My son Danny: The truth about substance use, stigma and overdose | Petra Schulz | TEDxMacEwanU

Petra Schulz (faculty member, health and community studies at MacEwan University) never planned to be a harm reduction advocate, but her life changed forever on April 30, 2014 when she and her husband discovered their son Danny’s body on the bathroom floor of his apartment. When faced with what to say in his eulogy, they decided to tell the truth. In this heart-wrenching talk, Petra shares Danny’s story and the idea that people who use drugs are just like everyone else: people who deserve a chance to be safe and healthy, and to live without judgment or shame. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you Petra. I am honored to hold space for your beautiful Danny and your family. I promise to be fighting alongside of you until those 5 key domains are adequately addressed. Sending you love and hugs from another mama who understands!

I have traveled your journey myself. My son, Noah died in 2016. Very important information and so much is misunderstood in society and so little progress has been made.

My David, like your Danny, also died of fentanyl poisoning. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m proud of the way you are dealing with it. I hope one day I will be strong enough to stand up and be an advocate for addiction education.

Thank you, Wanda. I am so sorry for your loss. While it is important to get our message out, it is not easy. The TedX format, where you have to remember your entire talk and can't go overtime was a big challenge for my foggy grieving brain. I am glad I did this and hope it helps others.

Unfortunately it’s not being talked about enough still! At least not by the government and law enforcement. They should not only be putting Narcan in every American household mailbox, but they should also be educating everybody about this. With this Covid, which is a pandemic, not an epidemic, they basically forced us to get vaccinated on their dime. If you remember, there was a death counter, and every every single TV in America in the corner they show grewsome pictures of bodies on top of each other and all that terrible scary stuff they did to basically like I said, scare us and make us obey now you know this is not a junkie disease I can tell. I am so sorry for your loss. I am very involved in fentanyl awareness and harm reduction and I am beside myself because I cannot get our superintendent to let us into the schools to educate the kids high schoolers and middle schoolers. Need to have it done in the school where they will come to it. I wouldn’t do it myself, nor would I involve law-enforcement. However, I do have a lot of people around the country that I could just have come and hand it to the superintendent on a silver platter to the superintendent. All I need is access to the school, the gym, and he won’t do it even worse is that our mayor does not even know what Narcan is nor fentanyl. That’s absolutely unacceptable! We as adults have the obligationto at least make these kids aware and educate them because this is not OK I am livid and I’m gonna keep trying, but somebody should have more power. Even the school board didn’t care I won’t stop. This is too bad too rough too serious.😢
