Relationship with your kid,You cant just neglect your Obligations as a Parent to discipline your child and trach what they can and cant do(Dont over do it tho, your raising a kid,not a slave),And if most people knew where to draw the line,i think Our society would be much nicer to live on

Y'know at the rate that the Story 1 is going, Avery will meet his ugly end in one way or another while bumping into a lot of trouble in the process if things keep going like that, with no way to help him mentally. He is such an extremely dangerous individual, and the biggest blame falls to his father who just plainly ignore those red flags rather than helping him get the serious theraphy, and just kept OP captive in abusive environment for so long.

I also feel terrible for Diane (psychos mother) because she actually seemed to be quite empathetic towards OP & was likely afraid of her son too. Dad & son are absolute sociopaths & frankly (don't care about the backlash for this) it's really ok the psycho offed himself. One less dangerous monster in the world. His Dad deserves the pain for it, but not his poor sweet mother who seemed to be stuck in the cross fire of the chaos. At least OP knows she's now safe.

Death threats is a crime, stabbing somebody is attempted murder, stealing a cat and purposely having it put down is theft AND animal abuse, then breaking into someone house and trying to steal their gun is breaking an entering and also attempted theft. If Avery is 19 and did all this, he can get charged as an adult. And for all this, I am surprised he didn't get at the LEAST 50 years prison time. But yeah, he is definitely in hell right now.

The whole part with the cat shouldve told the OP to get out of there right then, especially if Dave did nothing about it. This is a big reason why parents need to be parents first and not "friends" to their kids. Story 2: Kind of gave up on a good thing there, and didn't realize it until it was gone.....dont know if he's a jerk or not, but rather dumb. Story 3: I dont think OP or Jane are jerks, but both couldve been better overall. OP shouldn't have said that, and Jane didn't need that kind of re-action overall.
