Many v12 testers want the car to drive like they would. The "drive like a human would" is the description many use. It should be noted that humans aren't the best yardstick for safe driving.

Truth. It would be safer to take turns a little wider (to avoid clipping curbs to the right and the risk of hitting opposing traffic to the left), signal a little sooner (for obvious reason), stay a little closer to the outside edge of the lane (because curbs/walls/guardrails don't move unpredictably, other traffic does), than your average human driver does. ... and stop veering in the opposite direction just before turning. Almost every human habitually swerves to the right just before turning left and to the left just before turning right, presumably to compensate for cutting the corner as tight as possible, instead of just starting the turn a little later or with a slightly less tight turning radius. Large vehicles may actually need to do this as an actual wide turn maneuver to complete the turn safely or at all, but drivers of even the smallest cars do this all the time unnecessarily, which when done in narrow city streets can cause accidents. Minor ones, to be sure, but still, now you're standing in a blocked intersection screaming at the other driver while backed up traffic honks at you, not a good time. I don't have FSD so I'm not sure, but I think it *doesn't* do this veering like humans do, although it does still cut corners unnecessarily close.

Wishing that the big KZread influencers like you would band together and lead a campaign to get owers to band together to get Tesla to allow transfer of FSD (other than just when they try to push demand at the end of a quarter). -It would motivate owners to stay in the ecosystem. -It would increase uptake of FSD as it would decrease the risk. -It would support the value of FSD in used Teslas. -It would help fulfill the promises made years ago that it would be ready 'soon'.

Seems like if you buy a used car that had FSD, the FSD doesn’t add to the price of the car. Which sucks for the previous owner but is great for the next buyer because they can get FSD basically for free.

  • @cyborgLIS

    @cyborgLIS

Honestly I think the reason FSD is so expensive and difficult to transfer is to limit the number of cars with FSD currently on the road, since the product is still in Beta and its safety is unproven. If there was a high rate of FSD related accidents the publicity would be terrible, not to mention the potential lawsuits.

So far with my testing too, it's been pretty amazing especially with variable road conditions like construction, etc. Some things to start looking forward to: Ability to read garage/parking signs and lead you out to the exit Pothole avoidance Slightly faster speeds where v12 is now very slow Since FSD is now a neutral network, the limits are endless and can be so so quickly deployed.

This is the most excited I've been for FSD since I first got it about 2 years ago! v12 has been significantly better for me too in Illinois suburbs. Still have occasional interventions, and 1 case in a few hours of driving of picking a wrong lane, but its much better than v11 in several areas: 1. IMO the biggest improvement to it "feeling" safer is the fact that it fully commits once it starts turning where cars might be coming. It always felt very sketchy when it would pull out slowly, feeling like if a car IS coming and not paying attention, we're gonna get rear-ended. But now when it pulls out it gets up to speed so much better 2. Same as 1 but with turning left in a gap between oncoming traffic, it was okay before but its confidence "feels" much better now in a way that's hard to explain. 3. It stays to the right MUCH better on streets that aren't marked, which makes oncoming cars much more comfortable. 4. Speed selection on country back roads feels a lot safer. 5. Smaller roundabouts are much better, it used to do some weird signaling that would be confusing for other drivers (though now it hugs the right a little too much on bigger roundabouts which will make drivers think I'm exiting before I am).

In clear weather, FSD is working better and better. But I don't know how Tesla can solve fundamental reduction in visibility with rain and fog without LIDAR/Enhanced radar.

Just an FYI beta uses gait tracking of the people to determine their possible path intersection with not only your vehicle but target tracked vehicles at intersections. This is what caused the inaccurate tracking of people sometimes as beta evaluates someone as "intersecting" when they might just be walking briskly toward the edge of the sidewalk to wait for traffic to clear. The gait tracking is also used too determine pedestrian travel direction that's why it's accuracy falls when pedestrians becomes obscured by obstacles.

The way v12 handles parking lots has me excited. I ALWAYS engage V11 in my work parking lot, and for the past year and a half its failed every single day. I park in the back, and it needs to use a small connecting road between the two main roads, the small road has no stop sign, and is blocked by buildings on both sides. Every single day, V11 will just ignore the fact it that it cant see left or right because it has no stop sign, and just recklessly pull out. Again, I blame it on not having a stop sign there, but a human doesn't need one there to realize you should stop and slowly creep to see as cars on the main road dont have a stop sign either but they do have the right of way. V12 seems to realize this from the videos iv seen.

