Shawn, I had to pause the video the minute you used the word “stigma.” No matter what you do, people will complain...even when THEY don’t know any better. You are living 100x more sustainably than most everyone else throughout Canada and the US...and you do it with conscience....so don’t apologize. Your videos are heartwarming, inspiring and wholesome. Thank you for opening up your world to us. Please stay well, and keep the videos coming.

As a forester (30+ years), thinning the trees is proper, in the absence of natural thinning (by fire and disease). If done right, the surrounding trees will grow better and capture more carbon. It is good to leave a few larger dead trees (snags) in places to attract certain wildlife species. Also random thickets or pockets of trees add value as cover for ungulate species.

Absolutely you are so correct. I lost my home in the Camp Fire that took the town of Paradise Ca. I was in charge of issuing permits for my HOA to remove trees. I was told a Healthy Forest was 10 trees per 1/4 acre. The HOA didn’t want trees removed unless deceased. Insurance companies wanted trees away from the homes. I would give the permits if it was reasonable and not clear cutting for solar etc. People got down on me for that. I removed 6 trees on my 1/4 acre and limbed up 30 ft two days before the fire. Unfortunately because of years of neglect that Fire was too hot with wind driven embers. Even after the fire some people are up in arms over tree thinning. Light needs to get to the forest floor. We need to go back to select cutting and thin our forests.

Kit Otterstrom Sorry you lost your home. The challenges facing California when it comes to wildland fire are very complex. The media, and certain groups with an agenda seem to want to push “climate change” as the main driver of the fires. The list of issues that all add up to a nasty state of wildland forest is long and varied. Everything from counties allowing more and more unchecked building into the wildlands, to construction using overly flammable materials, to decades of fire exclusion from existing forests. I have spent most of my career in the Sierra Nevada mountains (currently live in the central valley), and the forests need proper management if we are ever to return them to a healthy pre-european condition. I am not sure the media and NGO’s are going to allow management without litigation. I guess they don’t believe in science.

Shawn I agree 100%. Being a forester by trade I feel I'm constantly having to defend sound silviculture practices to those that stigmatize forestry (sometimes rightfully so) without understanding it. Simply put, a sustainably managed forest will not only grow more trees but better quality trees, while providing value to both humans and wildlife. Especially from thoughtful and conscious stewards of the land like yourself. Didn't mean to turn this into a forestry pamphlet! Keep up the great work and can't to see the forest garden!

I agree too. All my cutting on my regrowing forest is done with consideration of helping the healthiest trees get healthier and speeding the succession, not just my convenience. On the 'clear cutting' he's doing. Widespread clearcutting is bad in general. But, what he's doing is basically creating a small meadow. The border of forest to meadow is a very energetic place, as he noted for many valuable plants, but also for animals, especially birds. Then he's going to be managing that meadow for high productivity. Done right its a great asset to the area, ecologically.

Having spent 24 years at the forest edge trying to keep deer out of plantings, I can assure you: - double low fence doesn't work. The deer learn to jump one and then the next. - 6' fence doesn't work. Deer jump it from a standing position, no running start needed. - 7' fence doesn't work. Most deer can jump it. Occasionally they miss and get injured by getting hung up on the fence. An injured deer is a dead deer due to predation. - Electric fence didn't work for me. Deer learned to jump between the wires with remarkable agility; even if they got a jolt they would do it. - Any time one deer learns to foil a system, all the others quickly learn from the first deer. - No one who tried hedgerows ever reported success to me. Only thing that worked here is a 7' high fence with a top and bottom wire plus an additional top wire at 8' 3," so effectively about an 8'+ fence. Posts are spaced 5' apart. While the deer jumped the 7' fence alone, the additional top wire a bit above 8' stopped them from ever attempting to jump it. Flower bulbs that I planted 15 years ago are blooming for the first time ever, behind this fence. Trees browsed down to the ground each year will have a chance to shoot up this spring. Not a single deer intrusion with this up for 6 months. Everything immediately outside the fence has evidence of deer browse, and they've made a trail right along the fence nibbling whatever they can reach through the fence mesh, but that's the limit of what they do. Save yourself the trouble and build a sturdy 8'+ high fence the first time. You have nothing to lose by building it what you think is too high. Build it too low and you will not achieve an effective, safe barrier.

In the Arkansas Ozarks we struggled with deer, a 12' fence works! However I have the solution. We bought 8'x10' green screen, made to be used to create a shade. Then we put t post in the ground with PVC pipe slipped over them. Then used connectors and made a skeletal wall and connected the panels together with metal wire. (They have grommets like a tarp). The fence is 7' high, but nothing but birds make it inside the garden! I believe that the screen confuses the deer, they don't even go near it. So far none have gotten in, and this is the 3rd year. We left a foot of it on the ground so rabbits can't get in either. I don't know what it is called or where to buy it, we got it from a local store that buys bulk trucks :/ it is made of some sort of fishing line, and they have it in green and black.

A beautiful dose of Cali is just what the world needs!! I knew deer could jump very high but I didn't know they are leery of wide fences. That explains why where I grew up there were lots of rock fences that were not very high but a couple of feet wide and the wood rail fences were in a zig zag pattern. Thanks for that knowledge, Shawn.

Great message. As a long time homesteader (40 years) next to the National Forest , make sure to get some fencing up for the gardens and trees. We have a problem here with gophers as well. Fencing under the raised beds for gopher problem, fencing to keep deer out, netting to keep birds from eating our fruit, and fencing to keep our chickens safe from predators. *everyone likes chicken! The fencing for the chickens goes under the coop and chicken run so that creatures can't dig under and get them. We have increased our flock of chickens to 30 and have added more vegetable beds to prepare for the chaos.

Misery loves company, Sean, so the miserable folks out there want you to be miserable as well. If they can't find something legitimate to complain about they make it up as they go. Don't be influenced by such negative Nellies. What you have accomplished is inspiring and you weren't being selfish about it. You're in a better position than a lot of others--due to what's going on world-wide at the moment. I suspect a lot of people are just jealous of you. You may not be perfect, but you're doing your level best to set a good example. That's something to be well satisfied with. Just continue being who you are, friend. You are stil much loved.

Hi Shawn, It is funny to see the difference between you and your daughter, you working in a tee shirt and her in the background with full winter rig including woolly hat and boots. I know we need trees to help with the environment but you have a very small carbon footprint and give much more back to the forest than you take. It is great to see Carlie enjoying herself so much just running around and playing in the snow. She is such a pleasant dog and is so laid back I am amazed she has not fallen backwards! She reminds me of a dog I had a long time ago, although he had a good life and a long life (16 years) it is still a very intense memory that it brings tears to my eyes, it is so hard to have to say goodbye to them.

This is how wealth is created. Not via financialization where nothing real is created which has value to our fellow men. It's back-breaking hard labor making of them in the world around us some things of value for ourselves. Taking trees and judiciously harvesting them and making of them, say, a new workshop from which even more wealth can be created. This is self-reliance and it is capitalism in its most basic and honest form.

If only by the fact that we don't have any kind of way to really defeat it, outside flattening the curve and playing the long game, yes. Fear is a powerful drive. It will certainly rewrite, where politicians allow it, how the medical system works. It has, for sure, cemented the fact that communist China is an enemy of the modern world, and our existence as Humans. They have no regards for common sense, neither those in the people who partake in the acts that spawned this disease (and others) nor the government, who has pretty much released the plague to the rest of us, by trying to cover up their mistakes. TO think that all this mess started because of superstition and the stupid belief that eating bats will make you younger. China's emperor, died of poisoning with Mercury, you'd think they'd learn their lesson by now, no such chance.
