True to the brand’s name, this WFO RDO 4 Star bike rolls on 29” wheels, and sure enough, uses the “CVA” suspension design- something that’s only found on Niner Bikes. After riding Dave Weagle designed DW Link, Split Pivot, and Delta Link; as well as testing other designs like Switch Infinity, Horst, and VPP, the CVA is definitely a legit set up. I was quite surprised at how poppy it is, and this suits my needs nicely. Traction was great, and it pedaled just fine.
The bike does have a lot of travel, but it carries it nicely when applied to gnarlier terrain. One thing I really liked was that I didn't have to seek out the gnarliest of the gnarly in order to enjoy the bike- it was nicely matched for the normal blue and black level trails I find myself on most often. Some other 180mm bikes need 40+ foot jumps and mega steep trails in order to be fun- not the case with the Niner. And that was super fun!

    Hi Jeff, Great review. I share many of your thoughts after spending 2 weeks testing the WFO. I spent all my time in the high-mode and loved the bike as a long-legged trail bike that could be pointed straight through crud that would usually require some line-picking. I'm with you for liking more poppy bikes which usually has me avoiding long travel bikes (I've found the Pivot Firebird is another poppy similar bike). I was lucky enough to have owned a Rip9 many years ago so was already a fan of CVA and its supportive/poppy nature and the WFO obviously kept that going. Our biggest issues (a few other shop guys tried the bike after me) were with pivot bolts shaking loose - When I get one of these as a personal bike I will be doing a thorough loctite application to all bolts. I think the fun thing with this bike is that it is a great road trip bike if you have spare wheels. Have one wheelset set up light and that'll make for a fun trail bike. Have another wheelset with DD tires and maybe inserts and you have a bike that is more suited to rougher faster descents.

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    Thanks for the note! You're the second person to mention loose pivots. I didn't have any continuous loose pivot problems with either Niner WFO- the e9 or the regular WFO in this video. Sounds like it might be a Rip 9 issue? Anyhow, of all my bikes, the Evil has the hardest time staying tight. The Yeti needs a quarter turn every few rides, but is pretty solid. Most of the modern bikes are pretty good.

    Yet another fantastic video! As for compounds, if you're comparing Schwalbe's Orange/Soft compound with Maxxis' MaxxGrip compound it's a bit of an unfair comparison. Schwalbe do a Purple/UltraSoft compound which would be more comparable. Orange/Soft is equivalent to MaxxTerra.

    Great review Jeff! I had a 2020 Niner Rip 9 RDO and loved that bike (especially once I put a coil on it). Rode it for two seasons and wanted to try something with a bit more travel and was seriously looking at the WFO. Ended up going with a 2022 Evil Wreckoning, which has blown me away so far, but I'd be interested in hearing your comparison to the WFO if you ever get a chance to test a Wreckoning. It seems like their missions are similar: poppy, playful, and fun long travel machine that is pretty easy to throw around but can smash when needed.

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    @JeffKendallWeed

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks man, I appreciate that! I enjoy my Evil, though it's an Offering, not a Wreckoning. That said, I would not describe it as poppy and playful. I would describe it as having a ton of traction and a very open feeling rear end, which works great for many people, but I can't get close to the same amount of pop on the Offering as I can on the RDO. On the flip side, the Evil has better small bump compliance than the Niner, and feels like it'd be a little more at home in the bike park or flow trails. I'm not very concerned with small bump, which is probably why I've liked Ibis bikes so much for so long, nor am I big fan of coil suspension. As I always say, I'm a terrible bike reviewer!

    @@JeffKendallWeed thanks for the additional insight! Yeah I should say it is not poppy like my short travel bike is, but it has surprised me with the push coil I put on it hour eager it is to jump and rip considering the travel and weight. So have you had a chance to try out the new PNW Range 35mm bar/stem yet? It's nice to hear of a long travel bike that is actually playful. Even the Ripmo is definitely quite linear out back unless you run a cascade link (which was a game changer on my Ripmo)

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    @JeffKendallWeed

    Yes- the Niner has the PNW 35mm diameter Range bar and the 35mm diameter Range 50mm long stem. It feels good- a slight bit softer than the old 31.8mm, which is nice. FWIW, the WFO is a little bit more progressive than either my Ripmo AF or my Ripmo V2- maybe 10% more progression. Stock WFO set up is about comparable to the Cascade link on my Ripmo V2. Both bikes have X2 shocks, though I have not checked volume reducer counts on either in a while and I forget the exact settings.

It's pretty rocky in AZ... Low bottom brackets suck in the rocks. Isn't it the stem bolts that actually hold the headset tight? In my experience, if the headset is loosening up, it's movement of the steerer tube inside the crown of the fork.

