    Many models of cars in the first year of production have issues like panel gaps. This isn't just a Tesla thing. As of now, panel gaps on the Model Y are not an issue. When you're an early adopter, be prepared for various issues. As someone that drives an EV from 2017 (BMW i3) I'm aware of this. Personally, I think I made the right choice and in another 5 years when I'm at ~150,000 miles, I may look another EV.

    When you said "If you don't like Tesla, don't drive this car..." I literally laughed out loud because that's exactly what happened to me!! I went from "Tesla is a toy car and not worth the inflated prices, to I'm buying a Model Y next year even if I have to go broke doing it" in a NY minute!!! The Model Y, I feel, is a car designed for people who like to drive and I am a driver by nature. Honestly, the "one-pedal" feature Tesla has sold me on it within the first 5 miles of my commute home. That's worth its weight in gold!!!! It'll cost me at least 55k and it'll be worth every single penny.

I will say that having the Level 2 charger at the crib is a game changer, I couldn’t stomach not having a charger at home to plug in every night. Great review. Appreciated honest comments. One way to overcome the problem of menu searching for a feature (e.g., why does the glove box NOT have a manual switch) is to use the audio command feature: “Open glove box” or “engage front window defroster” instead of searching thru two submenus for the particular feature while driving down a busy street. Winter frost problem was good mention.

One item not addressed, I did not see you address is the cost to insure this vehicle. I would say bumper to bumper coverage? Just to add: for such an expensive vehicle, I believe a tesla should have, few added features; Ambient lighting, power sliding sunshade for roof, side mirror turn signals, as standard for such an expensive tech car, not to mention better audio quality. Needs improvement.

    I’ve had my model y for a year and a half and absolutely love it. The big thing I try to remind people is that it’s not a luxury car. It’s an expensive techy electric car. I find that too many people think they were buying this to compete with their older BMW or Lexus and there really is no competition in terms of trim and true luxury. But to be able to wake up in the morning and have a fully charged car that drives me to work, is unbelievable.

    My issues with my four year ownership of a Model 3 Extended Range: 1) The range was WAY overstated! Cross country driving was horrible! 2) Still not enough charging stations. 3) Not enough repair centers - not much went wrong with the car, but it was an hour drive each way to the service center! 4) Good luck ever getting a service rep or anyone from Tesla on the phone. 4) I never liked the limited number of color choices. 5) It was far too easy to damage your rims on curbs! 6) Full Self Driving was over promised! 5) The delivery experience was horrendous! OK - that's me being nitpicky, since their were quite a few things that I loved and miss about the car! 1) It was well built! 2) I loved the acceleration! 3) Most of the tech features were amazing! 4) Safety - I got rear ended and got little damage! 5) It was extremely comfortable with quite a bit of leg room for rear passengers! 6) Great for local/city driving! 7) Economical when using a home charger! 8) Not having to stop at filthy and often dangerous gas stations! Would I ever buy another one? Maybe? And, it would definitely be a Tesla! But for local driving only! Environmental questions? 1) Lithium mining 2) Battery disposal 3) Over taxing the electrical power grid!

    One thing about an expanding charging network and other EV's. The Tesla charging network is reliable however, the other charging networks, not so much. That's the real difference. They can have as many DC chargers as they want, but if they aren't reliable, what's the point? I've never had an issue with a Tesla charger yet. Great video btw pointing out all the specifics on your Model Y, I just picked up a 2022 Model Y Performance, it's amazing. I swapped out my Model 3 LR for it.. quite a difference.

    So what is the true cost of ownership?

  • @madmotorcyclist
    @madmotorcyclist5 ай бұрын

    I bought a Nissan Leaf back in 2011 (now going on 12 years) because I only wanted a car for short trips (long trips I ride my Harley). This car was great for me. Total maintenance cost over 12 years is around $1600 (three accessory batteries, 4 key fob batteries, flat tire, and recently one motor coolant pump). When I bought the car it cost around $36.5k but thanks to all the subsidies out the door cost me $25k and I got a free level 2 charger in my home for being one of the first to jump on production EVs. At present I get around 65 miles of range out of the original 105 miles (which is plenty for my use) and the battery (still original) still indicates that it fully charges (no bad cells). I have babied the battery by never leaving it fully charged for long periods of time and I usually keep it charged around 50% if not being used for a week or two and the car was garaged. If they make it to production my next EV will be an Aptera (what an EV really should be that puts Tesla to shame efficiency-wise).

  • @madmotorcyclist

    @madmotorcyclist

    5 ай бұрын

    One additional comment is that at present our power grid can't support EVs if they gain a majority of the market and recently automakers are now starting to drop EV support due to them not selling well. In fact even at Tesla's fast charging stations you cannot fast charge more than three EVs concurrently because of the limitations of what it can pull from the power grid. Aptera is the only EV that doesn't require a huge battery for long range and gives you free miles with solar charging because it is so efficient (between 2-3x more efficient than Teslas).

