    What strings do you use? I have that bass. The F Bass Strings were coming in with bad strings. I have SR 2000s on it now…open core over bridge saddles…(except the G) BUT…I don’t think SR 2000s are being made. They also had some major string defects with dead strings from a new factory. Let me know!

    I have an Ibanez SR500 series and that bass gives me exactly the feeling of how it feels an extension of my body. Been playing with the idea of getting a 5 string and I loved the Ibanez so much wasn't sure if I should just stick with Ibanez or not but this F Bass seems to share a lot of similarities in terms of body shape, tone diversity, controls, etc. Great quick review of the bass Scott, definitely put it on my radar!

    I have been noticing that bass in recent videos. Love how the pickups blend into the paint job and it sounds wonderful. 5-strings really aren't my thing (I often use a heavier gauge strings on one bass, so I usually just it tune down to B-E-A-D when I need that low B sound), but I got to say that BN5 rocks!

    There are a ton of choices these days. While you can buy what Scott plays, do you think that he'd buy what you played? 😎 Half the fun is checking out new things. I have an assortment of world class basses (down to around twenty now) and I've flipped many and kept the really cool ones. Most were bought used, which is what any bass will be after it's originally purchased anyway. I've saved as much as 75% on some. Owned five F basses; a Studio 5, three BN5's and a BN6. Most I paid used was $1,400. Coincidentally I've owned five Roscoes, five Laklands and five Elricks among other things back when these were all being given away on the secondary market. If you're patient there are still lots of crazy deals out their.

    @@shelleyberry188 Probably because if you get your hands on a really good bass you might find that there is no real advantage to fanned frets. Many luthiers can even make shortscale fives and up with phenomenal B string performance. The idea that scale length alone yields a better B is outdated. The nail in the coffin for that old trope was discovering that the best performing string sets for me have been 120 to 40. Takes very little effort to get massive performance with a good bass and low action. Most guys are shocked when they play my basses. How could it be that easy? 😎

    I have an LTD Active 5 string with EQ. Having the EQ is great to really dial in the bass sound, just don't like the need of batteries... always get nervous around show time and end up swapping out batteries prematurely just to make sure the bass doesn't loose power mid gig.... but it is fun for jam nights at an open mic night. lots of flexibility on the sound. my primary Bass for my bands is a Fender American Pro 5 string P Bass. Simple, good bass.

    Keep the bass unplugged when not in use. There are battery testers that plug into your output jack. I don't use them, my basses give sonic warning when they're near the end of life. Funny thing, some develope a cool growl, sounding better than ever. Most of my basses have active bypass. Zero anxiety. Going passive typically just means adding some gain at the amp to compensate and use the amp's EQ if needed. Simple. Preamps are often redundant. And most don't seem to realize that.

  • @patchieseec

    @patchieseec

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, learned pretty quick to keep it unplugged when not in use. This active bass doesn't have a passive switch, so the bass just starts to act unruly/cut out all together when the battery is almost dead or entirely dead. I ought to look into a tester for it since it really gives me no indication of how the battery is doing. I now mostly use it for open mic nights so it doesn't see as much use as it did with my other bands.

    1. If you use drop d tuning a lot, a low B gets in the way (and playing the d on the B string isn't the same thing). 2. Slapping is generally better with a 4 string. 3. The low b often sounds tonally different to other strings with many 34 string basses. 4. The low b is most useful when you're playing high up in the fretboard. I prefer to play the same notes lower in the fretboard tonally. I'd prefer a high c instead in most situations. There's a reason many virtuosos prefer 4. I use a mix, but would always prefer a fretted 4 and a fretless 6.

    Really great bass. There is something about the strings that have this sound even when the electronics aren't turned on. WHICH brand/model/guage STRINGS ARE THOSE? I think they're worth trying. It's interesting that F built the scale length in 34.5", kind of midway between standard length and what Ibanez (BTB) and Lakland have been doing.

    F-bass manufactures their own strings that are tapered and their bridges are only set up to fit tapered strings (for their stock basses, of course! Who knows if there's some custom stuff going on here)

    I have the same bass! What strings do you use? The F Bass Strings were coming in with bad strings. I have SR 2000s on it now…open core over bridge saddles…BUT…I don’t think SR 2000s are being made. They also had some major string defects with dead strings from a new factory. Let me know!

    Hi Scott, thank you for showing this bass and its tonal variations. Would you mind clarifying your EQ? Is it "all the way up" or "all the way off"? I can't quite make the distinction, other than watching the knob positions; hence I assume that bass all the way "up", mid all the way "up", and treble all the way "off". Also, what are the center frequencies of the bass, mid, and treble EQ that are being adjusted? I can't seem to find such info on FBass BN Series website. Thank you much!

    Rich Brown mode, treble off, mids and lows maxed. You can get alot of tonal variations adjusting the two volumes or balance knob. You can set the EQ flat or more towards a brighter sound then fatten it up by rolling back the passive tone knob. All of the F Basses I owned had static centers on the EQ... not adjustable. I've found switchable or sweepable centers to largely to be useless. Example: on my basses with Bartolini NTMB preamps with one or two mid centers, I typically don't use the mid control. You also have a coil tap. George F. built in a ton of flexibility with only six knobs. Experiment... it's fun and informative. And that's not even mentioning hand position and touch.

    @@Brad5161 This is always helpful reminder - the tonal variety these days throughout the signal chain is just off the charts - sometimes that slight twist of the knob is a pot-sweetener for a certain space and time - kick it up a notch or 11. Damnit, how do y'all keep us chasing these bass rabbit holes 🎸🎸🙃🙃💗💗
