    There's a lot of negativity surrounding the record collecting world, between insanely high prices, bully audiophiles, greedy sellers, people who want to teach you how you are supposed to enjoy music... Then you see people like Barry and he reconnects you with your love for music, which is the only reason we do what we do. What an absolute gentleman.

    Yes..records are way overpriced. Even used records. I went to a flea market recently and they had records they were asking $30.00 for and were in terrible condition. I saw a copy of savage amusement by the scorpions they were asking $30 for and it looked like someone used it to sand down their furniture. And some of the records you'll see $30 one place and $3 somewhere else.

What a knowledge, what a soft and humble man!! Sure as he might understate it, he had his ups and downs (when he briefly evoques he had to sell a small part of his collection) … And so what? I probably have around 1000-1200 of either kind - by far most of them actually found on Ebay or at local thrift shops and second-hand stores, but in good condition, sometimes near mint condition. Some of the CD's are copies off discs I borrowed at the public library - often stuff that would have been very hard to find on the normal market (I rarely buy new CD's at full price anymore). Stretches across a wide band of genres: from classical and opera to rock, jazz, soul and electronic music - and across more than a century of recording.. :)

    When you get to the point where you couldn't possibly listen to all of your music collection even once in your remaining lifetime, is it time to let stuff go for others to enjoy? Obviously, others will enjoy it after you pass, but wouldn't it be more satisfying to watch them enjoy it while you're still alive? Personally, I feel rewarded by the gratitude expressed by folks that are grateful that I was able to share parts of my collection with. It makes the years of collecting all worthwhile. It outweighs the pain of letting go of stuff that you worked so hard to collect, IMHO. Amazing work putting this collection together ❤️.

I'd say put one minty copy of each on the wall and then work though all the ones on the floor. It's not like he's ever going to play all those records again.

    Seems like we’re on the threshold between the collecting world and the hoarding world.

  • @Randy950

    @Randy950

    If you can't get to a cd or even browse them without the whole thing falling down you are a hoarder. The broader point of what he does is listen to a record a few times and put it way forever. This is a sickness. Collecting stuff at this level is like Golem and the Ring, it never ends, and it definitely isn't about music. He should open a record shop so he could get some productivity out of that ridiculous pile. Everyone loves music btw lol. There are other reasons for this. No way there are even that many records worth listening to in the first place.

  • @Pluralofvinylisvinyls

    @@Randy950 yeah it’s ridiculous. I’d have serious anxiety if I had that mess in my house. A personal collection should be curated. With therapy he could probably do without about 90% of those records.

    I've got maybe a thousand LPs and a thousand CDs - I've also got around a thousand movies so my collection is a bit more diverse and I've had a wife to support for 33 years! So I could never hope to get as close as this guy who clearly loves music and music alone. I've got too many interests to build a collection in one area like that. I would call record collecting at Mr Winton's level an art. It is an art form in itself. What an admirable achievement. x
