At this end of the day all you can do is do your best, give them love and security as children, and teach them how to make their own decisions and be self sufficient. She thinks she failed because she raised children that don't hold the exact same value systems her, but that's literally how she succeeded. She raised children into adults that grew their own value system. Rather than always believing what they're told, they forged their own path. Just because it's something she doesn't agree with doesn't mean she failed. And it also doesn't mean that that topic has to be the only thing talked about at the dinner table.

This sounds pretty common and normal to me. What is a parents job? To make sure they do everything right for their kids and to make sure they grow up to be the best version of themselves, etc. So when a child starts getting into terrible things, parents can be tempted to feel guilty, that it was their fault, that they didnt do their best or enough to help their kids, because all of this hurts them... so normal i can imagine, i dont even have to be a parent to see that ​@kwalters3557

Oprah puts some people down.

I needed to here this. My 2 children are making moral choices different then me. Hope she sees this.

My adult son made the decision to participate in a lifestyle choice that I have chosen not to be involved in. He came home from Oregon a few years ago to visit and we had a deep conversation about his decisions. He wanted me to know, and I believe he was hoping that I would understand. It was hard to hear but I appreciate that he told me his truth. Internally I struggled with this info. for some time, but I finally made peace with his choice. I came to realize that this is his decision and my job now that he is an adult is to support him and not to judge him. I met his paramours and they are actually really nice women and they take good care of him and they love him and he loves them. In the end, this is what I want for my son. He is hurting no one, everyone involved wants to be involved. He does not tell me how to live my life and I made the conscious decision not to tell him how to live his life. He is a good, solid, hard working and productive man. I will focus on that and my love for him and his love for me. He was very relieved once he knew I knew. He wanted to be able to be open and real with me about his lifestyle. I made the choice to give him that.

It's calls like this one on the Dr. D Show that make me want to go back to school to be a therapist. I want to sit with people in the tough situations when they have no idea what to do and tell them, "Hey, you didn't fail. You're a good mom." And then figure out next steps from there

I have done far worse and I had the best father in the world. He definitely didn't fail. As I get older, I didn't fail either, I just made some stupid choices.

Try not to judge too harshly. Just be there for them in case this implodes in which case they will need a soft place to land and not “I told you so”.

Been going through this crap and this has been extremely helpful.

I understand where Carol is coming from, as a mom with Teens, I take all of my kids "failures" very personal....it's SO HARD not to.

This sucks. I feel bad for her. As a single mom her son should do better in terms of honoring her instead of making her feel ashamed.

I would feel like a failure too. And it's more than "they're making decisions you don't like." But all children have to make their own choices at some point and sometimes the devil just gets the stronghold. Rebuke their behavior and pray for them

She's being forced to confront her own shame about her body and sexuality and is projecting that onto her children. They are not ashamed of their bodies or sexuality, but she definitely is. It's a great example of how each generation triggers the previous generation, allowing healing to occur.

@punkrocksmidge When you look at the data on p0rn actresses, it is much more likely the daughter-in-law has unhealed sexual shame. Maybe the caller does too, but someone who has an issue with their family member doing p0rn doesn't automatically have shame around bodies and sexuality. It's a great example of how you can't stop your loved ones from making self destructive choices.

Definitely two sides to this story rather than being the victim. Most telling was feeling the need the she was going to have to go tell everyone information she's didn't like. So your kid grew up and doing something you don't agree with. Nothing unusual. I do wonder why she was even told though. Lot more going on here.

@@thelogicaldanger That's quite likely true. She definitely comes across as the medling type. And now wants to go tell everyone. Mom doesn't get that's just gonna make her look like a fool. They get to do what they want to do as long as it's legal and in this case it is. At least it's a case where the couple is very honest with each and seem to have agreed. That matters far more than what mommy thinks for their relationship.

Something missing in this is the part that they choose to tell her. That should be a win, surprise the Dr didn’t talk about that. It must not have being easy for them to do that and she probably did raise him right for him to even bring it up. Not a fan of it and can see it from her perspective. But something worth noting, they didn’t try to hide it from her and she finds out from someone else.

The fact that they felt they could talk to her about this was A) so brave and 1A) a testament to her awesome relationship with them. They’ll need to lean on this fantastic communication openness of hers if and when this decision ever turns bad for them. And they can count on her. Because she doesn’t judge. And they trust that she’ll be there for them. Meanwhile, she can brace herself for her friends’ husbands, friends, and family members who will inevitably see this at some point or might already be the wife’s “fans”. I pray they get and learn whatever they need from this experience. I once saw a woman who had been trafficked through porn going out on the Vegas strip, once converted, talking to women or victims in the life who felf they could open up to her and trust her, because she had been through it.
