Speaking from the perspective of an ER nurse, we clearly need to do SO much better at this in the US inner cities. The IVDU population continues to suffer from injection related cellulitis and endocarditis.

​@catowarmeowson9964 well people shouldn't poison themselves with a terrible diet and too much sugar and develop diabetes or heart disease. But we still provide them health care with the goal of managing symptoms, issues, medical problems related to their bad life choices...and ideally work with them to learn better health choices. It's no different.

Very clearly presented for those who are not aware of harm reduction. It is a fact that compelling someone to give up and change is not possible although mandatory restrictions would be only short term. Harm reduction is a reverse pyschological process which will benefit the user in the long term even as much as giving up drugs completely in the future.

This is awesome; I commend you for your compassion for people, Lyndsay. You are indeed a Blessing for those in need!

Harm reduction is such an important concept and will continue to save many lives in the future. I think that in order for these preventative measures to work to their fullest extent we as a society need to become aware of our own stigmas on individuals who use drugs. After changing our perspective and hidden stigmas we have surrounding these individuals we can begin to help and save these individuals from many health risks. Do you think that these education courses should be required for healthcare workers, firefighters, police men, EMT, etc. who regularly interact with individuals who use drugs? Thank you for all that you do and for spreading your knowledge on this topic!

Anyone who knows people who use drugs KNOW they will always be the first ones to not only stop & give narcan and CPR, they're the first ones to do help with whatever it is. Even if a person is in need of a shirt, because they'll give you the one on their back!

People who use drugs are also the ones most likely to be in a position to provide narcan and CPR when it is needed. I've carried Narcan for years, but I don't use drugs, don't hang out with people while they use drugs, and have never been called on to use it. The only good I may have done w/ my narcan is when I give it to someone who is still using drugs.

How well has this worked in San Francisco and other places? Has this curbed the crime rate? Are people less likely to rob or steal to support their habits?

Harm reduction only works to keep current drug users alive. It does nothing to address any of the secondary effects that drug use has on a society. In most places where HR has been implemented, drug use has skyrocketed and people are starting at younger ages.

This isn’t failed harm reduction policy. There is a failure of policy protecting people from homelessness and supporting healthy families. Time to point figures at the people hoarding wealth and property.

Harm reduction in canada needs help, I'm in halifax nova scotia canada and we have harm reduction but no push to get clean. People are dying and nothing is being done about it. If anyone has pull, come to Canada and please help I myself have OD on fentanyl and the only reason I'm getting better is because of me. Harm reduction needs help in canada and i don't have the resources to help.

Id like to know more about what's been going on in Canada if you can offer some info. Been doing some personal research on the impacts harm reduction practices have had on places like Vancouver, Halifax, and even in the US in cities like San Francisco

Why can’t we fix this with first a family doctor and access to so much more.

If you felt that, I really don't think she meant to sound like that. I really think starting a nonprofit and finding the money to do all this is quite impressive. Just got narcan from them today. I'm very thankful.

I don’t know about anyone else but I think harm elimination is better than harm reduction. Maybe I’m just old fashioned that way.

I just cannot believe how unintelligent so many humans are. Giving addicts the tools to continue their downward spiral is "Harm Enabling". If you were truly intelligent enough to actually help people, you would demand mandatory drug treatment for addicts. 9,000,000 children in this country are condemned to live with one addicted parent. Please try to become a smarter species. You ARE capable.

@@Michael-fd5pw no he’s right. Where I live these substances are strictly prohibited and almost nobody dies from drug overdoses. It’s crazy to me that your country lets these dangerous drugs in to your cities and then claim that they are the compassionate ones. It’s like giving people less potent poison so they die slow instead of fast. It’s monstrous.

I don’t think you understand dependency. People can use any substance and still be good, caring parents. It is not morally wrong to use drugs. It shouldn’t be treated as a criminal justice issue, it is a health issue. However sadly it is and this creates stigma. Drug testing resolves nothing. It isn’t about knowing if someone is using, it’s about creating healthy conditions where people want to be free of drugs..
