My new computer has arrived
Ian Mapleson, one of my viewers, has done an extraordinary thing: he has sent me a new computer. As a way of thanking him, I have made this video.

Baffling. The video is clearly 5 years old, but KZread is presenting it as though it were uploaded January 30, 2024.

It said X79 on the motherboard box, so it's an LGA2011 board, which in turns means it'll have a 3000-series or 4000-series Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition in it. Not exactly brand new then (on the platform side, at least; maybe the GPU is newer), but still quite powerful.
@mapesdhs597
6 жыл бұрын
(I think LB might do something else about it later, not sure) Yes indeed it's an X79, but the CPU is a 10-core XEON E5-2680 v2 (IvyBridge-EP). I was originally going to use a 3930K, but that meant overclocking to achieve the threaded performance I wanted. Later though, the E5 became affordable, which means the H100 cooler is kinda overkill but it does mean very minimal noise.
@rjfaber1991

+mapesdhs - Interesting... Kind of forgot about Xeons also fitting on LGA2011, but then I'm more of an AMD guy myself, so I've never been quite so intimately familiar with Intel sockets and their associated CPUs.

The thing is, his anger at it is based on a misunderstanding. He interprets it as "explore beyond _your_ limits", but there's no "your" in there. It could just as well mean "explore beyond [the] limits [of your knowledge]".

Outstanding! What a generous gift, Ian. And what a deserving recipient! My wife & I agree that Lindy is one of the classiest KZreadrs out there. We're looking forward to seeing what manner of magic will be wielded by this new machine. Mind you, we are neither "early adopters" nor especially current in keeping up with the current state of computer technology. Witnesseth, for instance, that our "new" still camera here is a Kodak Brownie with Series 120 B&W film...in rolls. And my form of texting is Morse Code via a straight key to a proper ham (Amateur Radio) wireless station.

That's some impressive box taping.
@mapesdhs597
3 ай бұрын
It takes a fair while to do, but it helps prevent transit damage, especially applying gaffer tape to every main edge. A common mistake people make when posting boxes is to only tape the main top seam, but this means side movement is possible along both side edges. Preventing lateral knocks from breaking the tape at either end is vital, hence I always seal both side seams aswell. The side tapes seal the upper tapes, so at the end there are only two exposed tape edges on the entire box, making it hard for someone to interfere with the contents with causing visible damage. To what extent using the Fragile tape results in better courier handling though, I don't know; I think it does, perhaps because the more professional appearance encourages more sensible driver behaviour for those who might otherwise be a tad on the wrong side of indifferent, ie. it makes the boxes look "important". No way to be sure. I wrote more about this and packaging methods in general back in 2013, just search for, "Posting Advice for eBid/eBay Sellers", though it needs updating in terms of included links, company phone numbers and service options mentioned, plus the World Transport Agency reference is no longer useful as they don't ship to private individuals anymore. However, the general info is still sound, eg. suggestions on how/where to obtain free packaging materials.
I am a fanatic for your work frankly. It’s my favourite history channel by far.
