My Natural Hair Journey | Autism / SPD & My Hair (with pics)

Hey guys ! ❤️
This is my natural hair journey! On November 22nd, I’ll have been 10 years natural! So I thought I’d let you know why I went natural and how that’s gone for me as a person on the spectrum!
I’ll be starting my loc journey and I’m so excited !!
Let me know how you’re doing in the comments, and share what some of your sensory issues are when it comes to your hair, even if you’re not natural or a person of color! I’d love to hear your point of view !! ♾🧠 ✨

Oh my gosh the oil stuff at school that you talked about sounds like a sensory nightmare..! I've definitely heard a lot of autistic women talk about their hair causing sensory issues too and now I'm understanding why I've never liked leaving it down freely out. It's always up in a bun or in braids except when I had locks for a few years, for some reason that was acceptable as long as it was off my face. Probably because it's not all wispy! And also get now why I liked having shaved head (no.2) so much in my late teens! So freeing. Love your hair Avena! It's super cute at the moment. Excited for you for your new lock journey! 💖💕

YES I hate the greasy feeling :P Yeah I think it’s really common! Yeah, I totally get you there. That is so awesome that you wore your hair short. Thank you so much Annie!!! ❤

@@Aneva Oh and also I struggle with that water running down my arms thing too! It's the biggest reason I put off regularly washing my face at the sink. But I've just seen these absorbent wrist band thingies that are specifically designed to prevent the water moving beyond them. What a difference that could make! I'm going to get some soon, I hope they work well! 🤗💖

We were just talkin' bout hair! Then I saw and noticed I hadn't seen this video. 😅 Natural hair care among Autistic women is a rarity to come across on KZread. There are a few on TikTok but none I've found helpful. I think my struggle comes when clipping my ends. Idk what I'm doing or if I'm doing it correctly. I also struggle with moisture. I don't drink a lot of water (sensory issues) so that probably contributes to how my hair grows. The one way I know my hair is growing is when I dye it and the dye ends up looking like highlights on my ends. Anyway thanks for sharing your hair journey. More of these videos would be great if you've got anymore tips to share.

I absolutely would love to do more natural hair tips for autistic women! I couldn't handle the moisture required to sustain its health. And that's nice that you recognize you have a sensory issue with drinking water.

I have 3c hair and i always had a battle with my mum over moisturising and oiling my hair. Anything beyond just my shampoo and conditioner felt so incredibly greasy and oily to me, i loved to run my fingers through my fro so i got very sensitive to how my hair felt. She was so determined for for me to have that wet fro look she tried to water spray my hair before i went out, my hair is so thick though itd be dripping down my face before she ever got close. I wanted to grow my hair out coming to uni so tried having it as curls for a while, very very similar to the 3c woman in the picture you put up, but i couldnt hack it. Having to let my hair airdry (sometimes with leavin condition/moisturiser on) so it wasnt dry and frizzy was a nightmare and just left me moody for 16 odd hours. Then having to make sure I washed it again on a regular schedule meant I just isolated a lot in my first year. I just gave up and got mine in locs to this day. I dont have a diagnosis with autism or anything but i felt it when you mentioned about water running down your arms after using a sink being a horrible experience. I can barely stand using a sink to wash my face cos of it, specially when sometimes the water drips down your neck ugh. On top of that when im washing dishes i get horribly itchy if dishwater gets anywhere but my hands. Since im late to the party im noticing other people ended up with locs too 🤣deffo not a trend here

GOSH not the "wet look"!! I am so uncomfortable just reading that lol, such bad memories. And goodness, yes wearing your hair in its loose state can be a lot of work. I definitely wanna welcome you to the community as you learn more about yourself :) always feel free to leave a comment ! So many of us are still looking into things, and it feels unmatched to have someone understand where you're coming from. But oh yeah, dish water 🤮. took me years to gather the courage to stick my hands in that for the drain. Now I just use disposable plasticware to clean it if possible lol. And for SURE, it seems like we all had the same idea with our hair !!

omgggg, this vid is insanely relatable and you speak the truth. lol the barbie doll comparison was great. lol we've had very similar experiences in regards to our hair, especially in adolescence. im also a mix of 4a/b/c myself. im very tender-headed. getting my hair done was always a horrible experience. lol perms, curlers, combs...that damn plastic-smelling grease. I HATED heat products. i always kept my hair in braids or twists, absolutely could not handle nor wanted my natural hair loose or manipulated/treated in any way. etc. i hated the word "nappy" and heard it often. in my early 20s - was so tired of caring for my hair and the pressure + social norms of looking presentable etc, my sister in law recommended a wig for me. she took me to the hair store, was fitted for a wig in front of some of the staff and it was so humiliating. lol the wig was bulky and terrible feeling + looking because i have a big moon head/face and my hair is thick as a tree stump lol. after that harrowing experience 🤣🤣, i decided to lock my hair WHICH IS FREEEEEDOM...!!! its like having hair only part time - so low maintenance, so effortlessly beautiful & versatile etc. youre going to LOVE IT! fun fact, i cant wash my hair in the shower, it feels like im in the shower with a blanket - my hair is thick and heavy etc the sink, although uncomfortable, its the most convenient option and a bit more soothing scalp-wise. i can be more precise and accurate in the sink for a thorough deep clean. another fun fact, did you know GI issues is a common comorbidity of those with ASD? i have intermittent right lower quadrant idiopathic stomach pain. this is my favorite vid of yours - your captions under your photos were cracking me up. lmao

I literally can only ✨imagine✨ how long your hair is! Yes our experiences are a lot alike. I definitely can see not wanting my hair wet in the shower once it gets longer. I hate dripping hair. And me and wigs don’t mix. I never knew what it was, but maybe it does have a lot to do with autism. I felt unlike myself every time I wore one, even if it looked fine to other people. Not for me lol. You make locs sound so exciting and I seriously look the journey!! I did find out they were linked !! It’s insane ! You should definitely look into that stomach pain. I had chronic pains until I was diagnosed. You could have something like IBS. It would be worth looking into if possible ❤️ and thanks so much, I love roasting myself lol

@@Aneva yeah, wigs feel like a helmet and they are too foreign for me to accept as well! my hair is touching my butt now, ive been locked for about 7-8 years. i have about 120-140 locs as of now. if i had known what was in store for me when it came to retwisting, i would have made my locs larger so i can have less overall, maybe just 100. i retwist every 2-3 months just because im not great at hair styling nor do i have the patience but fortunately, my regimen is healthy for my scalp and hairline. lol im sure you will get much quicker than me when the time comes, i sense you are very adept at hair styling. lol and yeah, funny thing about the stomach pain. idiopathic = unknown cause. i had blood tests, ct scan, radiograph and an mri, my igA was elevated twice the normal amount. it was quite scary but the mri, CT and radiographs revealed nothing, as of now, i am fine. i do believe the cause will unearth itself in my later years tho, hopefully i can handle it. lol

First off... your hair is amazing! I was only diagnosed this year with Autism. This would explain why I get annoyed if my hair is in my face being a pest lol I've been growing my hair out for about a year and a half, so now it goes into a man bun xD
