One thing that people might not know about Down By The Jetty is that it's in mono.

Yeah... the 2006 deluxe edition was the first time the album was released in stereo, although alternative versions of some songs had to be used for true stereo.

@@alfching2499 Agreed and what is the point of stereo? In Beatle records for instance the bass is positioned in the centre of the sound stage whereas McCartney stood to the left. The only record I know produced to match the traditional positions of the group is the first Ramones' LP where the bass is to the right and Johnny's guitar to the left. Even live LP's are produced differently to the appearance of the group in the picture on the cover. The only benefit I would say, I use the word advisably, is where some silly effect is used to make an instrument, perhaps a saxaphone, appear to fly from one speaker to another as if the musician was on wires. I listen to music in the car, even more stupid, like the guitarist is sitting in my air vent or wing mirror.

Saw them at the Kursaal in Southend in 1974 . With a sprung wooden floor the huge banks of speakers on the stage were swaying back and forth with the movement of the crowd . Happy days ! Also saw Alex Harvey there .

Thank you for the suggestions Paul. I listened to the Zombies when I was young. I'd forgotten how good they were. I once saw Colin Blunstone in concert in Bristol (70's)when he went single. He was good but different. I shall look up the others.

Sure there are tunes in the Jam songs and in his solo stuff. If there are fewer hooks, it’s probably because the vocals, at least in many Jam songs, have this spoken, conversational intensity. I mean, there’s anger and frustration and longing in the songs, and not so divorced from the kind of sound, vibe you’d hear when he spoke. Now, I know, you’re going to clobber me as a pretentious git, but there is my take on things. Just try That’s Entertainment again, especially that line about “two lovers in the tranquility of solitude”-- man, he sings that line and he just captures that little scene.

  • @tonybates7870

What wound me up sometimes with him is when he would try to cram too many words into a line, like he does in "A Town Called Malice", and others. Maybe he got that from John Lennon's "Woman Is The Nigger Of The World", which does something similar. Don't know how you can say none of Weller's songs have hooks, though . . .