Aside from that digression, I wanted to see how you accelerated and how much time spent at stop signs. I am waiting to get V12 on my new M3+ that's on a 2024 branch and then I realized that my wife's Y had gotten an update recently, while she is travelling. Sure enough, she got 12.3.0. So I took her car for a quick errand and fired up FSD. It drove smoothly out of the neighborhood, though waiting a tad long at the last 4-way stop that has been a horrendous problem in my old M3. It drove well down the next straight stretch of road, but was going 6 mph under the speed limit for some reason (no cars around). I nudged the accelerator and it maintained speed down to the next major intersection. It correctly moved into the right turn lane and actually gradually slowed as it approached the turn rather than waiting to slam the brakes on at the last moment. BUT, just as my old M3 on V11 would do, it stopped dead halfway through the turn rather than continuing into the acceleration lane and working out a merge with the through traffic. The people behind me were not happy so I had to push the accelerator and take over. I will need to get it on my car to test it more fully but there does appear to be significant improvement over V11 in my old car.

There are so many moments where a driver has to 'negotiate' with a pedestrian, or another driver. v12 does seem to be better at this. Human to human eye contact, hand motions, body language, along with situational, environmental, considerations are important factors. Human drivers often struggle with these factors too. It will be interesting to see how human behavior adapts as more and more 'robot cars' are encountered.

The car did display the 15 MPH speed limit (first time ever for that) BUT it did not slow down. I don't know how they can roll this out in the wild with this kind of behavior. The most amazing thing I've noticed personally is that the AI makes its own decisions now. This solves all of my mapping issues because now the map doesn't determine the route the actual AI is determining the route. Sounds scary but it actually makes the better choices rather than taking unusual and confusing routes

  • @Franklinsone

The problem is AI has no prior knowledge of the road. It took me to the left most lane thinking it will continue to go straight, but it curves left. Only the right most lane goes straight. Then the car will try to change back, but since there is traffic, it is stuck in the wrong lane. There are many examples like this where the car would turn a corner but goes into a turning lane or bike lane and it gets stuck as everyone behind me is leapfroging me.

@@U2B_Viewer Yes, hopefully AI remembers the road too. This is very easy to repro on 82 South, left turn on 42nd Ave, then right turn on pacific Blvd in San Meteo. Since by law you need to turn into the closest lane so FSD does that but everyone turns wide into the right turning lane. Now FSD is stuck in the wrong lane and tries to merge back like a Di*k driver. There are many other places too so it's not just 1 location. Only giving that as an example so maybe dirtyTesla can go test it.

Here is another example. 33.8743668, -117.7483360 facing south on Yorba Linda Blvd. Lots of cars will cross double yellow to wait for the left turn to Costco. Since crossing double yellow is illegal, FSD is now stuck, and can't get into the left lane.

I think this is the biggest impediment now to using it locally in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I know these winding roads better than the AI/Map and when it wants to take me a way I don't want it to go because I know local conditions, I have to disengage it and after so many disengagements its locks me out for the drive. I would really like it to drive and follow my turn signal prompts. Or learn my local route preferences?

Do you happen to know if they are only rolling v12 out to newer lined cars first? We have a 2018 model x and 2018 model 3 , both with FSD and only the model 3 has had the v12 rolled out to it. Which is different than past rollouts, generally our model x gets it first and then the model 3.

That and the fact that as long as it costs this much and I can't sit in the passenger seat and work while it's driving means that this is not worth it. If it doesn't get me more time back, it's still just a party trick.

4:28 Looking at that pedestrian shows the difference between driving culture in America and Europe. I would have just walked to the cycling lane immediately expecting cars to stop for me and I never have to wait for cars on a crosswalk without lights. 12:00 And your STOP signs are weird. Here you wouldn't need to yield for that car because it was coming from your left and you both had STOP signs. 19:59 This is also different. If there is only one turning lane and no oncoming turning traffic you are supposed to turn straight into the lane you want to continue on.

No phantom braking incident? Was any of this in sunny weather, or was all of it overcast/semi-overcast? Edit: mid-video, there WAS phantom braking, of sorts -- when the car believed there was a pedestrian in front of it, but there wasn't. That's technically phantom braking. Very weird. The AI just needs some more work. Today I got a surprise, 30-day FSD trial rolled out to my car, but I'm still nervous about trying it. Maybe I will for a short errand on a familiar route.

The ghost echo person at 9:30 kind of throws into question whether this is actually end to end trained. I seem to recall long ago them talking about making the driving policy neural while keeping all the other elements of FSD and then full end to end all in one neural net. But if we think back to v11 which was supposedly neural driving policy, was it really? or was it the robotic collection of human code driving. We are certainly seeing a drastically different driving style with v12 that suggests machine learned so is this actually fully end to end or is this just partial? because if this was black box neural net it would not be easy to accurately extract that it was hallucinating a person still in front of it that prevented it from going. Yet the visualization seems to be exactly correlating with its behavior.

I don't like how it treats nearly all stop signs the same. Stopping too far back, and then creeping forward works if only you have the stop sign, but at 4 and 3 way stops, people just follow the rules. and go when it's their turn without creeping. It confuses other drivers. It's too cautious, it needs to just go when it's turn comes, and if there's a minor fender bender, it's going to be the other drivers fault. Maybe this is where the AI needs a little more coded advice rather than test videos. Does it know when the other directions also have stop signs?
