I forgot to mention: the glasses I'm wearing at 4:23 are blue light filtering glasses that can be bought for cheap on amazon. However, you should still avoid electronic devices as their addictive qualities still keep your mind alert and over stimulated. Switching to something entirely different is key.

do note that it also relies on what you are doing on those devices.. i have prescription glasses wich have blue light filters in them (i specifically wanted them to give me those because they are a lifesaver) now about two to three hours before i go to bed i swap from playing a game like the sims (wich isn't really that stimulating in the first place but i like relaxing games because they allow me to put things in order and clear up my mind) to watching some netflix.. now currently i watch a ton of k-drama wich relying on the subgenre often is quite relaxing to me. i also heard a tip from someone to just put on the most boring and dragging show ever and you'll get tired pretty quickly.. though reading a book helps me too (i'm a picture reader so i don't really take in the words instead my brain just insta tracks it to visuals i am a lucid dreamer so i'm quite visually adept when it comes to imagining stuff.. to a point where if i focus in my dreams i'll be able to see the tiniest details of the buildings in my dreams) so relying on the mood i'm in at that moment i'll do one out of a few things but i do know that if i were to keep playing games i'll have a hard time sleeping.. i also find that jasmin tea before bed also helps me calm down as the taste and scent of it makes me feel at peace (lastly i do know that there are some devices like phones that have in build blue light filters i know my phone has one that i always have on because i tend to get random thoughts when in bed i need to get an answer for so i grab my phone and google it and thanks to the in build filter i search find the answer and put it away before just being able to relax)

Great tips! I generally over stimulate myself before bed. I watch (listen) TV and play a game on my phone at the same time. And I'll do that until I start to nod off. I knew it wasn't a good way to handle my overactive mind, but it does wear me out so I can sleep. I will be trying your tips! Thanks for the video!

It is, but with extreme discipline you can achieve it. Though after a while you will get somewhat burnt out if you don't switch it up. I did this with a job I worked at, it help me to achieve a pattern of consistency and order. Unfortunately I did not establish a pattern to ween myself off when I resigned and just up and resigned and it's taken me awhile to get back to where I want to be. Anxiety has been a part of the issue of getting another job and going through interviews. I'm good with the work part but the interviews... Working on it.

I'm very sensitive to scents, so I wouldn't do anything like that. Taking magnesium helps for me. I also have a tea that is specifically for sleep. To me, listening to romantic movies helps me sleep. I absolutely hate them for their predictable story lines, but I find that when I go to sleep, they're boring enough to help me fall asleep. Then again, I fell asleep on the English Patient 3 times. I also fell asleep on the book. With my eyes open. That was weird.

my every nighttime routine is watching youtube until I fall asleep. some also suggest that reading is helpful but for me it's not because my imagination runs wilder whenever I read books. yesterday, I tried to change something in my habit(but still fell asleep around 2:30 am), for me I think making essays about a certain topic is helpful to exhaust me and my mind. but I still need more ways to easily fall asleep.

Good tips. Thanks. Here is my night time routine. I use cheap amber lenses to block blue light (Walmart $5) and I use a blue light blocker on my laptop which I use for a couple of hours until I go to sleep. When it is time to attempt sleep I put on a KZread video of a science talk or anything where people are talking. It just has to be long, not too interesting, and at least an hour or more. I adjust the volume to just be able to hear it, dim my screen most of the way, and move my laptop next to the bed. Then I put on my CPAP headgear and light blocking sleep mask. After adjusting my many pillows around me and I'm finally getting comfortable on my side, I put a fairly heavy throw pillow over the ear that is still exposed to help me feel completely isolated and secure. I also have a sound machine that is running constantly and I because I bury myself in my pillows, I bought an alarm with a vibrating "bed shaker" that I have under my head pillows that wakes me from the dead, no matter what. The regular alarm wasn't loud enough. It is a good system that works when I work it. I still never sleep through the night though. I sleep in maybe, 2 hour cycles where I wake up and try to start another one, and I usually have to get up to pee at least twice a night. I am still the problem as I often "choose" to postpone and postpone and postpone and postpone sleep time until there is so little night left, I am not sure if I should even try to sleep or just get up a little early for work. Then it is Hell and I know it's going to be a bad day. That's when I reach for the morning caffeine and Adderall, which help get me through part of the day, but it is obviously no substitute for sleep and if I just take more, I end up having even more difficulty getting sleepy when I want to. When I get home from work I often struggle to try to stay awake all evening until bedtime. I will say that I think the amber glasses might have made the biggest difference in my getting sleepy. When I first started using them I noticed myself yawning hours earlier than "normal". I am often on the lookout for better/different ideas and will be reading the comments to see what I can glean from all of my fellow night zombies.

All melatonin does for me is give me migraines, so, I use sleep hypnosis recordings here on KZread. If I'm feeling really restless, I take a dose of my anti-anxiety medication, hydroxyzine. It is a non-addictive antihistamine, which is used as a light sedative to treat anxiety and insomnia. It's almost twice as potent as Benadryl.

By the way, the plug-ins can make Pets sick. My dog threw up for two days before I figured out what was causing it and threw them away. They may smell somewhat good to us but they’re chemicals that are very bad for them. I enjoy putting lavender on my pillow too, but I plan to get a cat and recently found out that they can’t stand the smell of lavender or citrus, my two favorite fragrances! 😬😡Now I’ll be researching what essential oils I can use.

LOL it's funny you showed that Hunger Games book ... back when I read that one (around the time of the movies) I hyperfocus on it so bad reading the entire trilogy that I stayed up really late. One of those times was pretty much all night. On a weekday. I've tried melatonin before. Didn't seem to really do anything. Also seemed to wake up with headaches when I used it.

  • @attheranch873

Thanks for bringing this up. This is so hard for me to do for the exact reasons you mentioned. If I start reading I can get hyper focused. Regardless of what I do, I want to keep on doing it. I can’t tear myself away. I know I need to go to sleep but I’ll do my damnedest not to. I don’t know why do this. Anyone, what are some other low-key things that we can do before sleep?

I haven't been trying this for long so I don't know if it'll work very well but I find I can only listen to audiobooks at bedtime if I've already heard them otherwise I either get too interested or I start worrying I'm going to miss what's happening. I've heard some people find colouring or other low-energy arts/crafts are good (like knitting maybe)

If you have insomnia reading a textbook that's way out of your field of knowledge can wear your mind out quickly and make you want to sleep. When I can't sleep reading a Chinese grammar book usually does the trick. Plus I think my brain is so afraid of learning Chinese that my insomnia basically went away in the last year!

@@guptadagger896 It COULD be harmful by confusing the body. IF the melatonin acts like a depressant, then you are taking a depressant followed by a stimulant. Not good. But that is a big unknown IF. Though that said, there is little scientific evidence that melatonin has any effect on the body when taken orally. So likely it's not going to matter either way.
