So pumped to see someone, at a high level, ride one of these, so stoked for you and the upcoming season. I assume the next iteration will be electric shifting which I'm very much looking forward to. FULLY SEND IT!! Gearbox are imo the way we should all be going, gone are the days of smashing hundreds of pounds into rocks.

@@MrSupermugen I have never smashed my RD on anything bad enough to destroy it on a ride. I've just noticed over the years that the RD gets marks from hitting things. What I have done more than anything is bend my mech hanger, which will put all the gears off. Both combined makes me believe the RD is not as good, long term, as a gearbox.
Pinion gearboxes are definitely the way to go,low maintenance and less hassle! Nice looking bike !

Nice 1 Tommy C well looking forward 2 c how things go big up respect 👍👊💯
They make a lot of sense, weight of the system in the right place, if a bit heavier. No chain to snap and the belt will last a hell of a lot longer with no maintenance. Really glad to see a high end rider I follow using it now. Enjoy bud, looking forward to seeing how you get on but get that grip shift changed ASAP! Guessing they can't fit a standard SRAM or Shimano 9 or 12 speed shifter with their systems? If you can just do that as your first change for sure!

Totally for new innovation in the bike industry.
These are awesome. I have ridden one a few times. I wish that had distribution in the UK. The weight is all in the right place. So smooth and confident to ride.

You won’t be disappointed, pinion have been around for years, very reliable, handling is so good, tracking on the back wheel is so much better due to unsprung mass, and with the upcoming shifters, can’t see any faults with it
I'm sure you'll ride it majestically
So good to see zerode getting out there, electronic shifting is going to be a good thing to get more out there too. Just hope the frames are getting updated in the near future.

Super excited for you and for us, yer regulars. I won’t lie, my one concern with the gearbox for your style of riding is the grip-shift. But that’s just me guessing it might be an issue on the longer ‘bigger’ prolines. Just thinking of you Trip de Gnar and so forth. So, your opinion matters to us: now we’ll find out, thanks 🤩
Yes man! I met kiwi here on holiday with his Zerode back in summer, I wanted to lick that bike it looked so tasty!

I've been looking at a Zerode. Not sure whether it's the 12 or the 9 speed for me. Looking forward to the upcoming vids!!
Cool to see other brands from different countries coming through (never heard of them before). The level is high in NZ so no doubt its sick. A lot of engineering time went into that box too...

That colour is lush Tom. I’ve ridden internally geared hubs and the Kindernay also , used Gates belt drive on a Shimano alfine hub. like you said, it’s the shifters, and the mechanisms that get improved over time. Congrats on the new bike. Great to see a different technology making the big screen 🤟

To be fair, that looks sick.
Cracking bike. How many spacers have you got under the stem? Bike a bit on the small size?
When I looked at the thumbnail I somehow instantly knew it's gonna be pinion. And who has the best pinion mtb? Zerode.
Bike looks awesome. What make spring have you got on the shock?
Cant wait for more content on this gearbox.... it's the future!.. Personally I'd have to get rid of the grip shift...had a really old mtb with it on and it's junk imo...

gripshift..... bike looks sick tho!
very, very nice!! i would love a system like that on an eeb.. Coming to the Netherlands are ya? Going to do some riding too?
Gripshift nah but glad the derailleur has good looks mint
To quote Monty python...."And now for something completely different". Ridden a couple of Gripshift bikes (borrowed ones) in the the past. ....Hmmm 🤔. I always found that I kept changing gears as I was gripping the shifter part of the grip. That's something I'm sure you adapt to...plus I was using old style stuff. The pinion gearbox keeps threatening to break through. In so many ways it makes sense. It'll be interesting to see how you get on 👍
Nice move Tom! I agree the rear mech is so outdated and needs to be scrapped. How are you getting on with the gearbox, much drag on it? I saw these bikes a few years ago but haven't seen much of them in the UK since.
like it. Never too sure about the belt drive on a mountain bike, grit and other debris getting in there. where's the name come from ? sounds like something from Flash Gordon
Been eyeing these up for a while. A small nit pick on the mullet geo, the seattube angles are a bit on the slack side 64.5??
Beautiful bike, no doubt. How heavy is that bike?
6:13 Instinctiv bikes have trigger shifter for pinion.
Got a few of these running around in Oz as well. Be interesting to see how the gearbox holds up to the abuse you'll give it, and also if you find the system a bit 'draggy' on climbs. The riders I know who've got them have had gearbox failures, and you can't do much with them yourself, hopefully they are getting better each year as I think they are the future (sorry sram transmission!). Need some bigger brands to get on board and fast track development. RIP rear derailleur!

