My Research has now made it to Industry - Malsha Udayakantha (PhD in Chemistry)
#ScienceTalks #PhDAdvice #SriLanka #Research #Sinhala #Science #Engineering #ResearchAdvice #WomenInScience
I interviewed Malsha Udayakantha who is a Chemistry PhD student at Texas A&M. She was an undergrad at University of Colombo, Sri Lanka
Malsha worked in SLINTEC prior to receiving her PhD offer.
Here's an overview of the questions I asked her and topics we talked about:
0:00 Welcome
0:24 Where did you start? Why did you choose Chemistry?
2:10 Let's talk about your research in University of Colombo - which was published in an International Journal
7:40 Is there potential for Chemistry in Sri Lanka?
8:56 What is your area of research at Texas A&M?
13:29 What are emerging trends of Chemistry nowadays?
14:48 What attitudes do think we need to change to improve Science in Sri Lanka?
17:15 A day you felt like quitting / questioned yourself if you should follow this path
21:37 Women in Science - a message to all girls who want to become scientists
25:54 Brain drain - a new way to rethink how we see brain drain
31:35 What are your plans for the future?
The reason behind making these interview is that I wanted to show the human side of Scientists and also talk in detail about exactly what they are doing for their research.
I also want to bridge the gap between Scientists and those who are not familiar with it. This is something which barely gets attention in mass media nowadays.

That brain drain answer was spot on! We need more international/inter-university collaborations

Yeah! It was eye opening for me. If our generation can have that willingness from both sides, there can be a reverse brain drain where new knowledge comes into the country faster.

@@IQLabs its not the students only but the lecturers too. Many students nowadays want to help but as mentioned, lectures often don't like collaborations, especially if it is between universities in the same country
