I'm 12 years into my sobriety and I need to repeat what you said because it's so important, "IT TAKES TIME. When you quit your life is in shambles, it's takes time to build it back up." Please don't lose hope. I was unemployed and homeless at one point and now I have a good career in the aerospace industry, own my own house, and am graduating college next month at 43.

UP ones meetings after 5 years...??? Spending the same amount of time if not MORE going to meetings than one did drinking is surely no "bridge to normal living". All the best an all that but I struggle with that one.

Arse Wipe Some people might say “ did u drink every day?” Then you can go to a meeting every day. Nothing would stop you from drinking, now go to a meeting to help assure long time sobriety. Math was never my strong point, I actually have 30 years. Get 30 years one day at a time.

Hi Liz! Congrats on your sobriety. I stopped drinking years ago. And when people ask me why, I tell them I never made a smart decision under the influence of alcohol. It amazes me how people still try to influence me to drink, and I’m 50 years old. The peer pressure still exist. Like you, I realize there is so much more to life than drinking, and love that I have discovered some great hobbies to keep me busy. I hope more people see your story, and are influenced to change if they are struggling with addiction.

I wanna stop. and I'm glad I found this bc I admire Liz and I have so many similar hobbies to her but I just don't like myself so much being around others sober, I feel like I'm so weird and anxious and awkward.ive drank every day for 10 years. Its to the point I have to drink to feel normal, and mentally function.i even had to get my liver looked at at the g.i, my liver enzyme function was at stage 3 and somehow within 6 mos I lowered it by cutting down on whiskey, drastically, I was no longer at a stage 3 liver function (bad) but more at a 1.5. however, I was told my liver is still scarred. I know ultimately the choice is gonna HAVE to be to quit altogether, it's just a horrible battle to even fathom

Thanks for sharing Liz. Over the summer I hit 2 years alcohol free and 300 AT miles on the same day so that was fun. The main thing I appreciate about this... is that I'm watching this on a Sunday morning at the same time all my old friends (that don't call me anymore) are waking up with a horrible hangover and I feel great! When I quit drinking, I didn't really quit. I did a hiatus for awhile but through a few months my friends were calling me boring etc... and that became the driving force to permanently stop. I have an open bet with several friends that if they could hike along a 20 mile day with me on the AT... that I would drink beer with them but "lazy" doesn't win my bets 🙂 Thanks for being an on going inspiration!

I can relate to your story. I drank everyday for 30 years and drinking was a conscious decision on my part based on my poor financial position. I knew I couldn't afford any desired lifestyle, but I could at least afford to drink. One day, I ran, and something strange happened. My desire to drink stopped when I ran. So every time I had a craving, I ran around the apartments., and it worked. I also went from 235 pounds down to 148. However, once I got a sober look at my life, my life still sucked. As a substitute to drinking, I concentrated my life in 3 serious areas: Physical, Financial, and Intellectual pursuits. For Physical pursuit I go to the gym 4 days a week and then section hike the AT twice a year. For Financial pursuit, I bought books on investing and reached $2 million so far. For an Intellectual Pursuit, I do research on Rockets, Electrical Power Generation, and Magneto Hydrodynamic Plasma Rocket Engines. I expect I will stay focused on the 3 pursuits for the rest of my life, or until Alzheimers creeps in.

@@syliviawilliams6735 I bought a lot of books but only one type of investing appealed to me, "Income Investing". it is Ben Stine's book "Yes, you can become a successful Income Investor". It basically outlined investing in things that produce income. The secret is compounding. You get compounding by reinvesting dividends and interest. Fortunately, when I started, interest rates were higher, but there are Closed End Funds and Business Development Companies that still pay high interest. To become a millionaire, you need to invest $1000 a month, at 6.25% interest, for 30 years, compounded. You are only putting in $360K, but you reach a million with compounded interest.

3 years from alcohol today! 8 months in I started hitchhiking/backpacking all 50 states after purging myself of my possessions and leaving my car... 23 down, never felt more alive..... my story is very similar to yours... stop drinking for a little over a year and thought, well I can manage this, it's a psychological thing... slowly but surely went back to drinking vodka for breakfast for years.... as soon as I accepted that I am essentially allergic to alcohol.... like the overwhelming craving for more and more drinks after the first one is not normal and definitely is a physical thing... I'm loving life... thank you for your story... congrats on year 6....

Congrats on your anniversary. I quietly celebrate mine every September 4th. This year will be 19 years. Best decision I ever made. If I had one drink, I had twenty. No such thing as having "a couple of beers" for me. I seemed to manage it okay in college but a few years after I graduated, it just got progressively worse. I'd take a day off to recover and then hit hard again. It became a vicious circle. I eventually had enough bad things happen that I bottomed out and decided that was it. I counted each day of sobriety for the first year, one day at a time. Then I started living life and found stuff to replace the addiction (or put another way, got addicted to healthier stuff). It ranged the gamut from playing in a rock cover band to Civil War reenacting to an obsession with NASCAR to ice climbing to joining the Army Reserve to running to an obsession with English soccer to hiking (which brought me to your channel). I know full well it's a substitute for the several nights a week I'd get hammered but, gosh, all these things have been so fulfilling and/or so much fun. I never would have done any of it if I was still in the throes of my alcoholism. Thank you for being open about your story. I do think it makes a difference. When people see the success that sobriety makes in others, it diminishes the stigma of struggling with this disease and provides hope to those who think they may need to change direction.

