I guess it’s still true that one’s actions can shame the family. Her son is causing her shame. It’s a very old idea that is now practically obsolete but it is a real thing. Children who abandon the values their parents taught them actually do bring shame on their parents. Now, do I think she should take responsibility? No. Do I think she should try to get involved, no. But she should condemn the bad behavior and reach out to her son with love. But yes this kid is shaming his mother. It’s silly to pretend that he’s not.

My adult son made the decision to participate in a lifestyle choice that I have chosen not to be involved in. He came home from Oregon a few years ago to visit and we had a deep conversation about his decisions. He wanted me to know, and I believe he was hoping that I would understand. It was hard to hear but I appreciate that he told me his truth. Internally I struggled with this info. for some time, but I finally made peace with his choice. I came to realize that this is his decision and my job now that he is an adult is to support him and not to judge him. I met his paramours and they are actually really nice women and they take good care of him and they love him and he loves them. In the end, this is what I want for my son. He is hurting no one, everyone involved wants to be involved. He does not tell me how to live my life and I made the conscious decision not to tell him how to live his life. He is a good, solid, hard working and productive man. I will focus on that and my love for him and his love for me. He was very relieved once he knew I knew. He wanted to be able to be open and real with me about his lifestyle. I made the choice to give him that.

Something missing in this is the part that they choose to tell her. That should be a win, surprise the Dr didn’t talk about that. It must not have being easy for them to do that and she probably did raise him right for him to even bring it up. Not a fan of it and can see it from her perspective. But something worth noting, they didn’t try to hide it from her and she finds out from someone else.

The fact that they felt they could talk to her about this was A) so brave and 1A) a testament to her awesome relationship with them. They’ll need to lean on this fantastic communication openness of hers if and when this decision ever turns bad for them. And they can count on her. Because she doesn’t judge. And they trust that she’ll be there for them. Meanwhile, she can brace herself for her friends’ husbands, friends, and family members who will inevitably see this at some point or might already be the wife’s “fans”. Because with the massive proliferation of porn since the pandemic - like 800x the opportunity there that it already was before that - it’s a sure thing that somebody who knows this mom will or has seen her daughter in law and might mention it or avert their eyes after enjoying their viewing.

I once saw a woman who had been trafficked through porn going out on the Vegas strip, once converted, talking to women or victims in the life who felf they could open up to her and trust her, because she had been through it. She's connect them with resources as a ministry. Her pain became their salvation from it. Meh we live in a new world. She didn’t fail. Her kids aren’t failing. They are just choosing easy money and independence over the 9-to-5 life. As long as they get their money and invest it wisely, hopefully in a more vanilla business, I don’t see the problem. This is just one phase in their life. As for the kids involved, it seems like pretty soon many mothers will have been in the onlyfans game. This world is changing, the stigma in soft-core pornography will disappear. I just hope that people in that industry save and invest. Sex work should be used as a stepping stone to something greater. This isn’t the end for this couple. I’m sure it’s the beginning. This mother is just shocked because the world she grew up in is breaking down. You can be a sex worker and still be a valuable part of the community. Most sex workers now aren’t drug addicts and lost children. They are average people.
