You probably won’t read this whilst in Calgary Ren, but you kind of broke me and fixed me with your talent of speaking to the soul of most who struggle and hide it. As someone who was sectioned through psychosis due to prescription treatment, I understand. You are half my age and yet you touch so many across the generations. I’m so proud of you 🇬🇧👍x

Beautiful and honest reaction Sarah. I have watched a lot of reaction video for this song. I think that part of the reason I have watched so many is because I can never experience this video again for the first time myself. I experience a piece of that vicariously through the reaction videos, and your reaction truly moved me. Ren has created a powerful piece of art here and it was cathartic to see it resonate with you as it did for me. You have no reason to apologize at the end of the video. Thank you for your honesty.

I had no idea what to expect, that definitely wasn’t it. That left me speechless, the internal battle within our own mind is a strong one, I love how he talked about when he became more rigid, the dance became harder, so you have to relax. Take time to breathe and try to allow peace to come in with each breath, fighting how we are programmed is difficult, but we need to learn how to process information differently to protect ourselves from the torture of the unwinable battle. Love to everyone, no matter what music you find peace in, immerse yourself in that music.❤

@@SarahDengler thank you for sharing this, I think that most people do have the internal battle, especially once we become parents. Am I doing the right thing, if I had done things differently wouldn’t it be better now? Then we look at the world around us, we question why there are wars when thousands are dying in natural disasters, but look closer, hundreds are coming together to help save as many people as possible, we are all human beings, we are all the same ❤️

Another very beautiful, genuine reaction. Thank you for your thoughtful comments at the end. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 4 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are often recorded live in a single take (although not necessarily the first take). His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are also worth checking out; they are simply amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” "War Pigs," "Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.

Hi. I too have an inner gaslighter and it is usually pretty savage. I suffered terribly fighting it for decades. Then, one day, I realised it wasn't my enemy. It was my wound. And I had been attacking my wound in order to make it go away. To approach a wound may be distasteful. But it carries none of the threat in tension that an enemies carries. I discovered being kind and compassionate towards that gaslighter took me out of the war zone and placed me somewhere better. Over time, through changing the relationship I have with my gaslighter, I have come to simply disbelieve the nonsense it comes out with. I can never escape it. But I can defuse the grenades it throws in my direction. Firstly by reacting with kindness to this wound, and then, gradually, by simple, open disbelief. You are not alone.

Hi, I just discovered your channel after watching a couple other reactions to "Hi Ren", to date I've probably seen 35-40 reactions to this beautiful work of art, but I have to say, your commentary at the end moved me almost as much as the song did the first time I saw it. I don't comment much on videos, and I can't explain it really, you didn't say anything so novel to me that it was a new revelation, but it was the way you expressed it, the words you chose, but mostly because I could sense an amazing amount of compassion, love, and unfortunately some life experience, the type that shakes our core, that beats us up and makes it so much more able to relate to a song like this. You used the phrase "this young man", and it really hit me that he's not quite out of his 20's yet, and I know he doesn't' have it all figured out, and will still face his battles throughout his life, but boy oh boy, to have that kind of foresight and self knowledge at that age is impressive in itself. I'm a bit further along in my journey and have taken a wrong turn, and for the life of me can't find my way back to my path, and the group I traveled with haven't noticed I'm missing or just kept going. Although I don't let the dark Ren have total control, he has run amuck, and definitely influences my direction and moods. Again, I can't explain it, I'm honestly a little freaked out how much your words.....felt like home, like a kindred spirit that I knew from a past life, and gave me a brief reprise from the loud banging and screaming of my dark Ren, and a little hope that maybe I do have some fight left in me. I know you don't know me from Adam, and I hope this doesn't come off as creepy, or weird, and I'm sorry I rambled, I just had to message you simply to say thank you, and whatever your path is or whatever brings you joy and inner peace, keep doing it, because it suites you well, you have a beautiful soul, thank you for sharing a small piece of it with your audience. ✌💚 P.S. If you didn't know at 17 Ren became very ill, and in lots of pain, he almost gave up several times it was so bad, doctors misdiagnosed him and some said it was all in his head. This all happened right after he was discovered by Sony music, but they backed out after he got sick. After many years of this, he finally found a doctor that believed him, and they did extensive testing that revealed he had Lyme Disease causing his autoimmunity, which made his condition at least manageable, but still not great. He's currently, or he was last week, in Canada, where he found a clinic or specialists that deals with his type of illness specifically, and was very optimistic about his trip there. So all us fans are keeping our fingers crossed for a positive outcome. Here is a clip, you need not react to it, I just thought you would enjoy it, it's Ren on Twitch just after the video premiered, talking about why he wrote it, and a little more back story on his illness. It's vey sweet, but gets emotional for a bit, just so ya know. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2WCw5WngbnFaLQ.html

It is i who is saying thank you to you for beautiful, emotional, and well understood reaction to Ren as he battled his subconscious. I've many different reactions to Hi Ren, I found yours very emotional as I tuned into watching you and what you were doing as he was waging his war inside of his mind. There's one place in the song that I've not heard a thought on though so I don't know if what I felt is what he meant. It was when he said that "some know me by the name of hope and others by the sound you hear when they loosen the noose at the end of the rope". In my mind going back to the very first words he said in the song and then the above comment, along with the sound he then made along with the lights flashing, I felt that he, at least in his mind, was referring to his protentional suicide or attempt. Did you or anyone else get that feeling? Again, thank you for your beautiful reaction and message, this is the first time that I've seen your channel but won't be the last.

