I'm testing a waterfall release strategy for all of 2022, and it all begins with my first release of the year: "Dark: To The Wolves".
I dropped this first release of 2022 on Friday, January 21st, and, as always, I used Facebook ads to promote it.
So let's break down the results of this release and pick through every detail of how I set it up, how much I spent, and what I plan to do next time.
This is my Spotify Release strategy for "Dark: To The Wolves".

    Great content as always Tom. I have 2 questions : how do you re-release a song keeping the old datas and stream in it ? is it by re-uploading it through your distributor using the same ISRC and that’s all ? Also I’m not sure of your definition of what is the best performing ad, is it the cheapest or the one that gained the most result even if it’s more expensive ? Thanks a lot for what you are doing !

    Hi Tom. Love your content! Question: If the goal was to grow Spotify followers vs streams do you think it’s better to still deep link to a song (that auto plays on Spotify) or the artist profile where the follow button is more visible. Have you tested this?

  • @tomdupreeiii

    Great question! Yes, you've got it right, and that's exactly what I do and teach. If you're trying to grow your followers, that's what I refer to as a Spotify Growth campaign, and that's where you'll send traffic directly to your profile so they can listen and follow in the same experience. If you want to get streams, that's what I refer to as a Spotify Release campaign, and that's where you send traffic directly to the song to get as many streams as possible in a short window of time.

    Hey Tom! When you move ads to new ad sets / campaign, does it re enter learning phase?

  • @tomdupreeiii

    @tomdupreeiii

    Yes. Every time I create a new ad set, that new ad set will have to go through the learning phase again. But it goes more quickly when I know I've got a winning setup.

    my difficulty for me at the moment for my genre it that it has most listeners in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore but the ads does not convert well because i think most of the users are using the free version of Spotify. When they try to convert, the spotify will play a different song since they are on free version. when i tried to add youtube link of the music in the landing page, you can see it is working. So at the moment, i pitched my songs to the local malaysia, singapore, indonesian owner of the playlist with huge audience and manage to get now popularity index at high as 27 now, but during first week it was about 18 and 19 so no discover weekly exposure. it only happened the following week when the popularity score reached about 22/24. but the release rasar bump is very small, i think because the save rate is very low since it is mostly discovered and listened in these curated populat playlist. what’s your take on this @tom

    Hey Tom - Tommy here. Great video, once again. Curious: is there any difference between releasing music 'waterfall-style' as you explained in a previous video VS releasing a single and adding it first in a playlist with the whole discography? In both cases, another song of yours will be automatically streamed (hence people don't get transferred to another artist), but in the 'playlist' approach you can 'feed them' your whole discography, while in the 'waterfall' approach just a few more songs. Thanks again for everything you do for the indie community - much respect!

    Great question. I think there are some subtle differences in how you can take advantage of the data and Spotify's algorithm, but I do believe both approaches have the same sort of compounding benefit in many ways. I'll know more as the year progresses with this strategy, but, as of now, my guess is the waterfall strategy could potentially lead to more of an algorithmic compounding effect than the playlist strategy might. But that's just a hunch at this point.

    @@tomdupreeiii thanks man. I'll be launching some experiments as well and it would be interesting to compare results. The playlist approach is also less labour intensive for those who are afraid how the waterfall approach works with the distributors. Also, as far as I'm aware, some distributors don't allow unlimited uploads within a yearly fee, like DistroKid does, so the costs could add up with the waterfall approach. Anyway, looking forward to your next videos, you're my go-to channel.

    the big advantage with playlists is that you get people to like the playlist. Then they listen to your playlists every now and then and you can decide which songs they listen to. I think playlists are really powerful in that sense. Often people forget about you when they just like 2-3 songs. But with playlists you can feed them with your music all the time ;)

    Hi Tom I hope you are doing well, I love your content, always informative and useful. I have a really hard time setting my ads so that it can be seen in the U.S, I think is because I failed the iOS 14 thing, could you help me on that ? Thank you in advance

    Hi, thank you! If you want to prioritize the US, you can try first utilizing a traffic campaign that only targets that single country. You can also watch this video if you haven't, which might help too: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKads8tpirqop9Y.html.

    View content figure is higher than the link click / landing page view figure - any ideas why that is? Noticed this on my own ads too.

    I've noticed this too. I think it has something to do with how Facebook's conversion tracking is working now. Something changed, and now multiple button clicks on the same page can trigger multiple conversions per landing page view. I'm hoping they'll fix it soon.

    Hey Tom! The one thing I wasn’t able to see was whether you used DTE on any of these ad sets at all? Is that something you’ve been liking for cold or lookalike targeting as of late?

  • @tomdupreeiii

    @tomdupreeiii

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question. DTE is on by default with conversion campaigns now, so I'm unable to turn it off even if I wanted to. You can still control it with traffic campaigns though. So for the campaigns you see in this video, DTE is automatically on for all of them.
