My Reaction to Ren's RAW Performance of 'Hi Ren' - WOW!

Музыка

This video is all about my reaction to Ren's vulnerable performance of his single "Hi Ren". His emotion and powerful lyrics tore my heart out. I had to break it down and share my thoughts on the track! Watch as I take in this extraordinary and impactful song. So grab your popcorn, press play, and join me as I dive deep into this amazing performance.
Notes "after-the-fact:" The statement he is making...his sharing what he has learned and his experience...sharing his vulnerabilities...sharing his creation...GENEROUS. Such a blessing to be able to use his creativity and skills to give voice to things that so many feel and cannot find the words for. Such a blessing to understand that the power to live is in each of us. Such a blessing to find grace.

First, believe it or not, Ren turns 33 this month (I know, right?). Second, no need to filter his videos. Even if KZread claims copyright, Ren ALWAYS clears it, he is very reactor friendly and oftentimes comments on reactors' videos.

Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction. No matter how many times I watch this, I still get emotional. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered almost 8 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZread are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. "The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," “War Pigs,” "My Generation," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo medical treatment for his multiple health issues, including surgeries. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren has hinted that he might release his newest song on March 29, which is his birthday.

This is a masterpiece of modern art. I have struggled with mental health my entire life. Although it has mostly manifested itself in depression, I have the genetic pre-disposition for schizophrenia, bi-polar, and multiple personality disorder. These things loom over me constantly, a constant reminder that even if my depression gets better, there's something much worse that could await me in the future. As an ex-vangelical...someone who grew up in the church, and as someone who has struggled with mental health, I deeply relate to the dichotomy of self represented in this video. "The pendulum between good and evil" (paraphrase). I have broken away from the religion of my parents and now as an adult, I am realizing that mental health and religion are intertwined. I will always be fighting a battle within my mind and it's art like this that makes me not feel alone.

  • @JenniferTakes

Wow. Thank you for sharing! Our spirituality is our own personal swinging of the pendulum. Separating my spirituality from "religion" has been key to my own ability to understand angels and demons and relate to the Divine. It has helped keep my mind strong. Spirituality is attached to the soul. In my opinion, religion exists to allow "man" to manage your relationship with the Divine. Not necessary...it, He, She, whatever, is an all of us.

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative ten makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet.

This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song. Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome. There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me… just as this song also resonates. As a person who’s never been able to escape imposter syndrome and negative self-talk, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that I *know* I have-was sooo important. It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it. *Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison. You are *stronger* than that voice. You are stronger than you can *possibly* know… until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Thing is, the internal dialog is a device that has been used, maybe not from the dawn of creation, but at least since recorded history. But everyone does it differently, everyone brings something new. But I guarantee you no one has EVER done it like this. Thank you for your reaction, and thanks to Ren for this profound piece of art.

Many of us had the same emotional reaction the first time. You have to watch it again to get the full artistry of it all. It is like watching a play. He is a musician, singer, poet and actor (watch his face and body change when he portrays both 'sides'). He released Illest Of Our Time the other day, May 29 on his 33rd birthday. Gotta react to the full 13 min video of The Story of Jenny and Screech. Not his own story, but a tragic tale that is another awesome performance!

FYI you have your condenser mic oriented wrong. It needs to be straight up and down. It also has a front and a back. The way you have it in this video it is only picking up the bounce from walls and ceiling, which is why you sound so airy and quiet. So up and down, front toward your mouth. 👍

Great reaction! I cry every time I watch this video. The only time I dident cry was the first time I watched, listened to it when my son introduced me to this beautiful song, I held back the tears cause I dident want to cry in front of my son. He's never seen me cry and I try not to in his presance cause I don't want him to worry about me. But yeah, beautiful stuff. Take care

FYI, Ren has made it clear in YT responses to reactors that he's not going to pursue copyright strikes against anyone, so you don't need to distort the video like this. If you get a strike, he says to object to it and he will make it go away. He's independent, so this is his choice, not Sony's.

Hi, i have subscribt, because of ren, i have not seen your other content but its not necessary, because thanks to REN i know that you are a good person who deserves support, because REN-HI REN is not just a masterpiece of art with a helping and partially healing effect, but also a work of art that, if you watch the people watching the video watch and listen to the song, letting them know what they were by their gestures, facial expressions, eye expressions and how they generally react to it. it makes no difference whether man, woman, metal lover, hip hopper (rapper), rock and pop lover, classic music lover and everyone else. somehow nobody can escape the effect as long as he can understand English reasonably well. So I know that it can only be worthwhile to follow you on a mental level, because you can only get good entertainment with a high level from good people. 😘