Thanks Sarah❤️ Beautiful reaction. I've been around the block...a couple of times. This art-set-to-music has really become a touchstone for people (so many people) struggling. Whether it's with our own identity, or drugs or for Ren his psychosis the message is powerful. Ren has struck a nerve that runs through ALL of us. And through his empathy connected on a level that is beyond simple understanding. It's a universal truth. We are human. Each of us unique but still have so much in common. We are exquisitely fragile yet so unbelievably capable. And...we all struggle with this internal dialogue. Many of us 'appear' to have 'it' under control. Rare few of us really do. I was 63 when I heard this for the first time. Having been around the block I've seen and heard tens of thousands of songs, hundreds of bands and more than a few real ARTISTS. This man is without peer. I've heard music that will make a grown man cry. And I've heard music that is an utter waste of brain cells. This work of art nearly had me sobbing out loud. And I just watched 20 different reaction videos before yours and every single one affected me the same way... until I saw yours. You are not alone. There are probably more of us that have been struggling than not. We are in this struggle with you. We will stand up, together.

OK I have no idea why I haven't seen this until now. Cam here after seeing your Chalk Outlines reaction. You have absolutely no reason to apologize. You absolutely are not alone. This song has brought the inner struggle to light for so many people, me included. Gets me every time I see/hear it. So no apologies needed for the tears. It's one of those beautiful things about being human. I also love your closing. You too, be safe, stay kind. You have a new subscriber here.

Wow! Of all the reactions I have listened to thus far, yours is one of the most beautiful, touching, honest reviews. It embraces such a lot of what each person experiences to a greater or lesser degree. Thereby you have truly touched on the depth and essence of this song...in truth you have touched, in my humble opinion, on the heart of Ren. May you, along with Ren, be blessed for bringing awareness to the daily struggles in life.

Thank you, Sarah. This was a beautiful reaction to an incredible, and powerfully performed work of art. Ren, in my opinion, has been the best thing to have happened in music for a very long time. (lol I'm 56.. the "new" music doesn't often impress me..) The first time I watched "Hi Ren", was from a reaction video. Usually, I like watching people to react to music I'm familiar with, but this song kept showing up and I finally clicked to see why everyone was reacting to it. Now, it's hard to say how many times I've watched this video since, (a lot) but it's nearly impossible to keep from tearing up every time. It hits hard, but we all know it is the truth for so many. Again, thank you, Sarah.

Hi Sarah, lovely heartfelt reaction to Ren's masterpiece. Don't ever feel like you need to apologize for your tears. A part of being human, a part of the dance, is having emotions and processing them. Just be yourself. We'll be here for you. You are not alone.

Thank you for your video. I’ve seen a few reactions to this song, because it affected me so much.. and yours was the closest to my own reaction. I literally couldn’t stop the tears from falling because I saw so much of my experience in his words-and not just his words, but the music and the other performance elements. It was exactly what I have felt in my darkest hours. Thank you for your honest reaction 💜

Hi Sarah, I saw you on a mashup of this song and wanted to see your full reaction, which I was right to do because I found it very touching. It's easy to read your emotions as the song progresses. I'd like to give you another perspective: - This voice is not your enemy. It's there to protect you from failure because it knows you and knows what the consequences could be. - But you refuse to listen. So it fights back. And the more you reject it, the more violent it becomes. Ren captures this very well in the development of their dialog. - When you're young (especially), you rush headlong into things, you're convinced you're different, and you don't want to listen to the people or the voice that's warning you! Ren may be a genius, but there aren't many Rens! - Listening to that voice doesn't mean you have to obey it. You, and only you, make the decisions. But as long as you listen to it, it will weaken. - For me, that voice never manifested itself in this way because my parents took care of it. I was always wrong, everything was always my fault, and I had no right to complain! On the other hand, my parents were lovely, but instead of pushing me, they tended to hold me back. I created my own cocoon and never talked about what was going on inside me, what I was feeling. And it didn't cause me any problems. - Today I'm 55 years old and this is how these 2 voices work: I call them the thinking me and the acting me. One thinks, the other produces. But there's only one seat in the cockpit. So I can't have both together. And it's me who sometimes gets fed up with one and says I need the other. And during the night they change positions! What made me fully aware of this was that I burnt out a little. And the me who acts disappeared. On the other hand, on my bed, I was writing tons of projects, articles, and so on. I just had to get back to work! Luckily it came back and everything went back to normal. But all that time spent with that voice made me realize that it was much more than a voice warning me. That's all it is until you listen to it. But it's capable of so much more. It's the one that gives me all my business ideas, carefully weighing the pros and cons, the risks, the skills I need to acquire. And it's the one that tells me: That's it. You've reached the required level of quality (but who also tells me it's not good enough). And I've learned to trust that opinion. I know your reaction and the messages are a year old, but hopefully you'll read them and my message will help you. All the best.

!She Sells Seashells on the Sea Shore is a KZread meme based on the second verse of the song "Money Game Part 2" by Ren, a rapper, which was posted on April 16, 2020 (it is the origin of the meme). This song starts with a lyric from the 19th-century tongue twister "she sells seashells on the sea shore."