    I think the description of the heat pump was incorrect. The heat pump isn't about heating the car when it's plugged in (although doing so will increase range), it's about heating the car more efficiently by reclaiming byproduct heat generated by various other car systems, e.g., motor, electronics, outside air. The previous heaters would just run electricity though a resistive heater, which is way more energy-intensive. This is similar to using a heat pump for your home vs electric heaters.

    The headlights of those cars are focused too high, blinding the car in front or ahead of it. There should be a recall for those. Strange thing is, some of them are ok, but most are focused high.

    A range of 280 miles is a deal breaker, particularly with solid state batteries seemingly closer than ever. Solid state batteries are projected to offer ranges in excess of 500 miles, reduced risk of fire, and recharge times of 10 - 15 minutes. When, and if, solid state becomes available current EVs will have little value. A range of 280 miles or less depending on conditions is, essentially, an expensive grocery getter. Not really useful for road trips. Toyota is planning (FWIW) to have solid state batteries in vehicles by 2027.

I saw a video by a Toyota mechanic and I went to both cars and did what he was doing to Tesla, twisting the door handle pull inside and saying look at this built quality is junk. So today I tried both and Toyota is much much weaker than Tesla. Its just some bullshit that these KZread Elon Musks come up with.

    Thanks for your video and review of the Model Y. I just purchased the 2023 Model Y long range. I also did a test drive that same day. Sould be getting the vehicle in a few weeks. I like all the features that come with the car. I got all standard features on the vehicle. Dark Silver metallic is the current standard instead of white. I got the 19 inch Gemini wheels/tires. Last I got the black seats, In all my other previous vehicles they were also black. The seat colors are what I am used to. Last, I just stayed with basic Auto Pilot - don't really need the other auto driving modes. I have a 220 volt line to also do my charging and that will be my main source of charging since I will just do around town and short single charge trips. I know while driving I will be using the "voice command control" for some functions so I don't have to be looking at the Center Screen. It will be a learning experience. You said your tried Super Cruise. Can Super Cruise do any marked roads or go through town like Tesla Auto Pilot can??? I heard Super Cruise will only do certain selective highways like Freeways, etc. As long as the roads are marked properly, Tesla Basic Auto Pilot will enable. I don't need the lane changing feature which now costs an added 6,000 dollars. FSD now costs 15,000 dollars. So my Electric car journey will begin soon. Take care.

    I’ve been an auto tech for 22 years. Electric cars are a fascination for me, and I’m not at all opposed to them. A good customer of mine bought a Model Y, and I am impressed by many aspects of the car. One disappointment: he has had to have the hvac compressor and octovalve replaced *three times* in 15,000 miles. Under warranty, yes, but the first time around took just shy of a month, though they gave him a loaner. Second time took two weeks, only got a loaner for 4 days. Third time, 12 days, no loaner. Apparently the service center he is directed to (in a very large metro area) has been getting busier and busier with similar repairs. Considering that we live in a “cold winter” region, hvac is damn important…and as he found out, since that system is also responsible for the temp regulation of the battery & drive components, every time it failed, it wouldn’t allow him to drive more than a mile or so (the third time it wouldn’t allow him to drive at all). Being that it’s such a critical system, a failure every 5k miles average is very concerning. The last time around, the service center guys told him that it was a $7700 repair if paying cash. So he is intending to sell it before the warranty expires and plans to look into a Rivian, I think is what he said.

    I had one on order and they told me 2mths initially but I kept getting email delays and I needed a car. I ended up buying an Audi E-tron and it is WONDERFUL. I am actually glad that it took too long. The E-tron is far more superior to the Tesla because it's just a regular LUXURY car that you plug up but it totally lacks in tech. That's what I was looking forward to with the Tesla BUT I found out that the Tesla has too many cameras EVEN in the cabin that they "CLAIM" they don't access unless we give them permission (yeah right). I am really big on autonomy for ME. The other thing that Tesla has on Audi is the take off. I can get 0 to 60 in 5.7 secs. But the E-tron is a very heavy car though. I just wish Tesla and Audi have a baby. Audi has the build and look inside of a luxury car but lacks in tech. I think I made the right decision because I do NOT trust Elon. He looks like a mad scientist who wants to rule the world. I don't trust that one day he wont do something to our cars nefariously or listen to us. I saw a red Model Y with the black accents at Costco yesterday and that thing was GORGEOUS. UMMMMMM and the price has come down also. UMMMMMMMMMM

    Yeah Tesla is still ok now. But they had better address the quality and service issues as the competition is building from companies that offer better build quality, service and nicer interiors. Tesla is still enticing because of their charging infrastructure and tax incentives. But since they are opening up their charging to other brands, people are looking at other possible options. And if the tax incentives run out on Tesla or other manufacturers offer comparable incentives then Tesla will face more competition. Probably one of the reasons they lowered their prices.

We took possession of ours, and did a due bill over chips in the paint on the front end even before we left the lot. The following day, Tesla called and said they would not replace the panels. We had to have the whole front end repainted. Worst experience yet with a manufacture. This is the first non-BMW we've owned. To be fair, I guess you get what you pay for and we won't be buying another one. Like you, i'll look at other manufactures. Great video!