I think mainly the gripshift matey but thats soon changing
Looks great..the tech should be sound..but a grip shift..??.come on now..we all move around on a bike especially the contact points..surely a standard shifter system would be better? But looking forward to your opinion 😈😈💪💪
I don't have anything against belt drive, but I wish I could have this with a oval. My need can't handle round chainrings so well, I'm in agony if I ride with round chain rings so round drive ring will be agony too. Also the play in the engagement is a concern. I don't know if the system you tried has that issue. About 5 or 6 years ago I asked Gates Carbon Drive if they had any plans for an oval drive ring, they told me it's feasible, but they don't have any plans for it in the near feature.
I've been ranting on about gearboxes on MTB since the 90's ,be good to see what you think of it
Cool ive been running a pinnon c12 gearbox for 5years now don't want to go back ,i will say tho i would swap the gear cables around so the changing feels much better😁

So what’s the gearing the same as? 10/50 with what sort of similar chainring? Just interested to know how high and low ratio the gears are?
im looking at zerode once the electric gearchange becomes available
get one on order for me
Very interested my only hang up is the drag issue. With inn the gear box I can see it taking off with e-bikes because it Eliminates that problem with drag. IDK mybe super light titanium internal gears working would Solve. But the price would probably keep people away 🤔
@tommychype
6 ай бұрын
Yeah i heard the same dude but being totally honest the drag isn’t noticeable imo, if you think most drivetrains when new are definitely less drag but as a drivetrain degrades especially in winter when it gets full of shit it will most definitely drag more than a gearbox system. 🤟
Masaate 😮 smashing it dude, fairplay! Bike is sexy AF
Yesssss Tommy, stoked to see how you get on, the only thing that put me off was the 90's gripshift, other than that I tried one at a event and they are pukka riders, I hope they do go electric shift, I'd def b sold then 👍

Keep an eye out for January mate your dreams may just come true 😁😁😁
When racing and you want a gear change will having to come off the power lose you seconds?
When will Pinion get more efficient
Your be in Morzine on your bike holiday you crash the bars spin and pulls the gear cable and then its game over, back to your mech bike until you get a new cable from NZ, that is a true story.

Wow congratulations Tommy It’s so hard to make big decisions on a new bike even though I love the 84 it was an absolute weapon but it’s always good to try new things and I respect zeroed for what they are doing in MTB I have one problem don’t know how strong the belt is but if that gets snagged on a branch as your going down the trail that could be a long walk to the car And the grip shift I thought we got rid of them 50 years ago😂😂

Sorry to hear that buddy! Moving away from coal was hard for me too but this move made sense to move into 2024
I'm not convinced. First how much are they? Also, they will go wrong due to wear and tear, like a normal drive chain. When that happens normally riders have a box full of spares to fix it quickly, that's not going to be possible with a system like this. I can see the benefits, like the reduction of unsprung mass and centralising the weight, but a lot would depend on how the rider experience is, such as the speed of pick-up and efficiency. I want to like them but not sold on them. I'm not sure why some people are so down on regular transmission, the maintenance isn't that big a deal, ok, a mech is vulnerable, but at least you can see it and inspect the system instantly. I mean, do you have to strip this down every 100 hours to inspect the internals?