Sober again for good now. It's interesting how youtube works. I've been watching sobriety videos and thru hikes. So here I am lol. I'm hoping to do a big hike ASAP, but so many videos have the "OMG trail angel BEER!!11!!" segments. I know I will always have that little part of me that is tempted or thinks it's some sort of reward. Thanks for sharing, sobriety is a pretty lonely gig up here in AK.

This was actually a super refreshing video on this topic because you are so positive! I'm just starting my journey with sobriety... I've been watching a lot of videos on the subject and honestly most of them are pretty depressing and focus more on the difficult parts of sobriety instead of the good ones. But not you! Thank you for giving me some hope. One day at a time.

Congratulations on 5 years of sobriety. First time on your channel. I shall be 1 year sober in January, my life has changed so much. There was no traumatic event in my life that caused me to drink, like you I just loved the stuff, it just creeps up on you and before you know it you can't get through the day without a drink or thinking about when or where your next drink will be. Thank you for the video

Liz thank you for this video. I quit drinking sep 11, 2021 . I ran across you when I watched Evan's video on AT thru hike. Today I watched your AT video then noticed the one on sobriety. I have not thru hiked the AT but hope to in the near future. I am 64 now but am encouraged that I still have enough in the tank to do it. I even have my wife a bit interested. Keep up the good work on sobriety. I hope to be as successful as you have been.

It took a felony DUI when I was 24 to finally wake me up and get me to quit drinking. Alcoholic from the first sip in high school. Sobriety was terrible and boring and scary for a long time. But now I have hobbies I never would’ve had before (motorcycle riding, hiking camping, lifting weights) and if I weren’t sober my only hobby would still be drinking I’m sure. Super thankful to God for helping me wake up and stay sober 5 years last October.

I will have 10 years sober in July. Your story really hit me. Lots of parallels. It’s amazing you got sober so young. I was 39. The #1 thing that rings true is life is SO MUCH BETTER! After the fog lifted I discovered I no longer had a life I wanted to escape from. Congrats on 5 years. This is huge. Hi fives and big hugs! ❤️

Liz, I'm on your site because you met a fellow hiker on the AT and he shared that you got discouraged because some bloggers got nasty... you have a lot to offer and God knows how many lives you have touched and encouraged to become better persons. When you fly like an eagle don't let turkeys get you down. Billy Graham had a magazine called 'Decision', asked why he came up with that name... he said he always was one decision away from blowing his family and reputation apart. God loves us just the way we are yet way too much to keep us that way. Thank you for your story and transparency...don't ever give up Liz, I'm pulling for you.

Awesome. I love your getting sober. I really wish I got my life together earlier. I’m glad I did though. My life now is much better. I have anxiety and used opiates to help. I used pain to cover for it. Legit pain but I became addicted cause of my anxiety. I meditate, am back at the gym this year, beach, loving swimming again. Don’t ever give up. It took me 15 years but I got there. Thank you for sharing.

HEY LIZ I started watching dreadlock videos and found yours. Then finished watching your A.T. documentary. CONGRATS ON THAT ACCOMPLISHMENT also your wedding at the top!! This sobriety story was relatable. I am in my 50s, getting dreadlocks finally! I've wanted them for many many years!! Unfortunately I can't have them done professionally. I'm still super excited though!! Years ago I chose drugs over everything else . Including my own kids. I survived, got my kids back , and have been clean for over 20 years . I have many thjngs on my bucket list . Gratefully I am enjoying my life ! Skydiving is badass!! One day maybe I'll be lucky enough to jump! So happy you are doing great! Love miss piggy too !!

I've always had an addictive personality, luckily I've been able to keep my addictions to safe things so far... but I feel like that's how it always goes, you never lose the addiction, you just put the energy on a different and better avenue. 1 month away!!!!!!!!!! holyshitholyshitholyshit!

Good on ya Liz! So it's kind of amazing that we share the same sobriety birthday. Mine, however, is March 10th, 2013. I was 47 years old when I quit, and quite frankly, wished that I dropped that habit when I was 25. No regrets though, as I'm sure if I didn't quit drinking, I'm pretty sure that I would gotten myself in some sort of trouble with the legal system within the past seven years. Don't wish that on anyone! Keep up your amazing appetite for life, and live the hell out of it!

I love your message and how you give to other addictive type personalities. I love the way you substituted a negative addiction for positive life changing “active” addiction. I wish you a life time of happiness. You’re special.