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    @JeffKendallWeed

    2 жыл бұрын

    AJ, it's both stem bolts and compression device. However, I get those stem bolts to a good 6 nm, which is the max most stems allow for. We used to use big ol through-bolts all the way from top cap to fork crown BITD, that helped a ton. However, I've had headset issues on every long travel 29" bike that uses the 38 fork at 170+ mm of travel. Most folks won't, but it has happened to me, so I'd like to report it.

    Hi jeff! I've been your fan since my first day of riding mountain bikes lol (over 2 years now). I am looking for a new bike to replace my pivot firebird 29. I still want a long travel enduro bike, but i need the poppy ones this time so i can play around more. The firebird is just a lazy, plowy bike in my experience. I trust your opinion on bikes! Right now (because of this review) i am considering this WFO. My other options are yeti sb150, the new bronson, evil wreckoning, new decinci spartan, RM altitude, norco range. What can you recommend?

    Nothing in the enduro category that you mention will be as poppy as the SB150. I own the 130LR and the amount of speed and float over terrain is addicting. Yetis are very fast bikes, if you want something cushy and plow like, then a Yeti may not be your thing.

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    @JeffKendallWeed

    2 жыл бұрын

    Robert, you're the second person to mention "issues". The other guy talked about loose pivots. I wonder if things have improved over the years? Often an older problem keeps getting brought up despite a brand fixing the issue. For example- Ibis bushings were poo-poo'd because other brands bushing designs from years prior were not reliable. On both of the WFOs (e bike version and this) the pivots were fine for me, with no weird consistent loosening. My main complaints are OEM spec- undergunned headset, heinous saddle, lightweight tires, etc, but at this point I have a good amount of trust in the integrity of the frame itself. Every single manufacturer has warranty cases out there, and I haven't seen or heard of an unusual amount of Niners going south. I do know that Niner and Ibis have both used some of the same manufacturers over the years, and I am familiar with the kinds of defects we'd eventually see, and they were not terrible by any means. Niner does sell more bikes than Ibis, and news of a warranty issue always carries a lot faster and farther than no news!

    Another great video Jeff, but your body language (particularly in the first part of the video), says you’re having to work really hard to get the best from the bike. Is that how it felt? Most often the bike seems to be part of you, viz Occam/Ripmo, but this seems to need a much firmer hand. Perhaps that’s why the bars come so wide…

    Hey DB, don't read too much into the first shots with the blue shirt. That bike was 100% stock and it was literally my first day riding it. By the time I got my own cockpit and tires on there, I had it feeling way better for my style, and I was a lot more adapted to it. Also, that first trail is one of my favorites, and that's because it's quite flat and awkward. It requires massive amounts of hops and pumps to carry speed through, and I do love that challenge.

    Hey Darkness, I'd prefer to keep my relationship with Jenson going for a very long time. I've learned that sponsor relationships are most valuable when they do last a long time. For example, Hans Rey and GT. Greg Minnaar, Steve Peat and Santa Cruz. Jared Graves and Yeti. I've been formally working with Jenson for 4 years now, and I hope that we can continue for many, many more years. The ability to ride a whole slew of different brands of bikes is a lifelong dream. As a kid, I wanted to be a bike tester for a MTB magazine. Today, that's basically what I'm doing. Which is super cool- and that's in no small part to the partnership with Jenson!

    Jeff, I really like watching you ride but I just wish you’d get on with the content instead of talking about your sponsors at the start of every video. Every one of them has a disclaimer at the start and some kind of potted employment history of how you used to work for Ibis or you used to work for WTB or how you used to be a semi pro trials rider or how you used to race downhill, I know all that and I don’t need you to validate your knowledge by giving me your CV on each video. It’s painful to listen to and plays like a stuck record. I’m sorry to be so harsh but it makes me not want to click on your videos because it’s like watching an advert or a sales pitch. Can’t bloody tell whether you’re genuine or not. I know you’ve got to keep your sponsors happy but your subscribers just want to see your content and see you ride so why not just flash all your sponsors up in the opening montage? You don’t really owe them any more than that and nobody else on KZread has a big speech at the start of their videos with a list of sponsors and a potted employment history, you’re the only one 🤷‍♂️

    Thanks for the note Tim! I have to follow the law. In the USA, the Federal Trade Commission requires anyone discussing a product to also disclose any relationships that might "affect" their opinion of said product. This is why I disclose the 4 sponsorships I have, and in this case, thought I'd throw in the Ibis mention since I did some work for them somewhat recently. If you don't want to hear the disclosures, try any of the non-product related videos on my channel. Or hit the mainstream MTB media websites, they fail to disclose advertiser relationships daily.
